You need to also check off the space with the comma when selecting your delimiter, otherwise you end up with a space in front of the name, as she did in this example. 😀

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a question that I believe many others also have. From a column with the full name of first name 2 or 3 middle names and last name. How could you separate only the first name in one column and the rest of the name in another column? Thanks in advance for your time

Hello, assuming your formatting has a space between first and other names in the cell, you can use the Text to Columns feature to extract the first name into a different column/cell. 1. Select the column that contains the full names and insert a new blank column next to it. 2. Go to the Data tab in the Excel ribbon. 3. Click on Text to Columns in the Data Tools group. 4. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard, select Delimited and click Next. 5. Check the box next to Space and uncheck all other boxes. You should see a preview of how the text will be separated in the Data preview section. Click Next. 6. In the third step of the wizard, you can specify the data format for each column if needed. For this case, you can leave everything as General and click Finish. You should now have two new columns: one with the first names and another with the rest of the names. Hope this helps! Can you clarify what you are trying to do? You can create text manipulation functions in Excel to handle this. Are you trying to update John & Jane Doe to "Doe, John & Jane?" or split them out? Thanks for watching!

Thank you Sharon for this video. I do have a question, whenever I do this instead of having a single space between the first and last name, it always ends up being around 30 spaces between the names. Anyone know why this is happening and how to correct? Thanks.

I'm not sure why that is happening, but if you have a cell formatted with text and too many spaces between first and last name, you can insert a new blank column next to the name column and use the TRIM formula. Click in a cell and type: =TRIM(A2) if A2 were the cell that had the name with too many spaces. TRIM will eliminate all the extra spaces. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Hi Ryan! Select the column in your spreadsheet that has the space+name. On the Home tab, in the Editing area, drop-down "Find & Select" and select "Replace." This opens the Find & Replace pop-up window where you can select the "Replace" tab, and in the field for "Find what:" place your cursor there and hit one space. Leave the "Replace with:" field blank and then click "Replace All." This will remove that space in the column or cell you selected. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
