I like events like this. My game recently had a "long night" event that said a giant space creature was passing by the sun, causing a multi-year night and causing factions to become more hostile. Keep in mind, my fortress had rimatomics turrets, bionics, charge weapons and embrasures and my neighbours were a tribal faction. Long story short, by the time the sun came back, all growing was done in greenhouses using the tilled earth mod, drug production had been entirely taken over by slave labor thanks to multiple large raids (even against such weaponry there were always a couple survivors) and my food production was flourishing. Sometimes, a terrible event can leave you stronger than ever

Call me crazy but I miss the bad ol' days when toxic fallout might last a couple of quadrums or longer. It really shaped each run it happened in (sometimes by ending them). Great tutorial, as usual. I don't have anything to add except that if you don't plan to/can't take your animals caravanning cull as many as possible as soon as possible. Also, if it comes down to eating kibble it's best to seal off the exits to prevent mental breakers from roaming out into the fallout.

I've found that keeping about 400 pemmican per colonist is a good start for food security. Animals can eat it too, and so long as you have something nicer to eat, your colonists won't dip into your reserves. This doubles as travel food and also for events like un-handleable manhunter packs where you can't go outside. I usually keep enclosed "service corridors" between structures so there's safe passages and they can double as centralized heating/cooling.
@DamienDarkside3 жыл бұрын
For everyone: There is a mod that allows "X per Colonist" (I believe by the same name, at work ATM) and you can easily set it to 4-500. Then it will automatically adjust to how many colonists you have in the colony. I do this, but for packaged meals. I always have 25 per Colonist, which is totally overkill, but boy does it sell well and train the shit out of cooking.

If youre still early on, or your pinned animals are pack animals, it is sometimes better to just caravan up and move a tile over because the toxic fallout will only be in that world tile.

I always do the "roof the outer pathways"-thing. It does not only help with toxic fallout, it also helps keeping those path clear of snow (if that's a thing in your biome). Good to have your pawns walk over snow free 100% pavements while raiders are trudging through deep snow :)

Building a roof over a field and then building a skylight into the roof would let most of the natural daylight in (90%) so crops would still grow but would be shielded from the fallout. Getting the skylights built requires more resources and time than just sticking a sun lamp down, but works over much larger areas and saves power. It also works for indoor hydroponics areas which makes organising them much easier than trying to cram them into a sun lamp’s limited range.

The biggest issue I had to face during Toxic Fallout was managing animals. I had WAY too many animals, and my place wasn't adapted for a fallout. So everyone was in the same complex, and getting the food for the animals meant going outside for a while to a nearby storage room (hay). Ofc then it's whether you have enough to feed everyone, which was tough. But I survived nonetheless! So now: not that many animals, and got to farm a ton of hay for next time ^^ Also houses are connected now (some lol) But sometimes the simplest solution is to move: My second colony had to face a toxic fallout, no chances of survival, so we made an emergency evacuation and launched pods to the main base, while waiting for the Fallout to go away.

You forgot that you can make a gas mask to slow the toxic buildup down by 80 percent, and you can also use detoxifier kidneys and lungs, a single lung gives 50 percent resistance, a kidney also gives 50 percent resistance, so you can use one detox lung and one detox kidney to completely negate that toxic buildup, and you can use one lung or kidney with a gas mask to get the same effect. To prepare for a toxic fallout, you can just make a gas mask for each of your colonists. Hope this helped!

Another great tip for Toxic Fallout, is to play Fallout. I don't mean quit and play Fallout, make your place a Vault if you can. I roof my entire zone, it's only a few pillars since I'm a bit more compact. Now my whole colony is a "bunker" and my colonists can move about. If I don't have Sun Lamps, I can grow Nutrifungus. Yeah, my colonists will probably complain but it's less complaints than STARVATION. If they eat it in a really nice looking dining room (toss some good art in there) anyways it totally counters it. Besides, you're looking to survive at this point not thrive. Of course if you have Hydroponics and the like, you can just cap the colony and proceed as usual.
