you know those plastic containers you buy baked goods in at the grocery store? The ones that are clear with a lid that is hinged and snaps shut? They are great for setting your peat pots inside of for mini greenhouses. You can use as many as you have saved and grow all one type of seed in each one. Neat stuff. Got an old Venetian blind you were going to throw away? Cut up those individual blinds and use them for seed markers!

Great video! I'm just starting out and found this very helpful. I specifically liked when you described issues you'll see from using wrong "soil," as in soil versus starter (plus the differences between the two), or what happens when over watering or watering from the top versus from bottom. Those were issues I had seen last season and it's nice to know that there's a fix for them. Thank you!

I use leafs to start(save some money)😉 I take the old dry leaves and crumble them then I add boiling water let sit for 30 min then squeeze it out when it cools ,then fill when its not hot works just fine....if you go regular soil do the boiling water trick when it cools mash the soil to blocks..then plant.. 👋 keep planting

Thank you for taking the time to explain so clearly how those different tray systems worked, and why you liked or didn't like them. Something you didn't mention that I wondered about: two of the tray systems you demonstrated had fairly large holes in bottoms of the container that hold the soil. What do you put on the bottom so the soil does not fall through? Also, thanks for the ideas of alternate food containers that you could use for planting seeds, too.

Wow. Awesome video. Thank you for putting this together. I'm impressed! One thing I am wondering is how you clean the capillary mat? Does that also go in the dishwasher? Thanks again!
@GardeningProductsReview5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Dan, I'm so glad you liked it :-) For the capillary mat, I hand wash it in the kitchen sink with some dish soap. You'll need to rub it together to get the fines out. Don't worry if it still looks dirty - it should work for a few seasons before it gets too clogged with fine particles to be able to wick up water.

Have you tested different brands of heat mats? I've gone through about 4 ohuhu mats within a months time. They seem to stop working after a few weeks. I've read similar reviews by people who've tried Vivosun. I'd like to buy some mats that I can use for many seasons without having to replace due to the mats not heating up. Any suggestions for better quality brands that have worked well for you?

I started seeds in peat starters and the pots got soggy and the soil packed in too tight. I tried again and no growing light so they got really leggy. This weekend I started another tray with the seed starting mix in the watering tray . I put seeds and mix in small toilet paper pots I made and put these on the soil in tray to germinate. I didn’t buy another peat pot tray for it. Can I save the seeds that are planted 3 days ago?

Hi Marcia - We've since gotten a mic :-) Good idea to overwinter annuals - it gets so expensive if you have to buy them every year! I have a bunch of gorgeous coleus plants that I've overwintered and propagated (more plants for free!) - they're about to go back out in the garden soon.

@GardeningProductsReview5 жыл бұрын
Probably not every day - just when the surface starts to get dry. If there's still water in the tray, don't add more. When there's no water left, add more.
@jimmycanada18536 жыл бұрын
If you are using the 72 count seed tray, you can cut them apart into 6 each, then just one tray up to water from the bottom. That way you are picking up weight and take a chance of mix coming out.

I've been watering my seedlings with a mister on top. I have my seeds in clay pots covered by saran wrap. I lift off the wrap a couple of times a day and mist the soil. Seems to work. A bit labor-intensive but it seems to work fine. Do you think i will have bad results?
@robertshorthill41533 жыл бұрын
The expense of all that plastic is unnecessary. The problem is one needed tons of storage space otherwise the trays get damaged, broken, useless and tossed in the trash to end up in a landfill somewhere near you. I know, I tried various plastic systems for several years. I now germinate seeds in newspaper cylinders. I use 2/3rd potting mix, 1/3rd starter soil to fill each cylinder. After they are sprouted, they go under grow lights for about 14 hours, with a rest of about 10 hours with lights off. When their first true leaves are well formed, they go into bigger pots of potting mix, a bit of commercial compost, and a bit of miracle grow fertilizer mixed in as well with the soil mixture. I use a shallow metal tray to keep water in to water from the holes in my newly transplanted pots. I've used red Solo cups with great success, but this season I'm using those 24 oz cottage cheese containers that end up on the landfill if they can not be recycled, which they can't in my locale. I have neighbors save me theirs of they don't grow stuff in them. Over the winter one can accumulate several. In my case, dozens and with neighbors supplying me theirs, I have several dozens. Almost more than I have use for. But if I sell a tomato or 5 they are gone from me. Maybe the buyers will get the idea to save me theirs in the future if I ask them. More dozens! I can store them easily in a very small space and use them in the next potting season. I just object to all the plastic crap made in this world today that does so much environmental damage all over the planet and to ocean life. And these companies that sell this junk are making 50 to 80 times what it costs to make
@robertshorthill41533 жыл бұрын
My paper cylinders will have a date seeded and what varieties they are. When they go into larger pots I can either use old plastic window blinds had at my local Habitat for Humanity store for a few dollars or even cheaper, a cut piece of yellow masking tape with all information stuck to the cup or cottage cheese containers. That lets me know what I'm planting when the time comes and for people to know if I sell some. No expense, reused trash, nothing in the landfill to pollute the planet that isn't biodegradable. Cheers, my happy grower friends. Leave all that big box hyped crap alone. It's really unnecessary -- maybe not this year, if you are just starting seeds, but plan for a cheaper, better way for next year. 😃😊😀🍅🍅🍅
