A friend of mine who I used to skateboard along in my youth (and who always also surfed) keeps challenging me to drop from bigger waves when I didn't even dropped from the smaller ones yet! It becomes especially frightening when the only experience you have with those bigger waves are massive slams! Firstly, I gotta learn how to take off in smaller waves (which I haven't just yet), and then think about the bigger ones... Otherwise I'd just get traumatized!

@@rafaelmarangoni I can tell you from experience, you are correct. Gets many repetitions in on small waves that you can successfully ride.

@@KalesBroccoli love the videos man. I'm also very keen on Greg's suggestion. I'm predominately riding backside at my local breaks and have a dodgy trailing knee. When it gets heavy I'm concerned the wave will land on me and it might give way leading to further injury. As a result i often shoot myself forward or break through the back prematurely...would love some insight on that!

Your board (or others' board) is the most dangerous thing when surfing. 30 years surfing, my board broke my nose with an edge rebound directly onto my face. Could have been worse, but, as you say, if you're not in hurry (competing or such), it's always good to protect head and face with your arms and take some seconds under before poping out to the surface. Great vids, always sensible and good to watch.

About the hesitation section I agree in general but in this case the message should be to turn immediately in small steep waves with a big board. I have been in the same situation.

I recently picked up surfing as I moved to Sydney from Europe and your videos have been very helpful. One thing I would like to hear more about is duck dive. What is the proper technique and also, how big a board you can actually duck dive. As a beginner surfer I have been riding a high volume 7.6 fun board. With a lot of effort I can practically duck dive that board but sometimes it just goes horribly wrong and needless to say, paddling out in bigger wave conditions can be a real challenge... yet I don't think I am ready to move to a shorter, lower volume board.

Good vid to have, take it from me, even after 25 years surfing last year I wiped out in a barrel and my board hit me in my head, breaking my jaw into 4 bits needing a lot of surgery, worst of all it knocked me out, next thing I remember is being in knee high water with my mate who rescued me. Short story, always surf with a a mate!!. Took a couple of surfs to get my confidence back, but fully back and stoked now. A good question is the best way to fall in a barrel or step bowly section? Cheers bro

Can you make a video on foot positioning specifically on a short board, such as where your back foot should be while pumping (ex on the tail pad or off of it) and how and when to shift your feet while surfing a wave cause I know your supposed to shift your feet forward while surfing a smaller wave, so you don’t apply too much weight to the back of the board and bog it down but I just want to know how much further forward you should put that back foot because sometimes I want to go for a turn on a small wave but I find my back foot is just too far off the tail pad and then I don’t have time, to quickly put my foot back and hit a section; essentially I just want to know where the sweet spot is usually, on a short board for pumping, so this would be incredibly helpful if you could go over that..please?🙏🏽!

I fell pretty much exactly like you were showing in the examples at 2:30 but the water was so shallow my lower back got slammed into sand and it's injured pretty bad. I wasn't even that close to shore it was just quite shallow and I guess I had so much force. I tried to spread my arms a bit to disperse the downward force but still hit real hard. Is there anything I could have done different or it this sometimes unavoidable?

Hey kale, I always end up hitting my board when I wipeout in a barrel.... How can I prevent that???

Jump forward or backward to get out the way of the board - you need t penetrate the water to get out of the way

Please bring awareness to the mistake unexperienced people make by putting themselves in front of another surfer as a clean up set rolls thru😵 I had some guy paddling like a demon for the shoulder when he needed to square up to the already broken wave and duck dive or perhaps bail his board away from another surfers if he is uncapable of duck diving a wave.I yelled out to this fellar 3 times prior to him being slammed into me, getting his leash around my neck and his board to my back and either his knee or elbow punturing the underside of my board😵👎 I felt so lucky I escaped unscathed, but it could have been sooo much worse.I latter realised he'd damaged my board so 2 days out and the cost of a pretty hefty ding was on me😖🤬😤 I believe the guy was way outta his depth and petrified of the approaching wave, that he totally disregarded my position.I saw this happen in my head before, this actually happened.Then he tells me "I could see you all along", so why tha fk do you endanger me like that???? Surfing is dangerous enough without these kooks endangering us any more😖👎 This message is perhaps futile😢 The culture of surfing has dissolved quite drastically...Perhaps the pro's and big brands can play a role in educating the masses entering the water & swarming lineups everywhere, whether they have earned a place in the lineup or not🤷‍♂️The vibe in the water is not good.Guy's don't call out and demonstrate any sportmanship, but instead snake people without consideration or understanding the dangers their creating.Whimperings from a remote Indonesian atoll😔✌️

Awesome guys! Just a quick question, when falling off your board in white water/waves which are shallow, does the same rule of falling off to the side of your board apply even if it is shallow water?🤙
@HowtoRip

Yes, belly flop or backflop generally apply :)

At 10:06 you say Zara nose-dived because she's taken the wrong line, but wouldn't she have been ok on that line if she'd popped up without the hesitation? Looks to me like her having too much weight on the front of the board and the hesitation/fear are the reasons for the nose dive. I find footage of 'how not to do it' very helpful.

Her line was definitely makeable, like you said. But there are two major things wrong with it: 1. Taking off straight is much more difficult than taking off down the line on a longer board (any late takeoff, which this was, on a longer board simply must be taken at a "45-ish degree angle" to the wave followed by some nifty rail work). The nose WANTS to pearl and requires virtually all of your weight to be way back on the tail during the drop. But the more important thing is 2. Taking off straight (more so RIDING straight) is wayyyy less fun and way slower than zipping down the line. It looks like he kind of pushed her in on that line to be honest so it's not really her fault! Watching videos of pro longboarders every now and then and analyzing how they takeoff is also really helpful. Being on larger equipment requires a lot of techniques to be exaggerated and easy to spot. And old school longboarding is just cool.

Longer board makes it super difficult - her weight distribution was fine especially if she took off on an angle

@@BN47 Thanks. That's interesting. I've only just started on unbroken waves and have ridden a few on a long foamie just going straight. That's why it confuses me. But I now realise that that "success" has been when I've caught the wave earlier. As you say, it's a late take off in the video
@KalesBroccoli

yeah that comes into plat a little bit too. But taking off on an angle is slightly more advanced.
