In this video I will show you how to remove the old paint from your gas tank and get it ready for a new paint job. I will also show you tools needed for the job
Tools used:
Aircraft remover
Paint can
Nylon bristle brushes
Plastic paint scrappers
Degreaser spray
Wire brushes
Shop towles
Rubber gloves

thanks for the video man. do you think it will go through a factory paint job ? my tank has been painted over the original paint. I can see the original paint wasn't even sanded before application of the new one. I'd like to remove the new paint but try and conserve the original one, what do you think ?

Awesome video-I'm getting ready to strip my tank but I want to leave it with the bare metal look like yours ended up looking. What do I need to put on the bare metal to stop it from rusting? Also, can I strip the tank with it still on the bike if I cover everything else up Thanks

You know, Im not sure what you would put on a bare tank surface to keep it from rusting. My tank didn't get any rust while it sat bare for over a year., just on the inside where there was liquid and moisture. I would say just clean and polish the metal tank and just keep it dry. It's ok to get wet as long as you dont let it sit. if you haven't seen it yet i have a newer video on how to restore the inside of the tank and soon ill have a new video up on how to paint a tank.

I tried Aircraft and Josco and nothing. Didn't soften the paint very much. Couldn't even remove it with a steel scrapper. Harley factory paint is a beast.

Dude same story here. Hilarious how Harley paint scratches if you stare at it for too long but the second you actually want it gone it decides to identify as M1 Abrams armor plate 😂😂😂

I had good results with the aerosol applicator. No need for brushes, easier to reach tight corners and a more even distribution overall. great vid though.

When I worked at a GM dealership the owners son was going to custom paint my HD for $150 if I stripped and sanded the sheet metal. That aircraft paint stripper did nothing more than make it look like I just waxed my tank. Would not even touch it. The toughest paint I've ever come across. It was miserable sanding that off.

So, I'm just very curious but can you sand a gas tank fine without taking it off or emptying it? I can't find anything on it I just want to know if there's a reason other than not getting everything if I don't take the tank fully off. Anyone know if it'll be fine sanding it whilst still on the bike?

You could sand it while it's on the bike and full of gas sure. But what are you doing to the tank? Just a touch up spot or full paint job? What? It would only take 5 minutes to remove and drain the tank and do your job proper. If it's just a touch up spot that you want to repair I'd say you could get it done on or off the tank. Personally I'd just remove it and drain it. Quick and easy to do and gas is dangerous so just keep it away from your work space entirely. Plus I can do a better job sanding and painting with the tank off of the bike and dont see the sence in taking a short cut on such an easy task. Plus with it remove you take away the risk of damaging or painting other parts of your bike.

You could do that but I think it might be too aggressive and you risk damaging the metal. If youre in the states aircraft remover is pretty affordable and at like every home depot.

If you want to keep a tank bare metal than you just leave it alone and itll get a cool patina over time. If you want to keep a nice shiney metal look then just wax and polish will take care of that

I used the Aircraft stripper and after three applications it still left most of the paint on the tank. I think this is because the stuff they sell in California sucks!

+limey canadian looks like there is something similar made by canadian tire but if all else fails i know you can find it on amazon. I get mine at a local auto shop store. Maybe a local auto shop near you can help.

@@DD-co1zn iv used aircraft remover in the past before the EU banned it. Closest we have now is paint panther, its not a strong but still works

You could but I wouldnt recommend it. Aircraft remover is strong stuff. It will eat away any powder coating on the frame or any other paint or finish it gets on.

Ok maybe i did it wrong. But i have used 2 whole cans of aircraft remover and only the clear coat is coming off. Apply a coat. Wait 15 mins. Scrape. Nothing but yellowing clear coat coming. Off. Not sure if its just the heat or not. (Doing this outisde in 91 degree weather. But this shit sucks ass lol.

1. Purchase large air-tight Tupperware container. 2. Put tank in container. 3. Fill with acetone until submerged. 4. Wait one week. Flip tank periodically. 5. Re-prime and paint.

I think the information in this video would have been great, but I couldn't hear what was being said due to some of the most ridiculous music I've ever heard on a KZbin video for a long time. Why do we need music anyway and the sound of the Chicken squawking on top of the music completely diverted my attention and made it necessary to hit the stop button before it drove me totally mad!!
