A tip to make the video easier to understand, dont change camera angles in between the stroke. Show the complete stroke from one angle then switch to another angle.

I agree. The edit does look cool but from a pedagogical perspective it's confusing with the change of angle between a single stroke.

I recently learnt that I've been doing breaststroke all wrong my whole life! I've been putting my legs out kind of to the side instead of bringing my feet up to my butt. I have a lot to unlearn! This video has helped

I have been the same! I learnt this stroke when I was in primary school and I always got told to sort of bring my legs up together, nore like knees towards my stomach, then kick them out wide like into a circle and back. And my arms were hands together, back of hands touching, then push the water out and do a sort of circle type thing with my arms too. No wonder I've always been terrible at breast stroke 😂😂

To me this is the most intuitive stroke of all. Breathing is effortless because the upward thrust of the pull phase naturally makes your head surface to take a breath.

Also the most demanding technique, I never really worked on it much growing up and it limited my ability in 200 & 400 medley ... As a masters swimmer I am actually faster at breastroke now. Sub 2:40 200m the last 2 years with a pb of 2:37 (25m pool) at age 41. Keeping the knees together got me from around 1:30 for 100m in the 400 medley to about 1:23 ... working on sub 1:20 to get me under 4:45.

@@realalbertan I love the 100 breaststroke, it's one of the few swimming events in which I'm better than average. That being said, I can't swim the 200 breaststroke at all. I find it weirdly difficult to pace in breaststroke, like I have 3 speeds, snails pace, moderate, and all out sprint.

Timing varies slightly from swimmer to swimmer, some videos tell you that you should start the kick phase once you have fully extended the arms, some like this one show that the swimmer starts the frog kick as soon as he's done with the pull. I've been revising my breaststroke technique and trying to find the optimal timing by starting the kick earlier (like in this video) or later, still I haven't understood which is better for me. I saw videos that have slightly different timing. If you watch breaststroke champions from underwater in slow motion (there are some videos out there) they don't have the exact same timing. Maybe it's personal.

Soooo, I’ve never had professional swimming lessons and my biggest obstacle has always been and still is, holding my breath! I’m certainly not in denial that there’s a phobia even still at 49 y/o… I found you guys, because I realized day one (September 4th) of joining an athletic center, whatever kind of swim that I’m doing, it’s not symmetrical! 🤷🏽‍♀️😝 I’m whipping my muscles into shape for a trip next month and there’s snorkeling, surfing and scuba diving. I’ve NEVER done any of it, but I’ve always been curious, so I’m bringing in my 50th Birthday without limits - well, sort of!!! 🤣 Watching your video, mine is a breaststroke, but my head doesn’t submerge - although, I’m practicing holding my breath and going under. I’ll see if the lifeguards are allowed to give me pointers on what they see that I should correct. I’m swimming further, so that’s motivating. 👏🏽👏🏽

Also, the higher you head comes up, the harder it is to keep higher hips, so try and keep it low as best you can. But the 1 pull 3 kick drill really helped me. Also the more flexible of a lower back you have, the easier it will be.

you should kick when you start the recovery, to not starfish and to create less drag

This is my favorite too. And IMO, the next most taxing after butterfly (especially at competitive effort). Since it’s very inefficient and momentum driven to propel forward at speed. I easily get my HR to my peak (170 ish) when doing it at best effort.

Actually I have just watched a video where they say you shouldn't kick the same time as you do the hand stroke. But here the swimmer does just that.

I wonder if anyone has used breast or fly in an Ironman competition. That would be very impressive. November will be my first Ironman.

I have managed to reduce my swim time for 1900mtrs down to 40 mins just using breast stroke. So I am planning to use it entirely for Dubai IM 70.3 in Feb

I go to Aqua Tots and a Level 5 and also they do the breast stroke a whole different way. They call it, "Diamond-out-squeeze". Your way is totally different, but I like it better than the Aqua Tots version!

I noticed there is two different types of strokes, 1) the one mentioned in the video 2) tucking your legs outward instead of outward what is the difference between those two strokes?

Hey! Nice work on the explanation. I really liked it. Just one question though - How should one coordinate hand and kick movement. They can be learnt independently, now is there any relation as to when should you move your arm in a particular direction depending on which stage of kick you are in? Please let me know

I wish you had shown more of whole body movement of the stroke where arms and feet move alternately. I swam this stroke for many years moving my arms and legs at the same time. Now I am trying to correct it but it is hard.
