I've been subscribed to a channel called "The Lore Lodge," and they talk a lot about native American history and folklore, including stories of skinwalkers. Skinwalkers are essentially humans who, through some form of ritual, gain powerful abilities. What these abilities are varies widely, depending on who is recounting the story. From what I've heard, it ranges from merely gaining the traits of animals (like a bear's strength or a wolf's sense of smell), to full on shape shifting capabilities. They DO NOT actually steal your skin. They simply kill you and use their shape-shifting capabilities to mimic you. Most stories describe skinwalkers as being intelligent and sadistic. A few signs of skinwalker presence or signs that someone is a skinwalker are foul odor, uncharacteristic mannerisms (such as your super bubbly extroverted friend being unusually quiet, or maybe using different speech patterns), or said friend disappearing inexplicably only to reappear in the same inexplicable manner. Oh, also pay attention to whenever all the wildlife, like birds and small animals, suddenly go quiet. Whenever the woods go silent, it denotes the presence of something dangerous (like a mountain lion, bear, or... skinwalker. Animals just naturally shut up whenever there's a predator around). In order to survive a skinwalker there's two options, evade it or defend yourself. To evade a skinwalker is difficult, since some stories describe them as being able to run fast enough to stay parallel with cars. My best advice is to not panic, and find either a vehicle or a sturdy structure. If you can get to a vehicle, drive to a heavily populated area. If you are successful in evading it, DO NOT TELL ANBODY about what happened to you. Simply talking about skinwalkers is said to attract them, and since you've already encountered one once, that skinwalker is familiar with you and liable to target you again. As for fighting skinwalkers, this is a bit more complicated. I'm not completely certain about the details, but from what I remember, white ash is their weakness. Get any kind of sharp object (like a machete or knife) and coat it with white ash. You should be able to stab and kill them like that just fine. I think fire/burning them also works, so if you happen to own a flamethrower (which is completely legal in the US, I love this country), try that. If you do manage to either kill or incapacitate a skinwalker, cut off its head and burn the corpse for good measure. Oh, and even though regular weapons won't kill it, you can still injure it to slow it down and make evasion easier. Shoot out it's kneecaps and then get to your car, or something.

I know I shouldn't be watching this video as a Navajo but its Plan3 so I can't resist. The skinwalker monster is called yee naaldlooshii and comes from Navajo mythology. Based on the scary stories my grandparents told me they only stalk you in the day in the animal form. But at night is when they snatch you up. If you dont have a prayer done for your home its basically inviting them into your home. You can kill them in their animal form but the form they choose is usually fast. In their human form they are invincible and its hard to kill them. Also skinwalkers arent disfigured creatures they're just evil people with the power of magic. Love the video tho.

Native Americans are also commonly known as and referred to as Plains Indians so that might be where the mistake came from, but I do agree. There is a big difference and it does matter

Wikipedia page for the specific nation skinwalkers came from does refer to it as an Indian reservation, because that’s what the American government calls it I think. So, a particularly stupid mistake. I would expect them to address this though, because it’s just so, so dumb. Like, c’mon, guys…

0:04 , skin-walkers do not originate from Indian folklore, they originate from Navajo (a native american culture) folklore. We do know what a skin-walker is, it is basically an evil witch who can turn into animals/pretend to be animals. They use their magic for self gain at the expense of others, and work in direct opposition to medicine men. There is nothing in Navajo belief as far as i know that suggests a skin-walker could/would disguise itself as a normal person, outside of it's witch form. However it has been suggested that they could also possess (like a ghost) living animals and people, controlling them temporarily. In most stories it is usually very very difficult to win against a skin walker, as usually its a beast with the mind of an evil human, that also posseses evil magic. It takes someone clever and strong enough to outwit and overcome the witch. Stories often either end in a close victory from either party, or a hard fought stalemate.

I think the mistake probably comes from the Wikipedia page for the najavo nation, that refers to it as an Indian reservation because… America, I guess. Still a dumb mistake, but at least they probably weren’t trying to be racist.

5:20 it doesn’t make sense for Steven to be the skin walker, because what about that scene? The hitchhiker could’ve been the second body, because closer to the beginning when they went to get the keys, Ryan/skinwalker wasn’t there and the window was open, so the skinwalker could’ve been looking for another body to replace, aka the hitchhiker.

Its cus of the whole Christopher Columbus really wanting to find a way to India and in a lot of official government paperwork they are refered to as Indians as many residents of reservations are more well-acquainted with that term instead of Native Americans (CGP Grey did a great video bout it!!)
