How I have successfully propagated Begonias and the method that worked for me!

You may know this by now, but you can cut the petiole (on the tiny parasol you removed) to about 1 inch long, and plant the parasol also. It will root and sprout at about the same rate or a bit faster than the middle vein on the main leaf cutting. Just push the short petiole (stem) down into the medium at a slight angle so that the parasol ends up laying flat on the surface of the medium.

Thanks for posting this...I've had limited experience and success with the method I was using...I will have to try this because that was exactly what I was wondering as I watched him cut off the petioles and the remains of leaves...I thought the same. They should root as well. Thanks for confirming this.

Because they like moisture, I’ve seen that putting a bag over the container will help retain the moisture and keep the leaves from drying. Also helps water less. You seem to be doing well regardless!

PlantingMemories I’m not entirely sure but from plant identification apps, it looks like Begonia boliviensis with darker leaves and orange flowers, I used your method and have a couple propagators full of them! Very excited to see how many take.

Nice video (& nice voice as someone else said).. quick question.. I see you're not using rooting hormone. Is it because it will not help it or just because begonia's root so well without it?

QUESTION: can I use short sharp scissors? I don't have a knife like that. I have only kitchen knives and they aren't sharp. I have some short scissors that are quite sharp. Will that do? I had someone try to give me how to do this via typing but I didn't quite understand what she was saying. The type written word is sometimes hard to get a point across or understood. So, thank you for this.
@PlantingMemories2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes scissors will work just fine! As long as you do multiple leaves, you’ll definitely get at least one successful propagation! Good luck
@bedtimebiblechat71522 жыл бұрын
@@PlantingMemories Do you mean several leaves on top of one another then cut with scissors? Or just several leaves one at a time? Thank you so much for helping me. My polka dot begonia had a broken tip with several leaves and I stuck it in water. Will it root that way or do I use one of the leaves like you showed?

Are they Rex begonia or cane? If it is cane begonia, then no. They won't produce a plant. Sometimes you can get a leaf to root but it won't make a plant without the stem node. So you need to take stem cuttings and prop those.

I just killed my second begonia rex. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened. Seeing how big the leaves are on your plants makes me wonder what the hell are you feeding these things 🤣
@PlantingMemories Жыл бұрын
Oh no! Haha honestly the only time my begonias get large is when I do nearly nothing to them, the ones I nurture and care for are often the ones that die! My biggest success with begonias is growing them inside a humidity container ie a propagator or clear storage container
@morsecodereviews1553 Жыл бұрын
@@PlantingMemories That gives me an idea! I'll make a mini greenhouse house for my next one. I thought watering it once a week was enough, maybe that was too much? Lol beats me, I swear they both up and died overnight.
