If you don’t know Humble, he’s a Canadian spoken word artist and music video creator. His poetry is so powerful, even Apple used it on their commercials.
He opened up with me on this episode about how being from s Sikh background, and the racism he’s faced has both hurt and helped him in life.
He also discusses some of the problems artists today face and how they can overcome them.
I really have to say that this is a powerful episode. You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate it. His knowledge and insights are important to anyone who is on the road to greatness, and anyone who wants to be a leader.
So get ready to learn all about the power of words, in Episode 682.

Humble The Poet great interview and I am always proud to see fellow Indians doing so well. But just want to comment on something - If the word ‘Sikh’ means ‘to learn’ it must have been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘seek’ which also means ‘to learn’ which by the way is the same in English too as they belong to the same family of languages. So you would think that it is pronounced as ‘seek’ not ‘sick’ although when used as a verb as in ‘sik-tha’ it might be pronounced as ‘sick’.

I'm so inspired by your story because I'm also am a spoken word poet on the come up, right now I'm at 104 subscribers. I written a book called Young With A Purpose and it's $9.99 on Amazon. I know spoken word is my calling but I'm still wrestling with the fear of being a starving artist. Your story gives me hope. Here's the link to my book www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1983352853/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1534804649&sr=8-1.

Paused on several parts to take some time to chew on some thoughts. Currently running into the same messages (decorated in different words) that speak to my soul. This was great! Thank you for pointing the flashlight to things that were already there but just needed some light shed onto them.

Take aways: Dont run from discomfort , Enjoy the rainbow, not the pot of gold, and when your good you have to tell ppl, when your great ppl tell you! And lastly being in constant competition with myself is the ONLY reason i push forward everyday. If i cant say that im better then yesterday then today is a waist of my life and time. Always strive to be and do better!

Humble should have gave credit to Will Smith on that quote. Will Smith had a viral video about that topic. That was the exact phrase Will Smith used.

Acharich speaks i liked that quote as well, i have never thought of it like that before. kinda makes me think of responsibility in a better light now. there are many things that we dread doing because we feel like the responsibility should be on someone else for numerous reasons, mainly because we feel the issue is not our fault. but in the end we cant control the things that happen, only the way react to them. and taking responsibility for the things that are not our own fault is a great reaction to practice :)

Dont give up girl, you'll find it. listening to a bunch of artist, they all go threw this process. just recognize that you wont be in it for long. keep pushing forward and it will come to you. just give it some time and keep creating. Feeling lost/broke is all apart of the creativity space. its how we come up with our best stuff :) best of luck to you!

Dear Lewis, I heard you say in a different video that you were welcoming any feedback from anyone. So here's mine : I think you're an angel who incarnated to this earth to help us grow. Also, I think that the Mask of Masculinity should be translated in French (as well as any other languages really) as it is much needed here in France. I think that we, women, should not regard ourselves as real women until we've read this book. Because how can we be supportive of our men if we have no idea how they work? Similarly, how can you take care of your car if you don't know how it works and what it needs? Just beating your car up for not taking you where you want to go won't cut it! This man that once was around me could turn so aggressive and hurtful with intent that I had come to think of him as "abject". Yes. I'm guilty of this. But, after viewing a video where you told your story behind the book, my whole outlook, my whole world even changed in a moment. Suddenly my deaf ears had cleared up and I was able to hear his cry for help. Suddenly I felt able to respond from a place of love instead of a place of hurt. Suddenly I had become a real woman. Thank you for this. With love.

The struggle is so real. I have watched my son struggle as an artist, leave college to pursue his music career in LA and come home after fove years and telling me and dad how shady the industry is. We already knew this...as I was a vocalist for years, but he had to find this out on his own. Yes, my son said exactly what you said, " I'm going to buy my mom....". So now....thanks to stepdad..he has a dream job without giving up his dream. He gets to work in the industry he is comfortable, knowledgeable and with one with...and gets paid to be creative with the number one tech firm in the world! I have shared all of Humble the Poet's videos with him as well as this.

What an inspiring chat! Would have been great to hear more details about how as an artist, he was able to make an income. What were some of the steps he took to monetize his craft? How does he actually make money -- that was the biggest question on my mind the entire time. Seemed like a missed opportunity but hopefully you'll have him on again since yall are friends!

Good interview. Up to the point where he blamed Trump for the current polarized situation. That's pretty short sighted. I saw the exact same thing begin and fester under Obama. And it's hardly one-sided either. A lot of Trump voters previously also voted for Obama. I don't think anyone can deny race relations were worse after Obama's presidency than before, and it's precisely because of a lot of that polarization and identity politics that Trump got elected in the first place.

Why the antipathy towards “God”. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God helps those who helps themselves. Instead it speaks to those who can’t. And... “You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” Deuteronomy 8:17
