This is helpful to actually see a mock argument played out. I've known for many years that "I" statements are key, but it's more than just starting a sentence with "I" and then still twisting it to be accusatory. That is a helpful distinction you made. I think it can still be difficult to get past the initial argument being brought up, though. As a person who finds it very difficult to take criticism of any kind, I immediately put up walls and get defensive when I feel that "attack" coming on. If one person is trying to communicate effectively with a non-effective communicator, what are some ways to deal with that situation? With the effective argument method, it does feel more calming, but to get to that point I need to actually stay in the argument and not avoid it which is obviously very uncomfortable. If you could talk about some tips as to how to better stay and listen to and actually address criticism in a relationship, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for the content!
