In this video Dave shows you how to fix stripped screws in wood with Super Glue, Crazy Glue, CA or Cyanoacrylate. Stripped screws in wood often happen in door hinges because of the constant pressure on the hinge. Dave will be using Bob Smith Industries water thin super glue, Baking Soda, and Bob Smith accelerator to perform this task. If you have any questions please leave them in the comments section I promise we will answer them or even make another video to answer your question.

Thanks guys, a great video and a useful DIY hack. I think you may be onto something - a CA glue revolution, especially with those of us who've used CA glue previously with mixed success. Your videos are not only highlighting the basic chemistry of CA glue, but how the glue can be used effectively with different materials, and with different fillers and/or catalysts. In addition to your CA hacks, I'm looking forward to seeing some of your inventions and projects. Cheers from New Zealand.

Awesome. Intend to start using these methods. Perhaps a video about best practices to store the CA glue between uses would be helpful, so that more than a micro quantity can be safely purchased at a time. (In the past when I've bought "Super Glue" for conventional use, the tiny tubes have gone hard, even though capped.) Much appreciated.

Great instructions David and John. Being in the commercial door business for over fifty years, stripped screws in wood doors was a big problem. Using regular wood glue and toothpicks worked pretty well, but this CA method is instantaneous and permanent. One suggestion, put the screw back in like you did, but on the last rotation add a dose then continue to drive it home. Wonder if the next bloak years from now, replacing the hinge will know why the screw will not come out.
@ianshand6094
@ianshand6094 9 күн бұрын
It should come out, the screw will just be very tight to remove. The CA glue goes off instantly, before the screw even goes back in, so it's not creating a permanent bond with the screw itself. While this may seem counter-intuitive, when I try David's trick, I might be inclined to run some candle wax on the screw threads before screwing the screw back in. The screw shouldn't loosen off with wax on the threads, as the screw hole is now, effectively, reinforced with a wood, baking soda, CA glue matrix, and that's what's providing the holding power. I'm inclined to do this because I'm likely to be that "next bloke" (again) you're referring to, and I'd rather not swap one issue (a loose screw) with another issue (a stripped screw head and lots of swearing).

Great tip, thanks! If for any reason the hinge needs to be removed, is that still possible? Any trick to get the metal to metal bond at the screw head to let go? (Yes, many times a door can be removed by knocking up the hinge pin, but sometimes not possible and sometimes perhaps some other reason to remove the hinge from the frame.). Just curious if this process is ever remotely possible to reverse.
@ianshand6094
@ianshand6094 9 күн бұрын
If I understand what David is doing, there shouldn't be any metal on metal bonding, as the CA glue goes off immediately due to the baking soda catalysing the CA glue. The CA glue will be set before you even screw the screw back in. Per a previous comment made, I'd be inclined to run some candle wax over the screw threads before screwing the screw back in though. This isn't to prevent metal on metal bonding, but to make it easier to unscrew the screw again. David's method is likely to make a very strong and tight screw hole. He's, effectively, retapping the internal thread of the screw hole when he screws the screw back in.

The weight of the door is not the issue as the hinge is sitting in a mortise in the door jamb absorbing the weight of the door. The CA trick is fine however a piece of 12 ga copper wire inserted into the stripped hole works well. An old timers finish carpenter trick.

With the stripped screws can the screws still be easily unscrewed and screwed back in after this baking soda trick? Most of the time I’d like to think that I can still remove my door hinge if I need to paint or etc

That was just like looking in the back of my garage with all the tube and other poles in the way. Ultra thin ca is not so common so have never used it before. Would a glass dropper be any good for sucking up the baking powder. Another Question. Is cement ok to use.

Really, this guy is working in his worshop and if something doesnˋt work he first asks himself if superglue might be the answer. And now he shows us all the times the answer was yes. Thans for that! I was not using superglue for a long time as the glue hrdened even if stored in the fridge. But, well, I guess itˋs comming back to the workshop. And I gonna implement his way of thinking 😂

Thank you for your comment and question, my technique works perfectly in both side-grain and end-grain. Simply run the screw all the way in, remove it, flood the new threads with water-thin cyanoacrylate, spray on some accelerator and run the screw back in, it will not fail! Mmm… I was okay with the general direction this was going to the point where baking soda was used as a filler. Now we have a hack rather than a repair. I would recommend removing the hinge plate from the hinge mortise, drill out the stripped hole, plug the hole with fresh wood (use CA if you like), fold the hinge plate back, re-drill a pilot hole and then revert to your earlier advice in using ca in the hole before driving the screw. It’s never a good idea to substitute another material in a repair it makes a further repair (if required) an absolute nightmare. I see this in traditional boats that come in for repair all the time. And the reason screws jack-out especially on external doors is due to the repeated thermal expansion and contraction of the screw in the whole combined with the swing of the door. It’s the same in engineering and why loctite is deployed- CA providing the equivalent here.
