Yeah I agree sometimes it's nice to take out a longboard and just enjoy the moment. I catch my self turning into a dog when I ride my short board chasing anything I can get

Try this too. Say you want to ride a 6.0 but are on an 8.0 . Borrow a 5.5 for a couple sessions and struggle through it. Then step up to the 6.0 and viola so stable and floaty the feel will now be.

I have absolutely no one to talk about this since none of my friends surf and honestly don’t like talking to random surfers on the beach but holy shit catching waves is so hard. I skate, snowboard but holy shit surfing is a whole nother game. I’m starting out on a short board cause I wanna slash and turn, but holy fuck I either pop up too early or pop up too late, wipe out, then have to paddle back out and then I’m all tired out getting crashed at by oncoming mini waves

Thanks a lot, it was very helpful! I moved from longboards down to a 6.4 fish, which I find easier to paddle than a proper short board as it has more buoyancy and less rocker and helps get used to the feeling of shorter boards.

I am new to short board and learnt on longboard. I have seen the chicken wing technique on short boards with the hands on the rails to support the balance of the board while standing. Your technique looks great. As a beginner on short board. Is it easier to use your technique rather than the chicken wing?

Nice video! I currently ride an 8’8 longboard, and want to step down to a short board. Is it worthwhile to try a mid-length first (somewhere around 7’ - 7’6) , get used to that, then go shorter? Or do you think the progression would be faster going straight to the 6’ or shorter range. For reference, I am 5’7 around 145. Thanks!

Great question! Yes that is the right thing to do. I'm going to make a video about that as well. The example boards I recommend are exactly that 7 and 7' 6!

Thank you! I tried exactly that, a 7’6 board for a few sessions and I found myself able to adjust really quickly. I’m currently down to a 6’4 board looking to go down to 5’7ish soon. I found that the best way to go down in size, is to just send it! Try that shorter board for a session or two and see if you can make the adjustment. I was exhausted paddling out on the shorter board, but by the third session, I was getting in much better condition. I pearled a TON trying to paddle into my first couple of ways on the shorter board, but was able to adjust.

Hi when I tried to used shorter board, I can’t maintain balance when lying on it and affect my paddling too (the energy doesn’t pass to the board)). Also, the last couple of stroke for wave should I lower my upper body like more closer to the board? (Thats what I do for longer board to catch wave, when I applied it on shorter board the nose will sink)
@dukehong7491
@dukehong7491 2 жыл бұрын
When you're paddling for a wave, your back should be flatter with weight up front so your nose is just barely out of the water, the whole time. The key is to have your hands in the right weight balance to drop down the face. Good luck!
@xisotopex
@xisotopex Жыл бұрын
its important to realize that its never too small to shortboard.... dont take out the longboard cause its "too small"... also, when you surf a longboard, its easy to surf the board rather than the wave, due to all that floatation and planing area, so on a shortboard you have to really learn how to use the wave for speed, and make sure your positioning is good...

When it comes to paddle strength, I think doing pull ups would be a much more effective and faster way to build on it. The paddle band training seems to ditto a straight arm lat pull down which is really only effective in building strength if you have enough resistance. Considering this, why would you still suggest your paddle band movement?
@HydroMind
@HydroMind 3 жыл бұрын
It simulates the paddle stroke much more closely. Pull ups don't work triceps and it's hard to get into the endurance rep range of 25+
@sagarnadasia8648
@sagarnadasia8648 3 жыл бұрын
Hydro Mind Why would you need to work triceps for paddling, since it is a pull motions you should only need to workout your back and biceps?
@HydroMind
@HydroMind 3 жыл бұрын
@@sagarnadasia8648 It's a static hold to keep your arm straight against the resistance of the water.
@benjaminprominck4867
@benjaminprominck4867 3 жыл бұрын
@@sagarnadasia8648 if the palms of your hand were facing upward it would be a pull motion. since your palms are facing downward in the water it's actually more of a push motion (pushing the water back in order to move forward). Have you ever actually surfed? because if you have you would notice how much you actually use your triceps to propel yourself forward. i don't understand how biceps have anything to with paddling. side note: by doing back workouts you indirectly work your biceps based on the pull movement...
@sagarnadasia8648
@sagarnadasia8648 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminprominck4867 It’s actually close to 50/50 push and pull, when your arm is static and in front of you, you are using your back/lats, but once your forearm is perpendicular to your body, it becomes a push motion using your tricep/shoulder. I just had to think about it more, my bad.

Hey that's great! A general answer...Look for something under 6'0 with a lot of volume, especially near the "chest" of the board for paddling and stability. Specific board: check out the Firewire Baked potato 5'7" ish. I hope that helps!

You’re ready for a short board when you master the long board. When you can catch waves before they break, and paddle fast.
@xisotopex
@xisotopex Жыл бұрын
you can surf a shortboard without EVER having set foot on a longbboard. its absolutely not necessary. there is nothing special about catching waves before they break when you are on a floating sidewalk. its not that big a deal. and just cause you can paddle a longboard fast, yeah, you are not going to be able to paddle a 6' 30 liter board like that.

Nah. Id rather have a moron coming at my dome slow as hell on a performance board he cant control than a 20 mph log he cant control. Even then, you have room to hit a 2-paddle takeoff on a partially visible bump, cobra pose for 10 seconds and still popup before the lip forms. If they want to be forced to learn actual wave-placement and paddle fundamentals, they should never even look at a longboard
