I've found that thick household bleach, even the cheapest variety strips chrome. I put the parts into a sealable tray that cuts down the fumes, cover the parts with the bleach and leave overnight. Using rubber gloves to protect your skin lift the cleaned parts and rinse under running water. The leftover bleach can be stored in a specially marked bottle kept well away from kids for re-use.

I've heard of people using Brake Fluid, too. You can even use a good degreasing dishwashing liquid. It will take longer - maybe 2 weeks...but it can work. I think that's what Super Clean is - automotive degreaser, so it's got the same central ingredient. I use gloves with it.

The only thing i have ever used brake fluid on was to remove paint from kits. I am assuming instead of using break fluid the Super Clean should take acrylic paint of also and a lot safer. Going to have to try it out.

I use Super Clean myself - it's fantastic. SOME parts can require more time or even agitation or brushing. I get it at Advance Auto parts stores. They have it next to Purple Power, which is also popular for removing the aluminum from chromed parts.

Recently i had a model build where I wanted to pain the front chrome grill black. So. I decanted some Rust-Oleum flat gray primer 2X and airbrushed the part. It worked like a charm. Great adhesion. And it was primed all at the same time. Stripping chrome is just one more step in model making that can be avoided.

Chrome is really hard and virtually nothing will stick to it. That might not matter for a model, but for a car grille it matters greatly because the grille is always under attack from road grit and other nasties.

Nice technique! 👍🙂 In all honesty I can't understand why model manufacturers still even bother chroming these parts at all. Just about every model show/contest I've been to for well over 20 years now modelers (usually car modelers) both young and old strip it and airbrush some chrome-like metalizer in it's place.

With Super Clean and Purple Power, make sure to wear gloves as the fluids are so strong they will strip the oils from unprotected skin and one would end up with cracked skin for several days afterwards. Also, do not pour Super Clean or Purple Power into aluminum containers as both will slowly eat their way through. Always use plastic containers instead. Be safe! :)

Conk- got a Ford Transit and doing a de-chrome project; black on white. On the rear is the name/model #. I removed the '250' but want to de-chrome the TRANSIT. Know anything that will work. Remember, whatever it is it's durable enough to survive outdoors. Simple bleach won't work nor Clorox Bleach Gel. Plasti-Dip'd some parts but if I do the name on the rear door I'm sure it'll come right off after the first swipe of a brush wash. Know a chemical that will work?

It is also a great paint stripper. Got a started but not finished Tamiya Missouri that had thick brushed-on paint on the hull, so I dunked it for a few minutes in Super Clean and it softened the paint to a mud-like consistency. It could then be brushed/wiped off or rinsed with water.
