Beautiful rant...finally from a person people listen to, about steel box luggage systems. The key comment is the how the department of transports in each and every country should regulate width modifications etc. I think this particular video covers the subject of luggage..and how it relates to safety and injury ultimately...how it relates "directly" to accidents and handling characteristics etc. The comment about customizing luggage systems being the only way, again....an astute comment. The refreshing absent luggage racks...utilizing the sub frame and existing attach points already in place, and forgiving straps. This video is ground breaking...hopefully getting through to those doing it all wrong....for their own good. Before seeing his example of the fella falling into the boat, I knew it was coming.

I very much agree with the low weight and mass centralisation set up but I have yet to see any you tube bike person show how real world things can be carried. I've done a bit of desert crossing in Marocco and every time you drop the bike that is half a litre of water you need to replensih the effort of picking it up. Unless you are a riding god like Riemann , you will need much more than 4 litres of water and then there is the food. I have medical needs so I need much more just to be safe. Its nice to see the absolute perfect set up that Alan is showing us but real life adds much more to that, especially away from people, in hot environments.

Great knowledge thanks for sharing mate we just got our 2020 Tenere 700 today to share, my old man got back from his bone scan (just got diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer) bike got delivered today while he was at hospital face lights up when he got home an dived right on it to sit on an was grinning ear to ear. Right suprise for him an he's over the moon. I used to use the metal panniers for the camera gear on the 1150gsa but after watching your vids they are on the shelf an the 1150 unfortunately will be finding a new home. I think you are really right I know a few peeps who broke legs with hard cases, just in the process of looking at backpacks to carry the 1d an the 70-200mm l is. I started doing motortrips 6 years ago. Glad I made the right decision the first time I bought a bag: a 50 litre 'croissant' roll-top bag from 21brothers which fits over the saddle like a glove. No metal racks needed, I even removed the standard luggage rack on the back last year. Lightweight, loads of space and when it's full you can always stuff a few cans of beer in it!

it's true....many people who go for less than a week carry too much weight...even then, your bound to be somewhere near civilization to purchase a few necessaries on almost every trip....except in Aussie land. Absolutely agree with you on the scaffolding and metal box pannier systems. Dangerous !! Not only from a size point of view but also from rider dropping scenerio(much prefer to be under soft bag than metal) It seems to me that most guys running hard luggage actually have nothing in them most of the time !! I run a 1250 gs rallye and 701 enduro. I try to run light. Mostly 1 or 2 soft bags and a camel bladder and no scaffolding !! . It makes for a much more enjoyable ride !!

Have to say, work in the harbor within Rotterdam, and use steel panniers on my bike for a very simple reason: when I arrive I have to bring a lot of shit with me, and simply able to throw steel toed boots, swimming vest, helmet etc in a dry steel box is just very convenient and fast. That being said, mine don’t stick out past the handle bars. For camping, indeed a whole different story.

Agree on the steel pannier thing. I have a set for the Tiger 1200. Bought them, primarily on the re-sale of the bike. Their heavy enough, even before you put any shit in them. Unlikely, they'll ever be used, by me anyway.

Recommend the Alpinestars Halo Jacket. Great ventilation with removable sleeves which keep the armour in place. Bit wierd with the offset front zipper but you get used to it and it allows for a front pouch and massive vent. The lower pockets are mounted at the sides rather than in front of you which allows greater freedom of movement. For some reason I couldn't get any Alpinstars pants to fit me properly and they felt very restrictive so went with another brand..

Really cool of Akrapovic to set you up with a full titanium setup like that. I run a small setup of two 14L rackless saddlebags with a 30L bag on a top rack on my dual sport. I keep my toolkit, spare tubes, and a small, lightweight foot pump in that bag, and I leave the extra capacity mostly empty to keep it low-profile and centered. Good as "just in case" space for along the way.

My Himalayan gets loaded up like a mule. Soft panniers and tank bag. But I don’t try and launch over logs as im a 47yo newbie and just love the dirt tracks. Your skills are FAR beyond my reach. I’m Happy exploring at a MUCH slower pace. Love ya vids 👍🏼

I have very similar setup on my world raid. I went for light engine bars thou, this allows for another small bag of gear down low, and I added the B&B rear rack…. Not only for securing my rear back but gives a grab rail which is handy when I drop the bike… nearly 50 now , it all helps 😂

I have a top box and use pelican cases that dont stick out beyond handlebars. I'm not a pro rider and dont have 15 sponsors to pay for my stuff or my travels. I dont drive 80 mph across forest roads or BDR trails but do enjoy my setup. I'm not failing into any boats yet but maybe tomorrow, who knows.

Good tight setup Adam. I use very small sw motech slc side frames which double as grab handles and carry small soft bags. Years ago I tried hard alloy panniers and only used them twice. Hated them and when leaving a ferry I clashed with my mates panniers and nearly took each other out. When I got home from the trip I took them off and got rid. Used soft bags ever since then and never really had an issue other than a bit of movement. You should always check you load and retension or adjust anyway. That system is exhaust porn mate! Wish I could afford it for my world raid. Will probably go the budget route with some black widow headers and can along with a rapid bike EVO piggyback ecu as getting it mapped is OK but it's only correct in that point in time when it's on the rollers. If I want to change something down the line I need to get it mapped again. The EVO is self learning so you scan swap parts and not worry.

I do have (smaller) hard panniers for my t7, but they’re only used for highway and city riding when I need my gear to be locked up for security reasons. And I run 17/19” wheels with touring tires for that. For off road riding I’ve been using the Mosko Moto R40 bags. They. Are. Amazing. But you definitely pay for them.

Going as hard, fast and extreme as you totally agree, but what if you just want to cruise along camp out half the time and take your time a bit more gear has to be taken. Yeah soft panniers are the way to go.

I have a similar setup on my World Raid but with Kriega OS 18s and Os base. Adam, out of curiosity, Tenere owners tend to stick Barkbusters first thing they do, are you happy with stock guards for now?

I think you just convinved me to not go the pannier rack route and instead get the kriega 18L OS set up for my Norden. They sit more horizontal to clear the higer pipe, but will be much skinnier.

i would be interested in what camera gear youre bringing with yourself on long journeys and especially how you pack the drone. because i guess it would feel pretty uncomfortable to have all your camera gear and drone in a soft bag and even in the slightest crash the drone and camera gear is dead. also if youre capturing a lot of footage you probably need several batteries for the gopros and the drone which would also add a lot of weight right?

I would be interested to see how you would setup luggage on an ADV bike for 2-up riding for some mild to moderate off-road. Obviously, you would not being doing anything too gnarly with a passenger onboard. The rackless luggage usually doesn't allow for 2-up riding, forcing the use of racks to carry luggage.
