Thanks again, Tom! We had Jax at Phoenix’s dock diving competition this weekend and he did great! Over the past 72 hours he’s been in close proximity to over 40 different dogs and dozens of people and not a single uncontrollable lash out at all! One small instance where he lashed out once but it was triggered by two other dogs going ballistic about 20’ from him but we brought him into heel and he snapped right out of it! A little over a week ago we wouldn’t have even been able to take him, thanks again!!!

@@tomdavisofficialI have a female that looks like this dog (she is a black german Shepherd mix) and she is reactive to dogs and people, except for kids. It’s almost like she is being protective of anyone who is behind her, like my daughters and I when walking her. She does know the leave it command. But she goes from zero to a 1000 in no time. This video will be helping me to get her to stop. Ordering the dogtra collar and the other one mentioned when I’m don’t the video! I also have a 1.5yo pit/rottie/husky mix who is 85lbs of pure muscle! They both have broke leashes and cables rated for dogs up to 250lbs. We are working on getting a fence for the yard but need to wait for the survey and it’s taking forever bc the house next to us is for sale. One of my biggest issues is my husband who refuses to go along with a regular collar/pinch or e collar bc our shepherd has gotten lose before so he insists on a harness she can’t get out of. I’ll figure something out tho. I want to be able to go hiking with them off leash.

Put the harness on and have the main leash to the color but a safety leash to the collar and the harness. Tom uses these with his pinch collars as well.

Tom, we are so grateful for all your training last weekend! I am still in shock of how far you helped Jax come in such a short period of time. I am able to walk out my front door and not have to stress about him reacting to a person or dog walking by. We are able to get out and do more with Jax because of the knowledge and tools you gave us. It was so great working with you and we can’t thank you enough!

@@randykoeller5256 I recently got my 70 lb rottie mix a harness that clips in the front, and it's helped a TON with his pulling. The idea being that if they pull, rather than dragging you the way they can with a collar or leash, the clip being in the front means that their pulling turns them around to look at you. It cut the amount of pulling in half immediately, and the added benefit is that when they do pull and it turns them around, it puts you into their field of vision. Good luck!

The e-collar was a game changer for us. My pup would just loose her mind, so excited, jumping on people, practically mauling them. Ecollar training changed that. Then she started barking like crazy for no good reason, again becoming overly excited. The ecollar fixed that too. I understand that a dog will bark, and that is OK, but it is not OK to bark just to bark. It saved us and her a lot of frustration. I am using a prong collar for walks & training and just ordered the plastic pinch collar recommended here. She is doing very well not pulling and walks are actually enjoyable for both of us. I hope the new collar offers the same success. Thanks for this great video.

I'm in two different 'positive reinforcenent only' group classes with my two dogs. I trained then with the balance training method, and we are there to practice. One is still reactive in some situations, but we never have any issues in the class so far. It has reactive dogs in each class. The trainers only redirect them or take them for a short walk. My dogs perform very well, and we get so many compliments from the trainers and other owners. They ask my secret, and it's so frustrating not to tell them anything about Tom.

with my dog due to not being able to afford an e collar I did the observe and wait to treat method. basically he only got treated for being calm and observing but not fixating. it also helps that I trained him to give eye contact periodically. if he deviated he got a leash check since he responds o leash pressure pretty well. nothing aginst the ecollar just sharing a glimmer of success that I had.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. And I’ve learned a lot. I have an reactive afghan hound and I have been on lots of courses (positive only), but none of the methods works. I live in Norway and most of the tools you’re using is illegal here, and all the dog trainers around here only train positive and tell me to just walk away with my dog whenever he reacts. They even think that using a normal collar is hurting the dog. Making me use a harness on my big, reactive dog. It gets really frustrating that the reactivity doesn’t improve with the positive only methods. I really love your work and I wished there were trainers like you around here.

So, e-collar might be good for very reactive dogs? I've been working on my Mals reactivity for almost a year now. She's definitely better, but I would definitely like a clearer signal than just leave it. Leave it works to lessen the reaction, but that's only to dogs/people/ vehicles that are pretty far away. Used to be lunging, snapping, barking, kinda like this dog. We've been working on exposure therapy, impulse control, and a few other things as well. Prong doesnt work and only heightens her reactivity due to misuse before I got her. She redirected every time she reacted. So I put that away and started using a slip lead. Still redirected but less. Through a lot of patience and going out daily, she no longer redirects, but reactivity is still an issue even though I do everything I can to prevent it.

ive had luck using a front fitting harness and teaching my dog to look at me on walks and threshold training. as for barking out the window I first go see whats up and then i tell him "shhh!" with this i just told him the command when he was calm and quiet already then praised him for it. after a bit he understood what it meant. with reactivity sometimes i have to correct him by turning him away from the other dog. prongs are no the best on terriers since they are made to rev the dog up. look up mark dubose and stonnie dennis on here...both of them have some good tips for dealing with difficult dogs.

I'm so disapointed that most of the trainers whithin my province (Canada) are anti correction/tools and are purely positive reinforcement and don't believe in holding accountable a dog. I haven't found a single trainer that will use those tools and support my dog and I in our training, they always wanna remove everything and put my reactive sensible dog on a harness. I don't understand why I gotta explain why my dog has an e-collar and 98% of the people think I abuse my dog by using that. Having an European Doberman that was bred in Poland from award winning and multi-titles lines, I cannot afford only positive and gotta let my dog knows that there is limits that can't be crossed. Yet, all the looks I get when out and about. I wish I was closer to you!

Love to see a video on stopping just barking. My rescue will bark at something within what seems like a normal reaction to warn, like someone in our wooded area or even deer trying to get in fence. However then once the event should be over he will go on barking. He’s no longer barking as a warning, he just seems to bark not paying attention to anything in particular.

Great video! I had just finished yelling at my Yorkie mix for barking at top pitch through the window at another dog. Unless I close the blinds, he does this all day. And we walk very early in the am to avoid all other dogs. When there is another dog walking, I try to hide him behind a car tire or brick mailbox so he can’t see the other dog. He is pulling my 73 yr old arthritic hand too hard and I’ve been thinking of getting him another home. I reduced him 3 yrs ago from a shelter. They think he was about 9 then. So 11 now, and his nurturing was right before I rescued him. He may have been a street dog before. Where do I start?

It might be a good idea to work on engagement training with your yorkie inside, and start working on obedience inside as well. That way when things are about to go crazy in the real world. You can use obedience to redirect your dogs attention back onto you. The answer isn’t always so black and white though, it’s gonna take a while to get him to a level where you can walk him through other dogs. Also I’m sorry about your hand, maybe it’d be a good idea to also look into professional help?

I've heard that using e-collars on dogs with fear based reactivity is not appropriate. Is this true? Will be consulting with a local trainer soon. I want to make sure that I have as much accurate information, and know what to look for, regarding the trainer, as possible in order to know if he's someone I can feel comfortable working with. You are using the e collar wrong. You have to see the other dog first and watch your dogs bodylanguage and correct it at the right time, that's before he's at that point were the e collar can't work (meaning, when it already leashes out, you have missed the timing to give the correction). If he is at that point and you use the e collar you are making your dog think, that the dog he sees is causing him pain, so the behaviour keeps getting worse.

Is the prong collar more effective than the pinch collar you recommended, the one you use with your pup? My mastiff is over 70 lbs at 4 months and he is well trained in most circumstances but sometimes he sees another dog and his training goes out the window. Is 4.5 months too young to start e collar training with a pup? He is in dog training 3x a week and i work with him 2-4 hrs a day at home, but my trainer doesn’t do e collar, and he knows his commands but if he gets a trigger, the prong had zero effect and I’m a very small female.

Tom I have a question. My dog is not aggressive against me what soever, but when he sees other dogs he gets aggressive and barks at them and tries to go at them, but what I noticed ALOT is that the other dogs approach him, or bark at him first and my dog simply doesnt back down. When this happens for example I was just outside the dog park, I knew I wouldn't take him inside because there were other dogs there but the group of dogs came to the fence and starting growling at my dog and my dog did the same back. I put my dog in the sitting position as he was barking and I got angry and said YOU are going to have to get used to it, the dogs went back and forth and my dog now with me again tried pulling me very hard everywhere so he can pee. As he was pulling me very hard and hurting my arms I took him and sweeped him in a controlled manner ignorer to dominate him and let him know that what he is doing is NOT okay. every time I could calm him down I would say up and he would continue to drag me around I was outside the dog park this whole time. The group of dogs came and the ladies who own them came after them after their own dogs didnt listen to them when they said come, then the group of ladies started saying derogatory remarks to me while I payed NO attention to them whatsoever they said poor dog theres training for this kind of behavior its YOUR fault he is aggressive you are making him aggressive you know nothing about dogs. My dog is an island dog that was taking off the streets by me ZERO manners, he's a loving dog but only to me. but he drags me around my question is this if I was outside the fence on school property and these people started calling me derogatory names while their OWN dogs were barking at my dog causing my dog to bark back did they harass me and do wrong and assume that I didnt know what I was doing. My dog is a feral dog from an island he has no manners, I try EVERYTHING to make him listen but he is unneutered and he is very dog aggressive but doesnt necessarily attack them he just wants to be dominant. But what I see most times is OTHER dogs start first because they see my dog is not scared or cowering by them.

I kept her from not being put down she's 3. Why are some utterances of shit getting bleeped, but others aren't? It's so weird, and, I dunno why, but I find that hilarious.

Have someone in America order one for you & ship it to you. That’s ridiculous to ban a tool that helps dogs 😑

It is what you allow. You have to be firm. Better to be proactive than reactive. You must not tolerate bad behavior and squash it dead set before they become a power house.

He looks a lot like my Zelda, except my Zelda has those lab ears. That's the problem with Zelda. She READS BIG SCARY ATTACK DOG, and she loves sprinting up to people and then wait for pets. She's a very special girl. Her opening move at the shelter when I brought Trapper with me, was to eat another dog's poop. Not Trapper's, another shelter dog. Trapper had an equally bad first impression, he defiantly peed when I was in the meeting area with him. That's when I knew he was perfect for me. Also since he wasn't a reactionary dog during the walk around the kennels. Zelda wasn't a crazy dog when I met her, she was more excited but respectful. Tail wagged and showed signs of curiosity. I got her since she looked cool, same with Trapper. LOL... They were both 100% IMPULSE BUYS, did everything you shouldn't do when adopting, but got two amazing dogs.

Hey Tom, One of the things I'm having a TON of trouble finding is what to do about a dog who has fearful aggression specifically in the home. My one year old rottweiler shepherd mix is completely fine meeting people outside of the house (on leash, in bars, their homes, etc.) but the minute we're in the house he barks, lunges, hides behind me, expresses his anal glands... this is most intense around men and young children, and I've been doing a ton of research around what to do and it's gotten better, but it still makes me nervous sometimes to have people in my home, especially kids. I would love to see your take on what to do to help him relax. I hate the idea of having to shut him away any time I have guests over, but I don't want to risk his barking and lunging escalating either!

Many ecollars have two basic modes. One mode is vibrate and the other is electronic stimulation. Here Tom is using the vibration mode.

I don't know why my dogs became reactive with age. Trapper was RARELY reactive to other dogs, like EXTREMELY RARE. I remember the first time he was, I was at the grocery store and there was a rottweiler doing guard dog things in a shop yard. Trapper did not like that dog. THEN I GOT ZELDA, who was cool for the first year, but recently has been reactive to everything. And Trapper the now 6yr old (foxhound/catahoula) has adopted Zelda's (2 year old dutch/mal/lab) bad behavior. Zelda's bad for almost any dogs. I mean she wants to play with them, Trapper will only speak up if it's a "PROTECTION BREED" (Pits, germans, etc). BUT Zelda and Trapper have now been reacting to elderly, homeless and minorities. Then the other day, I was driving with my dogs in the car, and a father was going for a walk with his downs syndrome 5yr old, and the kid saw Zelda in the car and excitedly exclaimed "DOG!", and she just went off on the poor kid. In an oddly aggressive barking manner. More so than she does for the three groups I mentioned. That was and has been the only time she's really disappointed me. Since she's normally a sweet girl. She plays with the kids in the neighborhood. I feel like Trapper became more reactive with age since he's being more protective of Zelda (whom he broke her leg three weeks into owning her... LOL... yikes, both are shelter pups, both abandoned at 6m; trapper was 1yr old when I got him, Zelda 8m) and me. I tell him, I don't really need protection, since I am quite capable even for a short guy, and I'm strapped to the nines in a very self-defense friendly state.

I have watched a buncha vids. I don't get it I have never had a dog act like any of them in the videos. From my grandpa's hounds to my huskies. No create training. No obedience. The only issues I've ever had is how they love to find dead animals and bring them to me. They run around the property with no leash and never run off. They stay right next to me at all times, they both go out fishing with me on the boat and never have any issues.I Don't get how dogs come to behave like this l.

So why wouldn’t you address the issue as to leash pressure first? That’s what’s causing the reactivity. She is obviously not leading this dog consistently., and my worry is that she’ll take this direction as not on her, and this tool by itself solves the issue. The only time I’ve ever used Electric stimulation collars ( E collar is an Elizabethan collar) is when I’ve been out with my buddies dogs retrieving fowl. He doesn’t even have batteries in the remote., they became collar wise, and follow instruction. Martingale and prong should be sufficient added with your advice you gave her as to directives.
