How to tackle players who are WAYYY bigger and stronger than you!!
Step 1:
Determine your opponent's position and accelerate into him/her.
Accelerating into your opponent will generate a lot of power and strength for you to bring down your opponent. Even if they are heavier and stronger than you are, transforming speed to power will always be more powerful than pure strength.
Step 2:
Remember this: SHOULDER TO THIGH, HANDS TO CALVES.
By aiming your shoulder to your opponent's thigh, you will naturally get in a stance that is stable and sturdy. However, one thing to keep in mind is that you should always keep your head up and look forward. This helps you react quickly to sidesteps or evasion moves from your opponent.
For the hand positioning during the tackle, make sure your hands grab tightly on your opponent's calves. The thinnest part of the leg is the calf, which means that it is the weakest part. If you grab tightly on your opponent's calves, they will lose their balance easily and you tackle will be successful.
Step 3:
I didn't cover this in the video, but after the tackle, remember to get to your feet ASAP. Whether you are going to go for a jackal or simple move out of the way, make sure you get up quickly.
Hopefully this video helps!
Be sure to leave a comment if you have any questions :)

Good video and highlights what I discovered through years of being the smallest guy on the pitch...! The one advantage you generally have as a little guy over the big guys is that you can get lower than them and therefore under their centre of gravity - as illustrated in the video. Get under them, drive with your legs and wrap theirs and you should at least have a chance of bringing them down. Attempting to go high / smother tackle is a recipe for failure (in my experience). What I also found useful if someone was coming straight at me and I was static / not able to accelerate into them was to drop to my knees just before contact and then drive up and through their legs from that low position. Was usually violent enough to break through any attempts to fend me off and allowed me to drive through their legs to take them down.

I would say, faf de Klerk uses the wrong shoulder but bravery and everything else about the tackle is class.

He did use the wrong shoulder and as a result his head is on the wrong side, but he kept his feet moving and didn't lose momentum, and he kept a hold and kept contact with his shoulder, great tackle nonetheless

Food video, by the way I think that also the head position is really important. I think that faf tackle had the wrong head position. Of you lose the tackle with the head in that position you will go to the hospital for a neck fracture

It's a very good vid in many ways but tackling someone who is basically stationary is pretty easy, even if they are big. The hard thing is tackling someone running straight at you at pace.

Refer to the tackle at 2:56 The ball carrier is running full speed at the fullback. If you hit low enough, the ball carrier's own speed/momentum bring him down. All you need to do is to bind his legs and hold tight.

First don't rush to a big guy. He will destroy you if he knows how to bump off, like that -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/a56ac4ODatSba7M Second, you need to tackle as low as possible. Sometimes it means to jump (yes jump) in the ankles. And then, if he has no speed, you can apply this video's technics. But please, do not rush to a way bigger guy, you will hurt yourself.

@852RUGBY 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, tackling straight on takes a lot more courage. Try shifting to one side and aim your shoulder to the ball carrier's hips (i.e. getting your head out of the way). Then just make impact, leg drive and finish the tackle. Good luck!

If yr smaller use speed and position to get an easy drive grab that one leg n put the momentum out of play. Big dudes use momentum and aint stop start they have to build up n aint stopping once going. Be faster conditioned get on them n slow them down easy n technical. no need to big tackle. Thatl reduce their confidence somewhat n if you keep that down till into 2nd half get a headstart they wont get it back. Unless ur playing the all blacks this should be fool proof

Are you going to mention about ensuring your head is out of the contact area or do you not care about being knocked out?
@852RUGBY

Yes, usually the “same leg same shoulder” technique prevents the head from being in the contact area. Faf in the video does everything perfectly except for the head/shoulder placement.

Why do union players tackle across the body. We were always taught to put you're head to the side not across the body
@852RUGBY
@852RUGBY 3 жыл бұрын
I think union players tend to sidestep more, so that supporting players can set a ruck easily. That’s why it’s hard to adjust your head position when the opponent is changing directions more often.

0:25 - he should be using his right shoulder not his left. Neither of the first two videos is remotely helpful as the larger player is starting from a static position making it so much easier. The Wales/Ireland video is slightly better but not the best example.
