Just wondering, why do non Americans feel the need to worry about what Americans do??? By the way I’m American and don’t allow wearing shoes in my home. All shoes are left at the front door. Try not to group Americans because we aren’t the same. Americans do this all the time and look at the statistics - we’re still a healthy nation and don’t have more problems with infant health compared to other nations. I will bet this baby is totally fine today. Even better - they are an awesome American with a strong immune system. It realistically doesn’t matter as much as your disgust sensitivity tells you it does.

I think you mean WHY*? The answer is simple, babies nervous systems are used to dark, cramped and quiet spaces (hence the womb) when they come out, all their senses are on overload. Reverting them to their most comfortable state (or the state they developed in) calms the senses and restores peace to the baby. This is why most people who refuse to swaddle babies have infants they can't get to stay calm.

Yes, it's not developmentally appropriate to put your baby in a straight jacket like that. They need their arms by their face, also to help self-soothe. Ask any occupational therapist who works with babies!
