I have been trying to continue studying English since the last 3 years and still do. And one of the things I really recommend to everyone is to listen to Bob's Short English Lessons channel videos over and over again. In fact, I run the playlist over and over again while doing whatever, while running, while working out, when driving to work, when I have some free time at work, etc. I've listened to the entire playlist over five times and my goal is to listen to it at least sixteen times. A patient of mine who was an English teacher a few years ago told me that our brains need to be exposed to a new word at least sixteen times before we can remember and use it. So I said to myself, let me listen to Bob's short English lessons as long as I can and I'm on it.

In addition, education in China is more focused on watching and reading, so many times we cannot understand the speeches of native speakers. Your video never fails to amaze me, Bob. I used to translate English in my mind while reading and listening when I was beginner and intermediate level. That sort of exhausted me while I remained at same level for quite long. But someday I found out that my brain ceased translation and started to think in English as my level progressed. And it also amazes me that I have adopted your recommendations and been practicing them unknowingly.

1. Overloading (reading and listening simultaneously) 2. Do long listening 3. Force description (talking to yourself to describe anything with all the vocabularies you know) 4. Shadowing (listening, pause the audio then saying it outloudly) 5. Visualization (when you learn a new word in English try to picture that word in your mind) 6. Get an English only dictionary 7. Repetition (doing or hearing things over and over again)

I have a personal teacher. We've been in touch for many years with some short breaks. I haven't been able to speak and listen without tranlation until recently. Several days ago I watched a video from a non-native speaker and she recommended to keep everything in English, so I decided to do the same with my teacher. I said to him. Let's keep all our lesson i English and since that time we've been doing it in this way. After second lesson, I mean after our deal about keeping our lesson just in English, I realized I can think in English without translation. I can discribe it perfectly because it's new for me. It's not about great pronunciation, grammer, connected speech not even about searching words. It's about the translation. If you need to translate every single word you get exhausted very soon. However, if you manage to untranslate English to your native lenguage, you can invest more time in the other imporatan things. You can listen to yourself, focus on grammer, tenses and other things. You can postpone it to a higher level. The most important thing for me is to be in tuch with English for a longer period of time. It takes some time than you switch in that lenguage. I need about 10 minutes to be switched in English. When you get in this state, you have to keep it. Don't switch between English and your native lenguage because you will never get in that state. If you wanna put some vocabulary down with translation, do it at the end. Highlight that expressions and at the end to write them down with translation. You still need to get it from translation by using but it doesn't disturb the thinking in English because it's at the end. Reading is one of the best ways how to get in thinking in English. It helps me. Watching movies is a great way, too. You get so many expression for 1,5 or 2 hours and often refresh your old vocabulary. It's constant activity, that is important in this case. In my opinion it's better to read twice a week for one hour than to read 10 minutes every day. It's not enough time to switch in that lenguage. I don't wanna give you bad advices, you can study English for 10 minutes a day but you need more constant activity. For example to study English every day for 10 minutes but twice a week to read for more than 60 minutes and watch one movie. I belive this method could be beneficial.
@LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear it went well with your personal English teacher. Sometimes simply committing to only speak English can be the key to making it to the next level in your English learning. Awesome!
