Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu.
In today’s lesson, we will discuss the difference between two ta’s: تَاء مَفْتُوحَة and تَاء مَرْبُوطَة.
Taa Maftuha (تَاء مَفْتُوحَة) is written as a “flat/open” ta. Like this: ت
Taa Marbuta (تَاء مَرْبُوطَة) is written as a “round/closed” ta.
Like this: ة
Therefore, whenever a person is reciting the Qur’an and wants to stop in a word that ends with تَاء مَفْتُوحَة, the “flat/open” ta, they will stop at the word by stopping as a “ta”.
For example: Allah says in Surah Al-Falaq, Ayah 4:
وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ فِی ٱلۡعُقَدِ
As we see in ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ, the taa at the end of the word is تَاء مَفْتُوحَة so if we want to stop at the end of ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ, we will stop at it as a “taa”.
Like this: وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتْ by putting a sukun on taa.
However, if we do not intend to stop at ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ but want to continue our recitation, we will continue by reciting the kasrah on تَاء مَفْتُوحَة.
So when stopping:
When continuing:
As for تَاء مَرْبُوطَة, when a person wants to stop in a word that ends with تَاء مَرْبُوطَة, the “round/closed” ta, they will stop at the word by stopping as a “ha” and not as a “ta”.
For example: Allah says in Surah An-Nas, Ayah 6:
مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
As we see in ٱلۡجِنَّةِ, the taa at the end of the word is تَاء مَرْبُوطَة so if we want to stop at the end of ٱلۡجِنَّةِ, we will stop at it as a “ha”.
Like this: مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّهْ by putting a sukun on ha and not as مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّتْ.
However, if we do not intend to stop at ٱلۡجِنَّةِ but want to continue our recitation, we will continue by reciting the kasrah on تَاء مَرْبُوطَة.
Like this: مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
So when stopping:
When continuing:
So remember, the difference between تَاء مَفْتُوحَة and تَاء مَرْبُوطَة is that when we stop at تَاء مَفْتُوحَة, we stop at it as “ta”.
But when we stop at تَاء مَرْبُوطَة, we stop at it as “ha”.
However, when we intend to continue our recitation and not stop at a word that ends with تَاء مَفْتُوحَة and تَاء مَرْبُوطَة, we will continue by reciting the “ta” with the appropriate harakah regardless if the word is تَاء مَفْتُوحَة or تَاء مَرْبُوطَة.
