I spent the weekend organizing and documenting what I have on hand. It was eye opening (and a bit depressing) to realize the waste. Spending $30 on something only to realize I already had two unopened boxes of said item, or throwing away expired items when I had purchased additional because it was on sale. It also opened my eyes to the fantasy self items (learning this term from you has been invaluable). Lessons learned. Thank you, Marissa, for sharing your experiences and lessons learned.

I asked all these questions and still wanted to buy the item. The item excites me that much that I believe it would spark joy and bring happiness for me forever and ever. It would add value to ME! Check check check five times. BUT then I asked myself would the item add more value to my life than something else of the same price, something I am saving for. The answer was an easy NO.

"When" is the one I need to put on my brakes the most! I have an issue with hoarding, and feeling like if I don't buy something right away, I'll never have the opportunity again. I'm on a low-buy/budget situation where I have a set budget for the whole year (once it's gone, it's gone!), and it's really helping me slow down and think longer before I commit to buying something.

I think your tip to write down items you desire on a list and not buy them immediately is an excellent one. If you can delay the purchase, even briefly, you are much more likely to only make purchases you really desire/need and prevent or greatly limit your impulse/instant gratification purchases.

Totally agree so many people buy to keep up with everyone around them or feel they will be judged to wear the same outfit. This year is my first year I have put a no buy challenge for the entire year last year I did a low buy / no buy alternating between the months, so I'm totally ready for a strict no buy and I'm not lying I'm loving it. It really makes you realize how many bad spending habits everyone has around you. I'm not saying nothing though lol 😆 My minimalist life taken to the next level with financial freedom such a good feeling.

I don't go out much due to the pandemic and I work from home - have become a eBay seller and now also buyer. There are many new items on eBay that are cheaper than buying new in the store, so check out options there if it's something you really need. BTW I made $300 in January selling things online - and have learned how many ridiculous things can be sold on eBay, like parts of items (a lid, a drip tray for a coffee machine, old calendars, etc.). I sold a recent but rare political button for $50.

Hi Marissa! Thank you for another excellent video ♥I’m doing the no spend challenge with you from New Zealand. After a blow out Dec and Jan (on gifts and travel) I really need to claw back on the credit card debt. The credit card is gone from my wallet and I won’t be using it again so step one done ✅. I have done the most beautiful spreadsheet that shows my weekly spend, by category, against my annual budget…with a master sheet showing cumulative totals as the year goes on. (Feeling a little bit proud of that…can you tell lol). My weaknesses are online subscriptions (for music/movies) which is my entertainment, and takeaway food/Uber Eats just before grocery day. Looking forward to saving (and making more!) money this month with you. PS love the dressing gown fashion…I can relate!

I just placed a grocery order to pick up tomorrow (curbside) instead of going inside the store. Lately, I've found myself roaming around & picking up things I don't actually need. Especially if I happen to notice the clearance aisle at Walmart! That's dangerous for me. I usually find things that would make a "great gift", but I need to give away all the "great gifts" I already have stashed at home before I buy more! 😁

I love love the last one because people truly need to realize that you are perfect just the way you are. U don't need a brand new car just to tell people hey i better than you are because i have money and i got a new car. No guys, don't treat yourself like that and also don't treat others like that either. You are perfect and also the people that are around you are perfect. Be you and be yourself. Always stay true to yourself no matter what life brings you. If you literally don't have the real actual cash in your pocket or in your hand then that should stop you right there and say to yourself, you know what i don't have that money to buy a new car right now but if i hustle and work hard and save money then one day soon, yes i will be able to afford it and drive in it and say yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay i did it. Always remember anything is possible but you got to believe in yourself and stay true that hard and don't forget work work hard every day. There is not a day that goes by that i am not working. I work everyday.

I buy the essential stuff I need not what I don't. I collect memories not things. I am 49 turning 50 Year's young next year, I would hate to leave my possessions behind. Only to have someone else deside what they should do with my stuff. When I leave this mortality of life behind me. "You can't take it with you, you came with nothing. One leaves with nothing".... We lost my parents sometime back it was hard desiding what to do with their remaining proprietorship of thing's? Happy to report though we cleared their home, with nothing remaining. My moto now in life is; "you can take the possessions of those thing. Yet the memories will always remain".

Hey Marissa, great topic you chose for this month! 🤗 I‘m pretty good at not spending money on new stuff. Maybe five new pieces of clothes a year. No dining out (well, the virus made that easy), ordering food next to never. Sticking to electric devices until they fall apart. BUT as soon as I enter a supermarket for shopping groceries….🙈🙈🙈 I tried a couple of tricks: Never go grocery shopping with an empty stomach, writing down a shopping list, don‘t even coming close to aisles that are not on the list,…🤷🏻‍♀️ I enter the supermarket with a list of basics and special offers. I leave the supermarket with even more basics and more special offers. Because it’s just a couple of bucks, right?! Maybe I even buy myself a special treat like expensive oil or cheese because I was such a smart shopper who bought five bottles of her favorite detergent that was a surprise special offer. Needless to say that I don‘t even have the space for storing it. 😎 I sometimes feel like some aliens are in control of my brain as soon as I enter the supermarket. 👽 So I’m going through my shopping cart right at the end of my tour and bring back the stuff that is way too much or too expensive. It works out from time to time but what a waste of time! If you have any other trick for me please let me know! 🙏 P.S.: My mum used to have the same shopping habits. And our cellar looked like a habitat for a bunch of food preppers.

Definetely!!! I now need to learn this. I let other peope influence me way too much. Just stay who I am and don't care what other people say or think. But I find it hard and I'm not sure if it is completely possible. Because we live with other people and somehow we have to fit in the group.

Six days in and im doing well! Haven't spent a unnecessary penny .... Though my wish is increasing 😂. Also really proud of myself, I wanted a new satin bonnet as mine just falls of my head in bed, but Instead of buying another one, I'm using a sleeping bag bag, that has an adjustable strap, and is made of satin 😂. It's a little big on me but I look just as rediculous as I do with a satin bonnet anyways. And it works just as wel l on protecting my wavy hair and it actually stays on my head thanks to the adjustable pulley 😂.

Awesome job repurposing an item👏. You might make adjustments with a few stitches if you're handy. I won't tell anyone about your bonnet, if you don't tell anyone I sleep with my robe! 🤪🤣

Ooohh I love this quote about using money you haven’t earned to buy things you don’t need to impress people you don’t like. I've heard it first in the movie Fight Club, but I believe it's Robert Quillen's

I made a challenge for myself to not buy from Amazon. Small business and family-owned is where I wish to spend my money. I have a list of items I need, like socks and underwear. I wasted money on Amazon getting socks I hate. No more. I have to see, feel and use cash for my purchases this year. When you see your money, it makes it more real. I don't pay interest on anything! Tired of Amazon. I have learned convenience is not always better. P.S. I bought some underwear this week, and they are perfect. I will wait till I find the socks I like.

Quite a while ago, I realized that when looking at clothes in a store, I am almost ALWAYS attracted to something and if I think about it, have something in the same color and or style at home! It makes me laugh each time I stop to look at something and realize it! 👗👚👠

We are trying out a new system for stopping the impulse buying thing that's been going on for far too long. Every time we want something we put it on a list and once a month we will hold a "wish list decision making meeting". Then we talk about which things are actual needs and which things just wanted but wanted enough to budget for it etc. Quite some things get scratched out already even before the "meeting".😊 We'll see how this goes long term. We just started at the beginning of this year.

I think my problem is buying gifts for others. I was going to a friends house yesterday and they have 3 kids, it was also her birthday. So, birthday flowers, gift, money and gift for each of the kids, then something for my partner (who would have been upset I spent so much on others), then my son some cars, then finally a cream for myself as Id bought for everyone else. It feels lovely giving buy I feel so guilty looking at receipts later. Any suggestions

I never thought about the "when", but it makes an excellent point. I am currently living in two homes, my parents house an in a dorm while taking part in further education. And I sometimes can´t figure out, where to put my belongings or my "new needs". Usually I decide to not buy the things, because they don´t fit either way. It doesn´t make sense to keep them at my parents house, when I stay at the dorm and the other way round.
