It’s my 15 weeks old puppy’s third day with me, I’m moving on the 9th he lives in a studio with me for a few days. And he loves his crate but just is terrified when he doesn’t see me. But this video gives me so much hope that it’s mainly because he just “lost” his family and that it CAN be trained. As of right now, even when I reward calm behavior the second I leave his sight he cries

I breed Spoodles. I do ENS with them. I socialise them from about 4 weeks old, in my car, in a puppy pram to new streets with more traffic, smells, noises. We go to other family members places with dogs, friends places with other puppies, they go to my groomers at 4 and 8 weeks old. I don’t send them to their new families until at least 9 weeks old, I find that extra week really helps their independence. They go with a blanket with their littermate and Mum’s scent on it and a favourite toy. My new puppies families are amazed at how confident and easy they settle in. If you start with a good foundation you set your puppy up for success Thank you for your videos, from 🇦🇺

Can hear the little fella dreaming. I’ll do this for three days, then off to the laundry for a couple days, then finally, in the living room. Wish me luck!

Hi, I have found your videos so helpful which training my dog, and would love a video on stopping dog whining during a walk. Ever since my dog was a puppy he has whined excessively while on a walk. I cannot tell if it's due to excitement or anxiety (he's also a puller, which we are working on). He will sometimes literally whine so much on walks that it almost turns into a howl. He is not being injured or in pain in any way from his gear (we have literally tried all different types of leads and harnesses, etc. and talked to his vet to be sure it's not something physical). It can be difficult walking him for this reason, and we have tried a few strategies with little to no success. Most of the advice I got when he was younger and I would bring it up to people was that he would grow out of it over time as he learned to walk better on the leash (which was not helpful advice, obviously). He is now a year and a half. I would love to see a training video of strategies to use in a situation such as that as I have not found many resources for this type of behavior. Thanks for your consideration!

On the first night, I put my puppy in the worst place in my house. Which is the laundry room located outside the house. She cried all night because it was cold, dark, and lonely. The next night, I put her in the initial place she would sleep every night; my living room. Also, I planned to sleep on my couch bed a few nights until she was fully potty trained. So, my living room is cozy, not lonely, or dark. Basically, she was grateful that she wasn't going to end up in the laundry room, so she never cried at night and slept through the night. My puppy is now 10 weeks old and now sleeps in her crate with the door open. She has never cried at night ever since her first night. I say relax, and she knows she has to go in her crate and not come out. Never have I ever hit her to teach her things. I just followed all the recommendations I learned from you. Oh, my pup is a Cane Corso mix Great Dane. She is super intelligent 😍 Because my Mocha looks like Mable, I decided to watch all your videos so that I could raise my dog like yours though i wasn't expecting that turn of events. I'm sorry for bringing old memories back. I truly am. My intention is to share with you how your videos have helped me raise my dog, and my appreciation for that. Thank you for what you do. God bless 😇

We have a 3 year old dog that we’ve spoilt by letting him sleep in the bed, have free roam of the house, all the food and toys he could want, etc. We have a 6 month old baby now and starting to do some real training. Tried leaving him downstairs in the crate but he was crying all night. Fine if I sleep down there with him. I think we’re going to try moving his crate upstairs for a while and do the approach where we start moving him away slowly. Thanks for this video. I really want to be able to keep him and train him well around the baby.

All of my pups in the past, I have given them a bed with a scent blanket from mum, thrown some puppy pads down and left them until morning if they cry they cry it gets better quickly. I remove pads so after a couple weeks only one remains and by then they are more or less able to go all night without the toilet mess in the morning. I get the idea of the crates but they mean you have to get up on the hour all through the night to let them out as they are locked in the thing and will get stressed if they have to go to the toilet in the crate. Many people are not able to let their dogs out every hour throughout the night until they are old enough to hold on until morning. My missus wants to try the crate but I don’t see the point changing what has worked for us all our lives.

We are currently trying to get our new 10 week old puppy to settle in her crate for naps during the day and at night. Will crying in her crate not make her have a negative association with her crate and end up hating it? Thats the one thing that worries me about leaving her to cry it out in her crate. 90% of the time she cries for a couple of mins and then settles down, which is awesome. Its that 10% where shes really bad that I dont want to give in and let her out but also dont want to teach her that her crate is a bad place!

@shader26

Ours is now 4 months old. We’ve had her for 2 1/2 months. We did go through the crying and whining at night period. We would go out when she was between barks/crying and not say anything, go out and sit a little ways away from her, not comforting but just she saw we were there (one at a time obviously, it was usually me) and then one night...we slept through the night all of us. This went on for a few weeks. We were so glad. Suddenly two nights ago she is back to square one. We tried letting her bark herself out, but she simply doesn’t. She winds herself up, gets so frantic that even when I finally come out (again waiting for a pause in the action) after hours she won’t calm down. Is this anxiety? Why now? We are at wits end. I feel that also she is so bonded with my wife, her actions seem to point to its not enough to have me there, she NEEDS to get into the bedroom where my wife is sleeping (since she usually takes the day shift with the puppy...) and is totally focused on that. What can we do.

@@PippiOnePointOh hey, i think its like breaking a code. It lasted a while. We had a ritual, where i would gave her some treets she lover when it was her bedtime. It became a ritual we still do. But some things that helped, moving away from her caged area, but with the tv on, sitting or laying on the couch, which is out of sight but she can hear I’m there. Later on she started getting used to it, and now needs her alone time in her area. Just don’t give up, and it will pass I think. We also were better before about putting her in her area for small periods at first then up to an hour or so during the day when we saw she was tired. We had a camera there, so we could gauge when to either just say “go lie down” or if it was time to let her out before she got anxious. Also I spent time with her in her cage area playing, doing games with treats, play with toys, and hiding treats around there and letting her find them. In her actual cage (we always leave the door of that open) would hide treats in the bedding. It all helped. Our dog is still hyper vigilant.but getting better. We did find out, trial and error and reviewing the camera footage when we left her alone (very seldom, covid dog, we need to do more) that we simply still cannot keep her in her cage area when we are away. She gets so frantic she can hurt herself. She gets like manic, panicked, has dangerously hopped over her fence, we didn’t think possible. But then we found out, she is perfectly content as long as she has the run of the house when we are away. Lays by the front door, sleeps, or if we are away a while, goes and lies on the couch. We decided not to push that. Every now and then she gives a bark or two early in the morning now, but it’s really only when she has to pee. If we didn’t insure she did enough before putting her to bed for the night. Good luck, I remember it feeling like it would never work out, but it does.

@@shader26 thank you SO MUCH for responding to me, even after all this time. I am definitely going to keep trying and implement some of the things you mentioned. It’s kind of strange because most people in the comments for these puppy videos say that their dog is calm as long as they can see their people. Indiana (my pup) is totally opposite; he goes berserk if he’s in his crate and he can see me nearby. If I’m out of eyeshot, he still barks, but it’s not as frenzied. It’s hard though because, as much as I’d love to let him have the run of the house while I’m gone, I absolutely do not trust him to stay out of trouble. At his age, he’s still chewing on things he shouldn’t and getting into all sorts of mischief, and that’s with me in the house! I will keep at it, though. I just needed some assurance that someday it will get better.

We have s x 13 week old sproodle littermates. Finding I am very overwhelmed. We crate them separately at night. They have swept all night for several nights but are now barking again. We have been getting up x 1 at night to take them out. They are tired from 5.30pm so are resting from then until we crate them around 9.00pm. They are waking 4.00/5.00am. If they slept to 6.00am we would be happy. They sleep on a bed together during the day. Should I be separating them more during the day? We train them separately and together.

Hi Will, do you think these techniques would work with an older dog? I'm adopting a 10 year old dog and I want her to sleep in the spare bedroom where my dog has his bed and sleeps. I personally don't like dogs in my own bedroom or on my bed. The problem is, the new dog is very attached to her owner and has always slept in her bedroom, all be it in her own bed. I have known this dog all it's life and walk her most days as her owner is elderly, so it's not like she is a stranger to our home or family. But I still worry that she's going to kick off big time if not allowed to sleep in my bedroom. What do you think would be the best approach here?

Mitzy is doing well, she will be 12 in a couple of months and she did settle in with me very nicely. It was difficult at first for her to adjust, but we stuck with it. I put an item of clothing from her owner into her bed for comfort, and that definitely seemed to help. She was quite unsettled for a few nights, so I just reassured her that she wasn't alone once or twice throughout the night Now she trots off to her bedroom with my dog every night, and they both look like a right spoilt pair with their very own room.

So I have a new puppy and I’m just curious is this only to be applied for sleeping or would it be beneficial to put him in his crate once or twice during the day to play or whatever the case may be to familiarize him with it so he knows it’s a safe place not a bad place or punishment?

Third night with puppy, daughter stayed downstairs first night, second my son and we put him in his little room in kitchen but my son brought him in living room in night as he was crying. Third night im staying downstairs with puppy. He is in his room with a gate and been crying for half hour. I feel so evil and trying not to cave. I hope he settles down soon. Im thinking should i have shut the door so he is not stimulated from seeing outside into the kitchen. I dont want to go to him to shut the door to spark him back off. Hes been quiet for about 30 seconds while im typing so hopefully im having a break through. I hope this works and im not coursing him anxiety. I have had dogs befor but my last dog was 11 years ago and i have no clue what the heck i did in the first few weeks to help him settle lol. Omg hes finally being quiet. 1 minute now.. He has his bed some toys a Teddy and puppy pads if he needs to do his business. Fingers crossed the night goes well 🤞. Oh he's started again... We have sat in the room with him to get him to like this room and left it open so he can go freely to the room when and if he wants... Hes quiet again. Will just see what happens. Thank you for this video. Going to try get comfy on the couch. Im right next to his room as i cant relax leaving him in thereand going to bed. Maybe tomorrow if all goes well i will shut the door next time think that would have bern a better idea idk.

Curious about how you progressed. I brought home an 11 week old XL bully last week. Similarly he was really chilled out for a few days. Barely barked ever, very calm and didn't whine much. @@stephenhughes4 most of it is boredom it seems for my dog is she really want to be next to me and part of the pack, keeping the crate close and gradually moving it further is working and also a command word for the whining cause my dog doesnt get tired of barking or whining... one challenge I've ran into is trying to make the crate not seem like a bad thing.. toys, small games of hide and seek with the treats, has kind of curbed it a bit... but I see exercise is and playtime before night really does the trick for my dog she's out every night if I don't miss that time

May I ask why we can't take the second approach and simply let them always sleep in our room? In their own bed, not ours, but in the same room. I'm genuinely curious and wanting to understand the reasoning behind it. I've been really interested in dog behaviour and training recently, wanting to have one of my own one day, but I can't comprehend why we have to push them away completely out of sight during the night.

@@turbo_nerd86 Oh, I'd never thought about that. My cats always sleep with me, so it feels so cruel to not even allow a dog to be around half of the house. But if that really doesn't make them sad (as I realise they have different behaviours than cats, and certainly don't think or feel like us), then I feel a little more relieved. I suppose a good solution would be to have more than one so they could keep each other company. Thank you so much for answering!

She gets up in the night to ask to go out which is very good I know but now she has started jumping up at the side of the bed and when I take her our she doesn't do anything. I agreed with you up until the point you said " you can keep them next to your bed for a few nights, don't let them on your bed though" (something along those lines) I understand your very experienced, but what is a dog if you can't cuddle it at night? What is a dog if you don't let it snuggle on your couch or bed? It's not a true companion if you don't let you dog sleep with you. Obviously I fully agree with your actions, in fact I will probably ignore the dog when is whines. But when it's potty trained, I will want it sleeping with me. Of course it'll have its own crate, it can sleep wherever.

@@proft7211 depends on how you look at it, it can be very beneficial to the dog to be taught to be independent especially with sleeping arrangements, sometimes things happen in life and a sudden change in a dog's routine (like sleeping with its owner) can be very stressful for them, it's nice to snuggle with your dog but it has it's disadvantages for the dog itself but for some especially family homes that are very social where the dog has many different people they feel comfortable with then it's less of an issue but for say a single person who then gets into a relationship might find the dog can struggle to accept to new situation so there are many things to consider but I personally think teaching a dog to be independent will be a bigger benefit to the dog but it's totally a personal choice.

There are much better ways and videos on how to do this without breaking their spirits. A crate, if used, should have happy, calm and stress free associations. And you can do this over time, and let a new dog or puppy sleep peacefully with you at the start. If you can’t take at least some days off work and dedicate this time to settling in a dog or puppy in their new home with you, then don’t adopt a dog yet.

So not necessary. Rediculous. But then again the British raise their human babies like this. Very fond of their Victorian style. I like this channel for many training tips for difficult challenges but for the youngest pupps he sounds just like Cezar Milan. I guess men just dont understand that dogs just like humans grow up eventually and if you let them and don't baby them as the grow beyond that, they'll have other needs, preferences by nature. My dogs alway had free access. Regardless of breed and age. They all grew out of being needy at night and some chose to put themselves to bed early in another space than mine (to not be disturbed/awoken by me). All of them liked a morning snuggle in bed, bc that's where they started efter leaving 5-9 littermates, mom and sometimes cousins, etc. They grew out of it. Naturally.
