Here at Chorbie we care of all things around your home. Including trees! David shows us a simple way to keep those baby trees strong and healthy.
We often don't think too much about our small trees. But as they get older its easy for them to start to sway to a side. Most small trees have stakes one at each side, and this usually helps in maintaining a strong straight tree. However with wind, and climate change, the tree may need more support.
David shows us just how easy it is to install another stake to make a leaning tree straight again. Some things to note would be in which direction is the tree leaning. From there, place the stake on the opposite side. Afterwards, it would just be a matter of checking on your tree from time to time and adjust as needed.

A necessary tutorial, but as others asked, more info would be nice ... at the end -- what kind of straps, where on the tree as a whole were they placed - we couldn't see from the quick visuals, how many straps total. Thanks

If you're talking about the stake, it's a standard metal t-post!

This is on of the rare videos where nobody shoots a screw or lag into the tree, thank you. Can you recommend anything for soil amendment? An apple tree here in PNW has tilted over during wind due to loamy soil. I figure i need to add topsoil and a little sharp sand to the excavated area and tamp it after i have the tree staked, how do you respond? Finally, do you have an alternative recommendation for t posts? I am trying to avoid buying a driver and having to lever them back out, but if its the only way...

Great questions! We generally recommend that any backfill be composed of the native soil amended with compost, we usually do about 1 part compost to 5 parts native soil. On staking, an alternative system is widely available and can be little easier to remove, when the stakes are no longer needed the wires are simply cut at the soil line. www.arborist.com/category/10742/Duckbill-Earth-Anchors.html

What are you using to toe the tree to the stakes?

We use a material called Arbortie! It's a light green webbing made specifically for this purpose!

Hey Heidi! In soft soil we have successfully used a variation of this type of system: www.landscapedepot.ie/product/deadman-rootball-anchor-system/ In essence, we dig a large, deep trench and bury a "deadman" horizontally. Then cover it with soil. This can generally hold even in sandy soil. We hope this helps!

how long do you typically leave the straps all attached?

We make the call based on the tree's stability, as opposed to its age. A good test is to observe how easily it moves when shaken and if it is growing straight. The more stable the tree is, the safer it is to remove the straps.

I have some young trees that are starting to lean. I have tried tying them down and that just makes them crooked where I attach them to the trees. Is there a method to use a 'guide' post to keep the trees straight as they mature?

In most cases, our preferred practice is to loosely tie the tree, as movement is great for strengthening trees.

so I just bought a house and it had these stakes on the tree it was so tight on the tree that it made a huge hole where the wire was would. would it be best to take off steaks completely will my tree regrow the top half of the tree or will it die no circulation? its placed exactly were u placed the steaks on the tree I'm just curious

It is possible that the damage could be too severe. If it's a serious hole, we recommend sending some pictures to a local arborist. If it's not too severe, we recommend just moving the straps up or down the tree a little bit. If you look close enough at 38 secs, you can see the markings from this tree having a similar issue. We just made a separate video to talk specifically about it. This tree has been thriving since moving the straps.

Good point! Immediately, it may look the same, but overtime, it will assist the tree in growing in the proper direction!
