One important information is missing. At the very begining, before recording even the attitude, one must record the exact location (preferably with hand-held GPS or to be marked on the topographic sheet) and a location number has to be given for each location.

Good point, I should have mentioned that in the video

Funny, but you writing on the left page first just sets my OCD off! lol....One helpful suggestion for yourself and other folks keeping similar note books is to show what I call the calibration details of the GPS you are using.....Using my Topo map I find an easily identifiable known height like a spot height or trig point, and when at that location, I set my GPS altimeter so it's correct. I note the location, time, and altitude along with the weather conditions at the start of my entry...If the weather (pressure) is very variable or I am changing altitudes in the course of the day, I will repeat this....Additionally when noting down the grid ref of a location, I always note whether it's estimated ie Topo derived, Resection, or most commonly, GPS and if from the GPS, I included the quoted accuracy is +/- 3m or +/-5m ect at the end of the grid ref....

Good point, in this context it was for a mapping course along a lake shore so altitude was known at all times but something I should include so students think of it in future mapping trips

Do you always leave the left page blank for drawing or only when you know you will have to draw something?

I always leave it blank, frequently you need to go back and add notes so the space can be used for that as well and it keeps to book neater in the end. I find I still rarely have those pages remain blank.

doesn't your notes get blurry when it is raining? I was taught that using pen is not the best idea because of that, so I'm curious

Pencil is better, I use a pretty hard one usually to avoid smudging as well but when I tried to video it it was really hard to see the writing in pencil so I switched to a pen. I should have mentioned in the video to use a pencil though
