This week see's us trek between Ringwood and Christchurch, down through some rugged heathland. We also ask the question, exactly how do you stop an Express Train back in 1870, when you really shouldn't be allowed to.
No additional links this week because we would love for you to pop over to our Just Giving page here and donate if you can: www.justgiving.com/crowdfundi...

Hi Paul and Rebecca. I put a link up earlier to say yes that is still a right of way. I don't think links are allowed so it never showed. Lord Manners owns that land but leases it out (not sure whom to). He is a nice chap though so may be worth you checking with him and also BCP council rights of way team. I did report that blocked Row some years ago. Hope it works out well. Good luck. Mark

Very interesting and brings back many happy memories of the area. That used to be an old tactic; tell everyone who comes by, that the path no longer exists, build over it and then ask for the path to be declared redundant on the grounds that no one is using it! Easy way to acquire some land, adding value to you own (allegedly). Also, let’s all be thankful that we didn’t get to see Santa’s ‘sack’ at any point in the video! 🙈

I'm assuming you're using the most upto date maps when showing the OS maps, however they don't always make all the changes right away when a footpath gets re-routed. You might want to consider reporting this to the local council's Highways Department as permission is required to close a public footpath and to do so without permission is illegal.

"Missing" public footpaths are a pain. especially if there is no obvious way around. Its not always delays at Ordnance Survey in updating maps either. There are a couple close to me (Oxfordshire) that have not been walkable in living memory, but are still shown on the Council definitive map. We are very lucky to have some of best mapping in the world. My other gripe is "permissive" paths, where the landowner has grated temporary access. Very often these are not shown on OS maps at all. Where they are, they can be revoked (most recently found on the Templer way in Devon). Great video ans always.

I'm going to show my age here... Back in the year 2000 as a young Venture Scout we walked from Bala to Dolgellau along the disused trackbed. At several points we were told that 'this is not a footpath', despite being marked as such on the OS map (at the time). To add to confusion at boundaries styles and steps are in place along the path. If the land owners didn't want you on their land why were they providing access?

Great video nice to see you down in my part of the world. A lot of the track bed was lost when the A338 Wessex Way was built in the late 1960s as the road engineers followed some of the same route into Bournemouth also its a pity you couldn’t look round the Avon Causeway pub / Hurn station as it still has one of the platforms with a Pullman Carriage and Shunting Locomotive. It also has some information inside about the station and line with some old photos of the station when it was in operation 👍😎

@@egpx When I was a kid, Hurn Airport was still basically a few old prefab concrete huts at an airfield. Every so often my grandad would take me and my siblings to the refreshment hut where he could have a can of beer and watch the planes taking off etc. We kids had colas, and used every copper coin in his pockets to play the old one-armed bandit. But, sometimes we would go to the Avon Causeway instead, where we sat outside, and he would sneak us a half a shandy. We felt terribly grown-up!

Hurn was originally called 'Heron Bridge' (over the Moors River), but the locals soon put an end to all that nonsense. Prior to the opening of Heathrow, the newly-built Hurn Airport was for a year or two the place where planes carrying trans-Atlantic passengers landed - which explains the visit by top pilot Paul Tibbetts, (bringing Ike?) - later he named his new B-29 after his mom - 'Enola Gay'. 'Avon Causeway' pub landlord Joe (and Nelly) Palmer had 2 or 3 carriage interiors built inside the Pub complete with sliding doors in the '70s and later bought that Pullman carriage on the track outside. Happy memories of Steve 'Odge' tapping his very accurate watch as Nelly attempted to snatch the last mouthfull in his glass at the end of drinking-up time . .

Rebecca's bad ancle reminded me of something I have wondered about. When you walk in such a straight line from one place to another, do you drive to the first place, walk some distance, then double back, drive to next stretch and walk and so on. Maybe a Christmas bonus can be the logistics, how far do you really walk? In this video I hope Rebecca at least got a ride back to the car if it was parked at the beginning of the walk. Who would have thought? Rebbeca just following Paul around. Probably to make sure Paul doesn't get lost in all his excitement!

Just come across the channel and working my way through the years of content. Are you aware of Rye and Camber Tramway? Route is mostly accessible and got some interesting WW2 history attached to it aswell. I've flicked through your videos and couldn't see that you've covered it but apologies if I missed it

Current EDS completion estimate: 03/12/2071. That's 6 months added to the estimate following the "The Railway that Behaved like a Canal - The Leicester and Swannington" video. Blimey, that's 50 years from now!

New subscriber from the United States here. I love your channel because of canals and trains and history. I wonder if they found the canals useful in the wars 1 and 2?

Interesting video. There was a very good Ever Decreaainf Circles [comedy] episode on Public Rights of Way. I remember watching it as a child. I now work in mapping and addressing for a living. Perhaps it had some subconscious impact in some way.

I once worked at the Avon causeway and it had a weird residual atmosphere in the hotel. Whenever I was in the carriage it felt like it was gonna leave the station any minute
