Just this past week planted all my gardens with Florida Broadleaf Mustard to try and control the nemetodes.

Good to hear. Would love to see a video when you till it in the soil.

Thank you that is easy enough!! Very surprising!!

I had those knots really bad on a lot of my potatoes this past spring. I suspected it was insects but could not find any information that showed those knots I was seeing on my potatoes. Now I know how to at least do some damage to those bugs. thanks Travis, that is helpful for us.

Easy peasy! I've got red giant mustard seeds; I bet a big dense patch of it would be pretty striking. I'll give this a try. I heard the reason this works is because mustard leaves have a lot of chitin. With all these hydroponics shops popping up on every corner, insect frass is pretty easy to come by. Do you suppose tilling some of that in would get it working right away, rather than waiting for a mustard crop to grow and then break down? Thanks so much for your input!
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Does insect frass contain glucosinolates? That's the compound in the mustard that does the nematode suppression in the soil.
@Katydidit5 ай бұрын
Chitin is found in the exoskeleton of crustaceans and some insects, as well as found in some fungi. .. If you dig deep enough on this topic you will discover a genetically modified form of Mustard initially grown in China to resist fungal issues in it's tuberous roots for which it is grown for.

Thank you for the info. After you've tilled the mustard back in the soil, how long do you have to wait before you can plant in the patch again?
@gardeningwithhoss2 жыл бұрын
wait 7-14 days

Will other plants from the brassicas work as well? Like arugula?

Oh yeah!

That is good news, as I love arugula... not so fond of mustard!

Would biofumigation work for other in soil parasites and diseases? For example I have had a problem with tobacco wilt on my bell peppers even though I have them on a three year rotation. Would a couple subsequent crops of mustards cut into the soil relieve this as well?
@gardeningwithhoss5 жыл бұрын
It's been noted to work on fusarium, verticillium, and other soil-borne diseases. Tobacco spotted wilt virus, however, is transmitted via thrips. So it's not a soil-borne disease and the biofumigation wouldn't help. Try growing hybrid varieties that are resistant to the wilt virus. That's what we have to do with tomatoes.

Would you happen to know if any type of mustard works? I've got a bunch of wasabi leaf seeds and I'm pretty sure it's actually a type of mustard.
And here I have been adding nematodes to help control leather jacket and chafer beetle grubs! Darn advertising!

There are beneficial nematodes and parasitic nematodes. We need the beneficial ones, but need to eliminate the parasitic ones.
@Katydidit5 ай бұрын
Your parasitic nematodes may be beneficial nematodes for your situation. There are a whole slew of good guy parasitic nematodes! I am wondering if there is a good guy parasitic nematode for root knot nematode issues?? Will the mustard treatment kill off or slow down the good guy Sf nematodes I just watered in??

Is there any fruit trees that are resistant to rkn? Also is any mustard work or just kodiak? I have a lot of chinese mustard growing. Can i plant mustard in other beds and then cut leaves and bring them to beds that are affected by rkn?
@gardeningwithhoss14 күн бұрын
Kodiak contains very high levels of glucosynolates, that will break down to form thiocyanates that can control nematodes and organisms which cause soil born diseases. Kodiak is not a mix or a blend it is all Brassica juncea, the species that has the correct type of glucosinolate to kill disease causing organisms. When incorporated into the the soil, the green tissues will release volatile compounds, allyl isothiocyanates as a metabolite from the reaction between 2 propenyl glucosinolate and myrosinase. Kodiak has a higher concentration (more per gram of plant tissue) of glucosinolates and produces more plant biomass that previous varieties. Kodiak's organic matter breaks faster compared to standard cover crops. Kodiak can cycle large amounts nutrients so that your save your residual nitrogen. Kodiak also improves water penetration and suppresses weeds while it grows. When you are ready to incorporate Kodiak into your soil, chop the green cover crop as fine a possible and then disk into the soil as soon as possible. Kodiak can be incorporated at any green stage of its growth, but the larger you allow it to grow the more total glucosinolate yield you will get -which will max out when the plants begin to go into a reproductive state. Allow a minimum of two weeks after you incorporate Kodiak before planting a new crop. Check out Stark link below for fruit trees. www.starkbros.com/tags/disease-resistant-fruit-trees?utm_

Ok so we have to wait how many months for this mustard to grow before we can cut up the leaves to use on nematodea. So effectively the populations r only going to multiply that much more while waiting? No? What am I missing?
