I need to do this again. I'm down to like 50,000 rounds already.

I vacuum seal the ammo boxes, then place them in military cans. Labels on outside. I try not to open cans until I’m ready.

I've been buying ammo since the early to mid-1990s. Much of the ammo I bought back then was made in the 80s and they still work like they were new. I'm very meticulous about my ammo storage and that likely plays a role, but don't believe that ammo only lasts a decade I keep mine in military 50 and 30 cal cans with good seals. I put silica gel dessicants and I make sure it's not exposed to fluctuations in temperature. THAT is what kills your ammo. The final enemy of ammo is WATER. Make sure your ammo stays dry.

For sure. I moved out, more liKen escaped from, New York earlier this year and I'm finally shooting a lot more than I ever have. I'm currently going through a case of 1986 Malaysian 55gr 556. Works like it's new factory ammo I would suggest that people don't forget what happened here in 2020/21. When (if it does) the price becomes bearable, buy a couple boxes more than what you use at the range or put what didn't get shot at the range and store it as if you did. When you're older like myself, you'll be glad you did. I've been able to help many friends who couldn't find ammo anyhere. I've got nearly 60 ammo cans, mostly metal, but I've got a dozen of those tan plastic ones you can get from Cabellas, Bass or Scheels. With plastic, it is VERY important to realize that ammo is heavy, so when you lift by the handle, the sides can flex and air can get in. Water, too, if they're not stacked correctly. That's why I buy them in a four pack with the heavy molded "sled" for a base. Plastic is an option if you can't find or afford the metal ones.

Why are people obsessed with stocking ammo?

10 years?! I'm still shooting WW2 surplus 1942/1943 head-stamped .303 British. I've never had a problem with ammo "going bad". Run a dehumidifier and or a central air conditioner in your basement so it doesn't reek like a barn or storm cellar with mildew funk galore.
