allowing myself to fully experience a panic attack was the only thing that ever helped. This included accepting my death as that always seemed to be the ultimate fear involved with a panic attack. The sooner i just said to myself "Ok im dying now and we all have to go sometime so if it's my time there is nothing i can do but let it happen" was the sooner i started to feel better. You can't hide from it...Maybe that's just my experience but i thought i would share it.

Wow! I am going to try this! I doubt I will succeed as the point I am convinced I am going to die is usually the point in which telling myself I was going to die but have managed to pull my self around for a few seconds

does anyone else suffer from serve nausea due to anxiety ? every time i have a panic attack its the same feeling of wanting to throw up and its so bad when im at work, makes me more anxious knowing i have to be at work for 8-9hrs and feel this dread because i feel trapped and if i needed to vomit i wouldn't be able too.

I also get that sort of feeling that was so severe a few months ago that I wouldn't leave the house. Eventually, once I accepted the fact that it was just my anxiety instead of a GI problem, it settled down. Nausea like this is really common with panic attacks and the misunderstanding leads to more panic-induced nausea. Good luck!

I used to have panic attack in my work in front of customers. They were quite debilitating. Sometimes I would leave the room pretending I need to go to the restroom. Then I joined this group for social anxiety and they taught me more or less what you are saying. So I started having panic attacks right there in front of the customers and just let them see-[mostly hand shivering when counting money etc.] The attack would usually dissipate with 5 min or so. This happened a number of times. Now i rarely have them at all, since I am not afraid of them anymore.

Yes! I get them at work too but I do massage therapy!!! So, the "calm, peaceful massage therapist" is having a full blown panic attack while trying to help someone else relax. lol awesome! :/ It's terrible because I can't excuse myself and ride it out in the bathroom... I too get the hand shaking, sweating, room shrinking type feelings (etc) but have to carry on massaging and cannot escape.... which then makes it waaaay worse! This has led me to go on a "take as needed" med that I take at work and it's helped 100%! I just don't want to be on this med forever as it has been deemed "bad" and most doctors want to take their patients off of it. I find I could apply the techniques in this video outside of work but while working the symptoms of my attacks are far too noticeable and disrupt my clients experience (which they paid for, etc). Any tips?

I've suffered from panic attacks for over 20 years now. My triggers are driving, being in large crowds, in situations I know I can't leave or get out of. My heart beats fast, I feel nervous, major heat, I swallow air, shake, I feel like I'm going to fall, like it’s my last breath, dizzy. I've been through all the medical tests you can imagine. I've been taking Effexor XR for a few years now and it does help some. Thank you for this video Noah, I will certainly try and watch your other videos.

I live with anxiety and its an affliction for sure, my latest neurosis is when I walk up a flight of stairs I get scared from my own breath going more rapid and it causes this panic, its so scarey. what I need in that moment is lots of love and assurance that everything is ok. not everyone will give it, some judge panic like there is something seriously wrong with you. it makes it even worst to cope with it. your so comforting Noah, you look like such a compassionate soul!

As someone who has had this experience for years now, I feel relieved that it can easily be cured just by allowing it to happen. This is the very situation that worsens my stammering and speech blocks every time I try to prevent it. I just pray that I succeed in being open about it, and to not try to hide it,and end up worsening the situation in the process. I have never taken any anti-depressants or anything of that source, and I do not think I will. If it started by itself, then it can heal by itself. As long as I become open about it.

It depends, really. It's okay to let thoughts pass through sometimes. and try to find some acceptance of things are. However, if your panic attack persists for hours and days,to the point where you're breaking down, feel drained, or thinking of doing something bad, then I feel like it's a good idea to take a break, at least for one day. Just try to focus on other things, even if it's for one day. Once you regain strength, then maybe let some more thoughts come in and try his approach. Of course, therapists can help you choose the best techniques.

Thank you for being here Noah. I always marvel at people that can help others handle these situations in life. It is so hard being human sometimes! I have just recently developed an anxiety issue and I am dumbfounded by it. I am turning 49 soon and while I have had several challenges in life, I have never experienced anything quite like this. It started a year ago with a massive lifestyle change. I thought I had the inner resources to deal with the changes but I am just falling apart. Many of the issue are around family, as though I am afraid to feel too much love. This is so new to me. I really appreciate all of you that have come here and shared a bit about your experience. This anxiety and fear makes me feel so cut off and unhealthy that my little mind just spirals out of control. Noah's information and manners are soothing and reading some comments help me feel a bit more stable. I have so much compassion in my heart for all of you that are going through this. Don't try to go through this alone. I think that is my biggest defect of character, that I try to be so independent that I just shut everyone out when I am not feeling so well mentally. Now I don't know where to turn - although I have found a counsellor. One step at a time I guess. Thank you people. I appreciate your sharing.

I had a severe panic attack while driving on the interstate when a nephew died of an overdose. I was in shock at that time. Since then I haven’t been able to drive on the interstate despite the fact I used to drive across the US multiple times by myself. I’d do anything to get my freedom back. Can you do a video on driving anxiety? Now I just drive the longer ways avoiding the interstate.

This has really helped, for the past month I've felt nauseous and because I don't like to throw up, it creates more of a panic for me. I went to an urgent care, they tested me for everything, all results were negative. Not once of this whole month have I actually thrown up, just pain and the fear of throwing up. I have now understood that it is anxiety, all my "gastric" problems, are anxiety the sweating the rapid heart beat, have had a few episodes during school. I am in the healing stage, as you can say I will try these little tips to help calm myself down when I feel this way. Thank you!

The worst part about panic attacks, for me, is if people see them. If someone I know sees me have one, I sort of resent them afterwards. I'm learning that if I don't practice the skills and pile more and more information into my mind trying to "fix" my anxiety I become overwhelmed and have a hard time quieting my mind and stay stressed for several days. Its such a relief when the stress lifts. I think the root of my problem is I don't think I deserve to be at peace (for several reasons). It's hard to give myself acceptance, forgiveness, and learn and move on.

Thank you for putting panic attacks into a different perspective for me by not trying to stop the attack. I never knew that it would make it worse! I was in 3 serious automobile accidents and a few months after I developed the panic attacks while driving, and when I was stopped at a signal light that's when they occur and are very dangerous because I feel as if I'm going to faint and lose control of my senses and there is no escape when you're in a car you feel trapped. I've had to pull over and park and call for a taxi to take me home. It's been 6 years since I've driven & I do not own a car which has confided me to my home. I need help and can't keep allowing this to go untreated. I had to drop out of nursing school and now suffer from agoraphobia so my quality of life is extremely poor. I have not yet discussed this with my primary care physician because I feel so embarrassed. Does anyone here go to a support group or therapy and does it help? Thanks and blessings.

When I get an attack I usually start to sweat first than the dizziness comes, and the other symptoms like chestpains, heart racing, numbness, overthinking, etc, sometimes I just let the panic attacks happen without trying to stop it, or think about it I'll just close my eyes, and lay down down. It's easy said than done.

I am going to adopt this strategy, i've been experiencing it often lately due to several things that happened this year but mostly it happens on a sunday afternoon, when i think that tomorrow i need to work and that at work there is someone who is intimidating me. In this period that i'm experiencing, i find difficulties to stand up for myself and make him stop which causes attacks. But i'm going to acknowledge it.

Hi guys, I’ve always wanted to say all of this so if you could read and reply I’d be so so grateful. I completely understand if you scroll straight past, I am a stranger after all. I have an immense phobia of sick, to the point where I can’t leave the house and do daily activities. Whenever I start to feel the tiniest bit nauseous, I start to have a huge panic anxiety attack and end up talking myself into actually feeling ill. I’m currently experiencing this right now, but 20 times worse as my girlfriend caught a sick bug the other day and I’m panicking that I have caught it too, even though I’m not showing any symptoms and it’s already been over two days. It gets that bad to the point I’m physically shaking and I can’t breathe yet I can look completely fine to everyone else around me. I have been getting better, getting out more and going out with my friends more frequently. I’ve had this since I can remember and i’m only 16. I feel like this is taking away my childhood. My girlfriend knows all about this and helps me through it every time, and I am so so grateful for that, that someone at least tried to understand what goes on in my head. My sister has been doing the same as this for years, she’s 18 now. She recently got diagnosed with high-functioning autism and anxiety. As I can vividly remember ever encounter I have ever had with sick, be it with myself or other people (my first memory of it being when I was 3) and I can also remember every single word everyone has ever said around that time, does that hint autistic traits? I do overthink everything but whenever I bring it up to my parents they say that I’m just copying my sister and that it’s no big deal, as they can’t see what’s actually going on inside my head. Thanks for reading, I know none of you are probably going to stick with this to the end, but it feels good to finally say this - even if it is to other people on the internet. I really hope you are all ok, and never have to go through something like this. Everything is going to be okay in the end, and if it’s not okay, it’s not the end.

RE Chris B The reason loads of people preach this is it does work for most. I had panic for 17 years & stopped it this way. I know there are a lot of people who have never had a panic attack explaining the methods badly & longwindedly when you actually need something short and crystal clear. You have to understand Chris that when people like me finally defeat the beast we instantly wanna go out and literally hunt down other people who are suffering and tell them the GOOD NEWS! What youve gotta understand is the 1st stage of a panic attack is a mild or moderate sensation of adrenaline- that is a biological thing that your not aiming to stop. What you are aiming to stop is your reaction to that. The reaction that causes a panic attack is to panic that that sensation is occuring, to dread it and fear it. When you react that way the sensation doubles- if you do not try to repress the sensation and let it flow IT DOES NOT DOUBLE! If it does double then you realise it has doubled & develop terror at the observation. Then it quadruples. At all stages of this you are trying to stop the sensations & this rejection of them is what makes them increase in strength. The way to get rid of that pattern is to recognise that is you build a dam to stop a river flowing...you will end up with a tsunami. But if you let the river flow it will only ever be a small amount of water. Once the panic attack is at its full level of ycourse you have a lot of water behind the dam so if you remove the wall it will be strong sensations. But if you allow the initial flow of feelings & sensations you are reducing the amount of water behind the dam. When you let some water out ie stop repressing the sensations you need to be relaxed & just observe it. its like a leap of faith. Imagine you have a water release pipe in the dam. You let out a bit of water & you say no I want to get more water out. You turn the tap & larger water comes out & you say more more. Its the same with the physical sensations of panic. It sounds nuts that when you are at quadruple point you say more more...make the sensations stronger make them double.......but as soon as you say this and really want it ..they half in strength Hope this helps I reccommend "How to stop a panic attack" video by username panic away as a clearer explanation than this current video

Thanks for your explanation. I agree with you. The only small thing I would add is that there is nothing wrong with the initial sensations. They are just unique sensation with nothing inherently bad about them. Once this is really recognized, then these sensations are not resisted, which prevents the additional layers from being added on.

I've watched this video twice and I've been trying before I even found your videos. I've had panic attacks for the past 16 years. Was on Xanax for 10 years until I finally went to a psychiatrist and she switched me to Klonopin which helped for a few years but now at a low dose my attacks are back horribly. I've been a nurse for 10 years and was always fine at work until one day I couldn't even walk into my job. I had to quit working at a career I love and am very good at. My psychiatrist now refuses to give me anything else except different anti-depressants every time I see her and says that maybe I should find a new doctor. Sigh. I get attacks just thinking about getting one. I KNOW better. I practice the whole self talk out loud when I'm having one, I have no problem telling those around me, even strangers, that I'm having a panic attack or that I have anxiety. I don't run from them anymore usually because I know that only makes your amygdyla trained that there is an issue for next time. I get the pounding heart, dizzy, sweaty palms and feet, hyperventilate even though I've gotten better at breathing, which helps. My biggest fear is that I'm going to pass out. I have this irrational fear of running. If I can't see an escape route, like a door or a place to sit down, I freak out. I haven't been able to grocery shop for two years now. I have to have others go into the store for me. Some days are better than others. I'm so tired of this. I'm hoping that your techniques work. I tell myself during attacks that "It's only anxiety, it's nothing worse. It isn't going to kill me." I tell myself to feel it and to go with it...but it doesn't help all the time. Now I'm getting married next month and am flying to Algeria to do it. I am worrying so much over the flight. I'm not afraid of moving to a different country, or marrying or anything new like that...my BIGGEST fear is that I'm going to have non-stop panic attacks during the whole time.

Your description of the "battle" that happens during a panic attack was so enlightening. I want to ask you a question though. My panic attacks usually come out of the blue. I am not obsessing or dreading anything when the big ones come on. But, after having one, which can be scary as it involves very physical reactions, I will spend days obsessing about the panic attack itself. (Am I having a heart attack?, Is there something really wrong with me?) So, back to them coming out of the blue….How do you recommend "giving in to" a panic attack that does not necessarily have a source to begin with?
@NoahElkrief
@NoahElkrief 10 жыл бұрын
Lori McKinnon Hi Lori, the first thing I would do is go to a doctor, describe the sensations, and ask if these sensations are a physical illness or a panic attack. You might be able to just check that out online. If you can have a reasonable level of confidence that the sensations aren't killing you then I recommend allowing the feeling and discovering that there is nothing wrong with it. I explain that in this video: What Your Feelings REALLY Mean - (Hint: I'ts not what you think) If you still believe that the sensations might be killing you, then you need to disbelieve the idea that getting sick or dying is bad. That's a little bit deeper.

hi lori, i had my first PA in 1988 and although i don't get them very often anymore i had a bad one about a week ago right after working out. like you, it take days or sometimes a few weeks before i quit thinking about them after having one. my guess when you talk about "out of the blue" is you might experience some strange physical sensations for some reason, then you think what the hell was that, am i okay, which usually keys an adrenaline rush, then the physical sensations get worse, then full blown PA. i don't think there's always a source, usually just strange physical sensations at the wrong time, maybe while driving or late at night alone, or when you're in a public place. i just try to avoid doing things or being in places where they have previously bothered me. watching these videos and trying to understand them helps. hope that helps.

In class, before going to speak in public, hands shaking and sweating, the voice... you knowing that everyone is going to be looking at you. Oh boy. And it’s all in our mind, it’s all automatic. I’ll work on being free from this like a full time job. It’s massively lifechanging.

Yesterday was my first day at a new fast food job (one that has 2 drive throughs). Right when I got there, I was put on both drive throughs and cashing people out at the same time. By myself. It wasn’t hard, but it was hard to learn where everything was by myself, resulting in many mistakes and a slow moving drive through. Instead of, idk, training me, the manager decided to yell at me every time I got something wrong. I finally got the hang of it after about 5 hours (it was an 8 hour shift) but that’s when I had my anxiety attack. I haven’t had one since middle school. My vision went dark, I couldn’t hear anything, I felt extreme nausea, it was almost hard to stand, and I was so dizzy that I thought I was going to faint. There was nobody around me to take over the drive through so I had to keep working through it. It was so hard, but I’m proud of myself for pushing through it. But fuck that job tbh. I got an interview at a better place yesterday, and I think it went really well! I think I’m goin to get it, but there were also a lot of people there for interviews. I know nobodies going to read all this, but it felt good to just vent. Thanks for coming to my ted talk. :)

Today I had a panic attack and I did not know about this video. I had previously watched the video on how to deal with anger. I kind of used the technique for anger. I asked myself: How do I know that, in the story of my life, if the panic attack is bad for my life ? I was feeling like dying so I asked myself: Do I know if I'm going to die ? I answered no and then I realized if I don't know if I'm dying or not, then why should I worry about it. I just explored the feeling I had and I just let it rose to the surface. I started to feel better a couple of minutes after and I was so happy. I used to blame myself for my panic attacks. I was thinking that I was failing at life because of my panic attacks and I was blaming myself and it would only make it worst. I was judging myself and I was thinking that I was weak. I saw many doctors in the past and it was like nobody have been able to help me for the past 15 years. This is a great channel. Thank you very much for your help Noah. I am watching your videos everyday. Thank you for sharing your outstanding knowledge with everyone. I will not fight the panic attacks anymore and I will certainly not judge myself for feeling this way.

Thanks for sharing this great video :) I'm Thai and I'm now struggling with social anxiety and panic attack.Every time i try to push myself out there to create any interpersonal relation with others, I end up questioning myself ,usually with a type of Q like "Is my state of mind right or wrong?"(It seems like trying to check what is in my mind all the time),and even observing myself whether i'm now in the present moment or not,later anxiety attack occurs,i'm not so sure about myself. Also every time when i try to pay attention to where i want it(attention) to go such as conversation ,what people are talking or even eye contact,it doesn't seem naturally for me.Then i feel that i sink into the middle of cluttered thoughts and uncomfortable feeling right away.I feel upset when i cannot have comfortable feeling and be able to be myself.It seems like i'm worried about my worries all the time T T. Also when i accidentally feel relax and comfortable with my own skin than later time when i get to confront with people I will afraid to loose those senses,and it makes me nervous again.I don't know if you would understand what i means coz my English isn't good , i have try my best to explain it all to you.It's really frustrated to feel this way again and again , i really want to get away of these problems.I would really appreciate if you could give me some suggest.Anyway thank you a lot :)

Wow this is like seeing a therapist although I haven't seen one but hearing these advices really do calm me down a bit, I will try to remember these advises if I have another panic attack... Usually get them early in the morning , the symptoms are very similar to having a heart-attack that's why it's freaking me out... Cold hands and feet, trouble breathing, nausea, racing heart... I went to the emergency twice and doc said my heart was fine, and the attack went away after I saw the doc ....

Hi Marisol, I would be happy to help you. Just send me a message or email. There is no such thing as social anxiety disorder. There are only thoughts. And when certain thoughts pop up in your head and you believe them, those thoughts create feelings. But if you learn how to stop believing your thoughts, those thoughts will stop creating your unwanted feelings and panic attacks.
