Excellent advice. One thing to add: people who commit character assassination attempts usually have a habit of using that perverse tactic. So one easy way to counterattack is by finding other victims, previous and current, and take down the assassin together. And another thing: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PERSON! Character assassins are cowards. They will often work behind the scenes, using other people to do the dirty work for them. Make sure you know who the real instigator is.

I withstood a character assassination campaign from two underperforming female subordinates at work. I survived, but I had to invoke legal counsel and internal grievance process to defend myself. HR was all female and unmoved by my complaints about the unrelenting character attacks. I eventually retired as planned a few years after, but there was a black cloud over my head from the months of vicious falsities used against me. I did not have the benefit of supportive family or friends around me at the time, but I plowed forward undeterred from my mission to bring these employees up to speed or get rid of them. They were mildly disciplined but they survived my tenure. I was later promoted and transferred, but it was a hell of an ordeal.

I've had similar experiences. Some people object to those who do not compromise. Consequently, I document and maintain a mental leaderboard of the worst actions by those around me. Once, a superior levelled accusations of an impropriety made by a group member. I laughed derisively and produced a photograph of the person asleep at work, and suggested they were asleep and couldn't have seen anything. After their termination, I called my group together. I advised them that they should ignore rumors and work. Another one stole company property to which I had almost exclusive access. Surveillance cameras led to their dismissal. I called the group together, again, and advised them that if anyone was tempted to engage in this behavior, they should occupy their time by outworking their peers and leading their own group. I had no further difficulties. Do as I have done. If you find a better method of mitigating threats, I'm eager to hear of it.

I would define character assassination as an individual pointing out flaws in someone, which exist and are real, and use these characteristics of your personality to humiliate and destroy you in front of others. I’ve had this done to me several times and it’s not easy to fight against. Unless of course in a professional setting ignoring it, and the person responsible, is often the best method to deal with it. The individual responsible will soon tire as they aren’t getting the reaction they hoped for and do something else.

I have had numerous character assassinations from my school years right into my work life but one which was the worst was an incident in high school where I had gotten into an argument with someone who was spreading rumours about me behind my back, I went to confront him and it got to the point where he decided to run for it and he had a couple of girls that came to his defence without any understanding of the situation other than that they hated me for some reason as I had never met them prior to this. I told them to stay out of it as it was none of their business but they instead decided to stick their noses into it but they also decided to crowd around me to block access to the guy who I was confronting and I decided just to walk around them. Their leader then jumped in front of me and bumped into me and fell back. She later screamed that I had assaulted her and immediately everyone came to her aid and started to pile on me. I later had to endure the character assassination that took place after where everyone had either believed her story that I had attacked her or numerous new rumours like 'how I like to rough women up ' to 'push them around' and that I was a thug. It wasn't the first time that happened and sadly not the last time either.

*Psychologically* speaking it makes sense that you will always be attacked more if you give in. It's usually *not the actual person that is being attacked for what was done, but functions as a stand in to project things onto them and then attack those.* In the case of that feminist *she is probably attacking those abusive boyfriends of her mom after she projects them on other men.* *It's the need to lash out because of previous trauma, not about the thing you're actually being accused of and are apologizing for.* Because of that need they are alway in search of a target. Rolling over means you've just made yourself a more attractive target to lash out against.

I had a group of friends at the time, but not a lot of people that I had known for very long time. I also had the disadvantage of having a very mercurial personality at the time, which isn't exactly an asset in situations like these I could perhaps have relied more on my friends and tried to reach out more to people I knew from when I was younger, but I felt so shitty at the time that it didn't even seem like an option. I had tons of other stuff I was worried about also Looking back its pretty clear how I could have altered my behavior to make it much more tolerable

I also listened to Molyneux interview you mentioned. That was nothing to what I experienced. Im super outspoken on social issues and in particular anything to do with gender related issues. The upshot? I literally ended up in gaol [only for one week] after one of my co-workers trumped up an assault charge against me. Her evidence was strengthened by other gender confused supporters who also hated my guts....:) It cost me my job plus 80K in legal fees to clear my name which was made easier given the fact that I was the third person she had used this tactic on. The end result left me jobless and broke, bloodied but unbowed and more vocal than ever....lol. Eventually the weaklings who attacked me turned on each other but that was after heaps of damage was done to myself. I was even approached by a national magazine to do a story on my case because of its level of weirdness and injustice. My advice to anyone reading this is to make sure you can handle major blow back from gangs of mentally weak people before you push an unpopular [factual] agenda. Surviving character assassination: I failed twice (in my 50s). Both were the result of substantive differences. Both failures were the results of my personality: 1. People expect me to be strong and protect them. When I needed their help, the notion that I could protect myself provided them with the rationale not to jump in. Or they might of figured that if the attacker was strong enough to pummel me, they had no chance. 2. Both came after an injury that subjected me to extended periods of chronic pain that chewed up so much time and psychological energy that my friendship networks had badly weakened. The first was disillusioning and the second psychologically devastating, lasting months. Some of that was let down from the emotional involvement, but the bigger part was disappointment in people I expected better from. Both are relevant for social media today, although the first was before social media and the second only peripherally involved social media as the subject of the disputed policies. In addition to my character being shaped during childhood and during political and professional battles during college and grad school, many of my formative experiences relative to social media occurred in 1990s and early 2000s dealing with trolls and other miscreants, especially during en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September (originally called "Black September", alluding to a terrorist group). I saw many Usenet groups collapse under the assault, but more importantly, some survived because they were strong communities and had strong, trusted leaders who could *count on support* from community members. I had the advantage of being able to learn how to deal with online character assassination when the attacks were small and contained to a few hundreds or thousands people, with limited leakage from one aspect of your life into others. I have friends who have distinctly different personal and professional names -- not the simple variants that the search engines know to equate. But I was too early to the Internet for that. ----- *In my first failure,* it was a case of despite having a strong instincts to fight, recognizing it would be futile,. I was the president of one of the largest, most active neighborhood associations in the city and was widely mentioned as a strong candidate for Council, and I was actively exploring a run. A developer who was connected to another candidate took out a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against me alleging the potential for violence, meaning that the TRO was granted at a hearing before I was even informed. The actual hearing was 6 weeks later, but they withdrew the application the night before (thereby canceling the TRO). But the hearing postponements allowed the local daily paper -- which backed my opponents -- to run multiple front page stories pushing their narrative. The regional newspaper followed that narrative. The local weekly -- yes this is a 3 newspaper city -- presented some of my side, but largely ignored my witnesses and the many factual and logical errors in the TRO application. *So what support did I get?* Lots of "We know you didn't do it" paired with advice to not fight because I (not "we") couldn't beat that newspaper and the opposition (which was the local political establishment). In politics, when people believe you can't win, you can't. So I didn't run. I have since worked on local campaigns, including lending my experience to those candidates. I'm a blogger on local politics, providing arguments and phasing for other to adapt for themselves and in providing one of the "impressions" (marketing term) needed to get an idea registering with people. My meager consolation is that a decade later my accuser was arrested on multiple counts of financial fraud and arms trafficking (sniper scopes...). *WTF:* A few weeks later, an Assistant DA running to become DA came asking for my endorsement, but his attitude about what had happened to me was "The system worked." He didn't get my endorsement. *Q: Why at TRO?* Because a TRO falls outside strong state laws against SLAPP suits (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation). It is inexpensive to file, and there are rarely penalties for losing, and even then, they are minimal ($1-2,000 according to my lawyer) and far less than the expense of preparing to defend against the claims. As with character assassination, it is easy to make a claim, expensive to refute it. ----- *The second failure* was in a volunteer organization to which I had given 19 years, including over a decade as VP and president and then back to being a board member. I endured 10 months of character assassination by three of the board members. Two wanted the organization to exit a function that they opposed but that membership polling had found to be important. The third was partially that and partially seeking power. The Board passed a motion declaring me guilty of multiple major and minor ethical violations, although the evidence was fraudulent. *How did they get a solid majority?* There were some on the board who had only very limited interests and were unwilling to even discuss/consider the evidence, either before or during the meeting. My sense was that they saw the best way to get the issue to go away was to vote with those that had been making charges. What is called today *"Feelings over Facts".* I think I also detected an attitude of some that *"Accusation is Proof"* (a key component of successful character assassination). There was at least one board member who acknowledged that the evidence was false, but had the attitude that there must be *some* good reason that they were attacking me -- "we are all good people" -- and that it was up to me to "solve" the situation. She refused to recognize that the 3 were openly striving to subvert a policy that had been reaffirmed by a board vote only 2 months prior. I resigned. Partly it was a forced resignation: Having been declared guilty of serious misconduct, I felt I could not remain on the board. But also, I was unwilling to be part of an organization that made decisions that way. (There are a plethora of famous quotes about such situations) In the aftermath of my resignation, two board members who had been carrying major loads "transitioned out" of the organization.

The other time it was a very similar situation, a lady wanted to get an office room assignment with her friend, so she accused me of being a racist. I ultimately prevailed in this case, but it was super uncomfortable. I was stressed out every minute of it. I didn't even know what had happened and why I was being ostracized until a company wide email came out, clearing me of any wrongdoing.

So smart and so beautiful! A rare 'full package'! :) Your disambiguation of the character assassination tactics is spot on, I've come to the exact same realizations some years ago. And just like you emphasized - the most important thing is not to budge, not to apologize for being who you are, for being honest and using facts in your thinking and your actions. Doing so will only make you look weak and a hypocrite and ultimately the very person your attacker is trying to portray you as. Although I do believe there's a number of actions you can take to defend yourself without asking for help from outside people of credibility. Mainly, it's simply reversing the attack and using the same tactics against the person that is attacking you. And since your attacker doesn't have a firm ground to stand on like you do, eventually they will feel scared and back off. Of course, this probably won't work against sociopaths and egomaniacs but it's worth a shot if you know the person you're dealing with very well.

Thank you for this and your channel!!! Seriously...just moved to Seattle from Phoenix and never have I lived in a city where character assassination is such a high priority in people who don't share my views (maybe it's in more liberal states, but I also used to live in CO and never encountered it to the extent it is here). A few weeks ago I was at a brewery for a school social and some girl brought up the extreme tensions between Americans to which I replied I didn't understand because we should all be able to hold different view points and still respect each other. She immediately called me out as a Trump supporter (so because I'm talking about respecting people liberals know I'm a conservative...tell me again how intolerant we are haha). She walked away but her partner sat there for the next half hour shoving her liberal agenda down my throat, and in the attempt to "be tolerant" and "open-minded" I sat there and listened. I thought that would satisfy them, but now I'm being excluded from social events with the school group because now everyone knows that I'm a supporter of the president. So, basically I'm just saying thank you because hearing you talk about this makes me feel like I'm not alone in dealing with these issues. Finding your channel and knowing another conservative lives in this wretched state was like a kid finding out Santa Clause actually exists!

Great video! I don't know why I dont watch you more often. My general approach to character assassination is either responding in turn if the culprit has obvious 'misdeeds'. Or ignoring them completely and bolstering the points they tried to attack me on - such that if they call me out as a racist, I will demonstrate how I am anything but (without apologizing or directly responding to them). I am a uni student, so I have to be careful with what I say and do - and I work in a legal firm which means I have to be even more careful. I generally try to avoid posting off people with more power than me for the time being.

I really like your straightforward approach to this issue. My experience with such matters involves family court .... and happened many years ago. I had a judge .... read me the riot act... about what a terrible person that I must be. I kept putting my hand up ...and kept asking ...may I speak ? When I was finally allowed to speak .... I observed that the judge had not read my file and that the proceedings indicated that this was a case of " extreme prejudice " ..........I was basically saying that the judge was full of shit ! The courtroom hushed .... what was going to happen ! The judge called for a lunch time recess...... On returning to the courtroom that afternoon ... the judge called me to the stand ! "tell me your story" he said ....I did .... and all our issues were resolved that afternoon ....in his courtroom. That was the proudest moment in my life !

Its difficult for me being disabled my folks or family are probably my worst critics as well as my best advocates. I am bombarded by people telling me that I am lazy, I have a horrible work ethic, I am incompetent etc... These family members that say these things are people that I do not even talk to on a daily basis. You have no idea or maybe you do just how painful it is but the way that I deal with it is that I just brush it off like its nothing or I confront the person that said it. In most cases it doesn't do a whole lot but leaves me with information and dignity.

You also must punish a false attack harshly and relentlessly to make the cost to the attacker higher than the cost you had to bear defending yourself.

After an acquaintance dumped me as a "friend" after the election, I was really worried about what she told our other friends (because she was psycho and always trying to paint herself in a better light). I thought I was going to lose all of my friends, especially my best friend of ten years. Thankfully, none of that happened, but it's a genuine fear, especially when you spend your life trying to build up your integrity and reputation as a decent person.

You are articulate, well educated and can think for yourself. I am amazed that you could do this on the left coast. I enjoy listening to you, not so much with what you say, but the age you are saying this with.

I am lucky to have a skill that is high in demand. I will always be able to get a job. I also think having an informed argument helps. Case in point, I was bombarded at work by a whole shift when trump banned transgenders from the military. They were all smugly asking me if I thought he was a bigot now? Knowing the criteria that gets everyone else booted from serving and asking why they should be any different shut down the argument fast.

Wonderfully said. I am a firm believer that the truth will out but what is vital is that one stand their ground. If one is innocent & the attacks are unfounded it's just as you say, attacks are resource intensive. In the office example just the vitriol expended to maintain a full fusillade will become exhausting & eventually people move on. In the mean time it's still necessary to walk right into hostile territory every morning & do your job. Here it's important to be the best "you" you can be @ your job. Oh yeah, congratulations on your marriage & welcome back.

So Character Assassination is a strategy employed when you are "Clean". "Right". "Competent". By opponents who are likely infected with Insecurity. These observations alone do much to equip a "victim" of such an attack, for their defense. Thank You, beautiful.

Very good video. I admire your strength. Another thing is that if any friends stop being your friend based on false rumors and lies, then they never really were your friend to begin with. Loyalty is key when talking about friends, and their first reaction should be to ask you about it, with a sympathetic ear bent towards you, not towards your enemies.

I was attacked at a job via character assassination, from a Chinese young woman. When I was on my shift at the cash register, she daily removed $30 when I was absent from the register. It happened so much that the owner of the business warned me, then fired me. I knew I was being framed, but did not know who or why. Six months later she said to someone else there that displeased her for whatever reason, "You better watch out or I will do to you what I did to Elke!" That employee telephoned me and told me that she now knew I had been framed.

thank you blonde. I've watched your talks from close to the beginning and always marvel how level headed your advice is. My personal worse was in AA. Six years of sacrifice and dedication. All it took was an admission of love to a women above my station. When the white knights and betas were thru with me I had lost all. people openly shunned me as a homosexual. Nasty comments were made openly. I had no one who stepped up to support me. They even convinced a one particular poor soul I was sponsoring I was grooming him for sex. He killed himself two days later. Welcome to Cape Cod. I have never experienced a more viscous group of people. I am still hounded 13 years later. Worse decision i've ever made was to trust those soul sick people. Not all alcoholics are narcissus but all narcissus-es are alcoholic. And to be clear, AA is full of drug addicts. And it is anything but anonymous. I am not a homosexual, As if that has anything to do with it.
