This is easily one of my favourite moments on the show. 1. The trust Pam has that Dwight will stop the device - Though they seem to irritated by each other mostly, she trusts her instincts on Dwight. That's how well they know each other. 2. In the episode where Dwight, Michael and Jan go to Wallace's party, Dwight meets Wallace's son and talks of how he would love to have an arm chair like the one in the room - in this episode he's seen on one. 3. Dwight never shows his true feelings (also if he does, his feelings recover at twice the rate, haha another reference) but his co workers are his family along with Mose and others. He doesn't want people to see he cares, but he probably cares the most. This is just a beautiful episode which shows the great depth in characters.

Anyone notice how this mirrors the time when Michael scott and Jan went to Chili's to meet with an important client on a particular sale? Here (1:44) at the dinner table Pam instead of telling Dwight to stop the doomsday device just tries to keep a a friendly conversation and when Andy tries to tell Dwight about the device Pam cuts him off, same as when Michael was talking to the client at Chili's and when Jan tried to interject Michael cut her off.

I'm sure everyone's life would be as exciting as they portray a normal office in the show if we stopped rushing everywhere and appreciated little things more.

I think I understand why Dwight didn't want to turn off the device. It was because he felt unappreciated by his coworkers, granted yes he does go way too far sometimes and went overboard this time but he does work hard and try to think of new ways to help the company and his co-workers don't thank him and appreciate what he did they just yell at him and harass him and not even say thank you for trying to help them. I bet in this moment he got fed up with them just yelling at him and not giving them a sign of appreciation he felt like he was done trying with these guys. so yeah Dwight can be a jerk but it wouldn't kill them just to stop harassing him and just give him a little more appreciation.
