What? I call Bull. YOU can buy a modem/router combo (gateway) with the exact same spec's that Xfinity uses (Xfinity does NOT manufacture modems/routers). And, a MESH router is far superior to getting coverage throughout the house versus the Xfinity modem/router combo so don't think that an Xfinity router is better/more powerful than a MESH router! "Unlimited"? Yes, get the unlimited" plan!
@robertfletcher
@robertfletcher 2 жыл бұрын
Michael, your reommendation of a modem/router combo is good for beginners that want to just plug it in and it work. However, if you live in a home with over 1000 sq. ft, I would recommend getting a WIFI Mesh system. Most Mesh systems are normally set to router mode by default, so the modem itself doesnt need to have a router with it if you already have a mesh system. A mesh system will work with a modem/wifi combo, but that adds an extra network layer and, if you don't turn off the WiFi of the modem/router combo, you will get unneeded extra WiFi noise.
@MichaelSaves
@MichaelSaves 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. 100% agree about mesh systems -- not necessarily 1,000 square feet though. Most gateways can work in homes 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, maybe more with an extender. That's why I didn't go into too much detail on them. But I have played around with a mesh system and would like to do more content on them. I think the mesh systems are easy to set up too. If anyone is reading this and considering one, there are step-by-step instructions using an app for the brand of your mesh system.

The issues I've noticed over time are related to firmware updates. The updates with Xfinity equipment are automatic, but I had a lot of problems with my own setups. I agree. That's xfinity's intention to keep customers paying extra fees every month in "rental equipment fees." Before you know it, those months turn to into years. Xfinity/Comcast out here making millions just in rental fees 👀. They could easily eliminate equipment fees like some of their competitors. Well I guess it's not personal, just how xfinty chooses to do business.
@scottdavisactor
@scottdavisactor Жыл бұрын
Many (most) people use their modem/router for years without ever installing a firmware update! Don't be "worried" that if you go this route that you will have "intermittent internet connectivity issues and other problems". I'm a computer engineer and while I recommend that you update your firmware ~once a year, I have RARELY seen a customer who lost their internet because they didn't update the modem/router firmware. NOTE: you can also have your modem/router (gateway) automatically update, just like the Xfinity equipment, so this whole issue is a moot point.🚫

It sounds like a good idea, but setting up your own cable modem router can be a bit tricky if you're not technically inclined. Also, the upfront costs of a cable modem router that supports the speed of the very fast Internet service you got from Comcast can be quite high, for example, the Arris G36 is $325 and the Netgear CAX80 is $442.

I'm in IT and have both rented and owned equipment. I went back to renting. This video is fine and all and yes, you can buy an acceptable modem/router for their services and be perfectly fine. However: if ANYTHING goes wrong and I mean ANYTHING they will just chalk it up to being a problem on your end and or your router/modems problem! Also, good luck if you aren't tech savvy in theses situations! Think of it as insurance paying the monthly equipment fee PLUS after a year or 2 they come out with newer and better equipment. You just have to poke them a bit (I just did that with the new X1!) to get them as they typically don't just send them out. I would recommend people do their research and determine how handy they are instead of just buying their own equipment and thinking they are sticking it to the big corps. Either way good luck. I've paid for Xfinity internet for the past five years, I pay for 100mbps and it's never above 30mbps unless I call and complain, then it's around 100mbps for a day or 2, and back to 30. I've called about this no less than a dozen times over the past 2 years... and the last two times they scheduled a technician to come out where I had to be home for a 2-3 hour window, and both times the technician didn't show up, didn't call, didn't care. Comcast is the most awful atrocity of customer service on the planet.

I wish it were easier to do this with verizon. I have been doing it for Xfinity but I just switched because Verizon's monthly fee for internet is so much lower. That's true even with the $15 a month router fee. But it looks like I'd have to pay about $150 for a compatible router and I can't use the one I was using with xfinity. Oh well, I'm still getting a better deal. I'll keep looking for deals on the routers. Oh and I know that $150 is better than $15 a month in the long run. So if you can swing it, I would recommend it.

Gotta watch out for the trickery. Even if the modem or modem/router you get says it can do gig speed doesn't mean it'll do it on a certain provider. For example, I got a arris SB9160 , and right on the box it says it'll do 1.4 Gbps. But on Xfinity it'll only do like a little over 800Mbps.
@klippoth
@klippoth 2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing you bought a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and expected Gig speeds, because the box advertises that it's capable of that, BUT you must have DOCSIS 3.1 to achieve Gig speeds, because a 3.0 modem will only go as fast as the system is designed for, and Xfinity has no intention of adding more 3.0 Channels taking up valuable spectrum when 3.1 is where it's going. This is stated clearly on the Xfinity website.

@@klippoth even some of the docsis 3.1 modems don't go over 1000 Mbps on xfinity. The reason I say that is you can only get free unlimited data if you use their equipment. If your using your own equipment it's $30.00 a month. The upside of using you own equipment is configurability. The speeds of xfinity new wifi⁶ routers great!!!

One thing every customer should know is that you will not get exact same speed of your internet plan with wireless connection. Let's say, you have internet plan of 100mbps speed. You will get exact or more than your subscript 100mbps speed with ethernet connection directly from modem to your pc/laptop. But with wifi wireless connection, don't expect to get exact 100mbps speed. You will get maximum 60-70mbps with wireless if your device connection is good.

I've owned my own equipment since September 2020, and have had no issues with either the modem or router (I purchased both separately). Just remember, Google is your friend. You can find answers to most questions about modem or router administration online. For example, I recently needed to have a dedicated IP address for one of the devices on my network. Although the user interface for the router varies by model, the process for finding the particular place on the administration of your router will be the same, so I was easily able to find what I needed to setup that dedicated IP address. As for equipment failure or the device reaching its end of life, you'll likely have many years down the road before that becomes an issue.

Yes, so if you have a problem with let's say a Motorola device, Xfinity isn't going to provide the support like it does for the Xfinity gateway. But Motorola does have customer support. You really shouldn't have a lot of problems with your router and modem though. If you do, the problem may be the actual connection to your home -- and Xfinity (or your provider) would still be responsible for that.
