Why do some people say the clutch plate diff is the only one better than a wavetrac? I'm a bit confused now.

It depends on the use case or the type of clutch differential in conversation. There are a lot of terrible plate differentials. One of the use cases that plate differentials are subjectively better, thanks to the higher torque bias ratio is professional motorsport where constant servicing to maintain performance, and high NVH is not an issue. With the Wavetrac, you get a lot of the performance of a high-end clutch diff, without any of the maintenance, or NVH. In the context of drag racing, a helical gear and pinion LSD like the Wavetrac LSD is significantly more durable as it can handle much higher shock loads associated with high traction and high torque. Saying one is better than the other, is not correct, it really depends on the use case and your specific requirements and tolerance to NVH.
