I lost 47 lb in the last 2 years with low carb and intermittent fasting. I went in to see my doctor for my annual checkup and had not only lost weight but was much healthier in every way. He said I should write a book, he said he wished all of his patients treated themselves so well and took such steps, and he said I got an A plus.

I've been following a keto lifestyle since 5/2023. I'm 70 and have T2D. In June my primary took me off the night time Metformin and changed the Amlodipine to Benicar. My numbers are great but, I haven't lost any weight. I'll have my first blood work done in September. It is diffacult to exercise due to back issues.

Thanks for sharing the statin decision aid. I decided to stop my statin. My risk came out very low with little benefit from statin. I will show that site to my doctor at my next appointment. 😊

Thanks for doing this video. I have been doing keto for 2 years. My A1c has been hovering around 5.6 to 5.7 during that period. I am curious as to the error bars on A1c measurements. Do you know where I can find information on the repeatability of A1c measurements? Also, I really appreciated the review of the risk calculator. My TC is 280 on keto and it used to be 130 on the SAD. Happily, my HDL is 79, and my triglycerides are at 74. I am NOT pursuing statin therapy.

Hello Dr. Westman, I have been trying keto since April of this year, so about four months. I wanted to do this not to lose weight because I am very much underweight need to gain it, but because I’ve heard it’s such a healthy way of eating. However, I’m not gaining weight and I’m still losing weight. I think the keto diet is causing this because I do not consume enough protein and fat on most days in order to get enough calories and avoid weight loss. I’m thinking I should give up on keto and start eating more carbs. I am 69 and overall I am pretty healthy but I need to stop losing weight and gain back the weight that I have lost. What do you suggest?

OK, 1:100 benefit from a Statin, since I've had a heart attack, what ratio exists? Or has the research even been done since Cardiologist push either a Vegan or Mediterranean diet?
@wandayonder9772
@wandayonder9772 Жыл бұрын
I had a heart attack a few years back too and our health benefits are negligible from statins, from everything I've read. The harms however can be great. Statins block the beneficial heart effects of vitamin K2 and CoQ10, they increase artery calcification, and they give us a heap of side effects. My heart arrhythmia has gone since I dumped Crestor 4mths ago.

@@wandayonder9772 Unfortunately, I was one of those uninformed patients who just trusted the doctor. When I started watching Keto influencers 5 years ago, I realized that my A1C was actually high (in the 7s) and had been going up for a few years. I had also been on a Statin (well various ones) for a few years as well. Started taking Ubiquinol & went off the statins a few months before my heart attack. I have a clotting disorder and have been on blood thinners for decades & I've read where coumadin leads to arterial calcification. So I guess I was in a heap of trouble long ago.

I wish medication ads would be banned, just like cigarette ads were. Does big pharma really believe that a TV ad with a high production value "song & dance" routine drive people to ask their MD for a prescription? (ex Jardiance). Unfortunately the answer is yes. BIG consumer marketing budgets💰

This is great as usual Dr. Westman. But how does one eat very low carb for health reasons (not for weight loss) & not lose weight? I am for the sake of my husband. He had a heart attack at the end of May & is now in cardiac fitness rehab 3 times a week. It's been hard with all the crazy erroneous outdated information about saturated fats & Cholesterol & eating healthy whole grains, avoid butter & red meat etc. He's always been very lean all his life, he's always eaten whole foods mostly & chicken, turkey, baked potato, chick peas, olive oils etc. Hhe's athletic, non-diabetic & never smoked & maybe he has an alcoholic drink once a week. He's been Paleo the past few years but now I'm having him eat super low carb. I don't want him on statins. But how do we prevent him from losing more weight. He cannot afford to lose more. He's 6'1 & weighs 156. He's lost 5 lbs. How do we remain keto for all the health reasons WITHOUT losing more weight???

@@jimrandall9927 Yes, your situation sounds very similar to my husband's. Keto is the BEST way for optimal health indeed especially when you've already had a cardiac event. But I'm wondering what can be done for him (you as well) to maintain or maybe even gain a bit of more weight without adding carbs that can contribute to inflammatory heart disease etc What to do?? Any ideas??

I have been following Dr. Westman for several years. He always says if you are not losing weight, you are eating too much food or too much fat. I would think that would work in reverse if you don't want to lose weight, add more fat, and an extra egg or more protein to your meal plan. In other words, eat more food.

Wish the militray wasn't so anti-keto for overweight military!!! They put them on the FDA low fat, low protein, plant heavy diet and they get fatter and sickier. The Navy Seals get to chose, but the average military member does not. Even my husband had to make sure he got 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day with limiting protein and fat or he got in trouble as physically fit, correct military shape. He now has prediabetis and high blood pressure, using keto has dropped 1 blood pressure med and lowered the second.

I started doing the keto diet (Craig and Maria Emmerich’s version) in April, not to lose weight but because I’ve heard how healthy it is. Actually, I need to gain weight because I am very much underweight and have lost five more pounds since beginning the keto diet. I cannot afford to lose any more weight. What would you recommend? Should I add more carbohydrates into my diet and get out of ketosis, or what? If you think I should add carbohydrates, what would be the best kind to add?

You incorrectly assessed the "benefits" of statins at 43:52 to anyone at very high heart risk from multiple conditions. The "benefit" of statins only reduces the risk from 1 in 4 to 1 in 6 likely events, and fails to account for the damaging metabolic changes caused by statins - increased artery calcification, blocking of vitamin K2 and CoEnzyme Q10, muscle wasting and other damaging side effects.

A1c 4.9,, but LDL-p 1678 and Dr. is sure I’m going to fill my arteries with cholesterol and doe!! Been Keto for almost 3 years!! Lost 140 pounds. How serious is this LDL-p….worry or not so much? You should search "Ken Berry cholesterol" I don't think you should worry about it. If you're worried get a CAC scan which while show if your arteries are calcified or not.

In Dr Ovadia’s (cardiac surgeon) book: ‘STAY OFF MY OPERATING TABLE…’, he says LDL is not a cardiac risk factor, HDL and Triglycerides are. It’s a great read.

The American Heart Association guidelines say that if a patient has a CAC of zero, statins need not be prescribed. So much for guidelines (written by Pfizer and Moderna, no doubt). My own total cholesterol is usually over 400 mg/dl going on eight years, but I’ve done two CAC’s and two CT angiograms. All showed no evidence of heart disease. Hypothetical disease never killed anyone. You only need care about actual disease. High LDL is not a disease in itself, so get your doctor to send you off for some scans so that you can see what the real situation might be.

I lost 50lbs in 6 months. started in December at 255, now sitting at 204ish. started with cutting sugar, then went to internet keto, added Intermittent fasting for a few months, since then just been following teachings from Westman here and doing total carbs. my slowdown point I think right now is I need to reduce fat. intake and increase protein. I have about 35lbs of fat left I want to loose before I am. in my personal ideal range. trying to make that work. honestly will have to incorporate some leaner proteins and now that I am used to the fat it's become a habit.
