Alot of people may not realize how smart animals are. Depends on the individual if they are patient enough to take on a furr baby. I've always believed that normal conversation with your animal is a natural bonding mechanism. Animals understand you and learn fast, if you converse with them as if they were a person, they will fall into that comfort zone with you and you'll have an incredible bond with your animal, no matter what species!
@kwiggy50913 жыл бұрын
I've always used baby food on a spoon and recommended it to my customers at work too with their rodents. The pair of girls I just adopted are so skittish they don't want to eat when I'm near. It's definitely going to take a while. I guess the first owner "rescued" them as feeders, and then surrendered them to a shelter. Then the second owner adopted them, but that didn't work out and now they're with me. So they don't have good experience with people thus far.

Something I found was helpful for young rats mostly, I've done this to tame wild roof rats as well! Not to the point i can pick them up yet but to the point I can stroke them with my hands and cup my hand overtop of them where they feel safe and snuggly underneath it. Fluffy eyeshadow makeup brushes!!! they feel like soft fur to them, and if they get spooked and bite the brush you don't get hurt. I put some food around the egde of the brush first, not jn rhe bristles but right above them, and the brush rubs their cheeks while they lick the food off. Mine now are comfier with my hands than with the brush, I use it now for spot cleaning their fur if need be. A slightly bigger one to fluff the larger rats fur back up after a bath works nice too, my biggest girl loved it for the moment I had her without any cage mates. Also getting them used to a hat or a pouch like one of those bonding pouches you can buy, or a little box inside the cage they like, you can offer them the entrace to those thinfs if you need to pick them up without spooking thrm, many will run right inside because they feel safe in there. I keep socks with mine so I can always scoop em up in a sock if I need to. 2/3 love it, the oldest rat I havedoesnt but she's super sweet and the farthest thing from skittish

Little bit of anecdotal evidence; when I got my first two cuties, they were very nervous and liked to stay at the back of the critter nation. I was super eager as a first time owner, and I really wanted them to trust me. After the first couple of days of letting them figure out their surroundings, here's what I did. I ended up leaving the front doors of their cage open, and I just kind of 'laid down' at the entrance, almost like I was sleeping on the ledge of the door. I would just stay there, and let them explore me and who I am. After a couple days of doing that, my girls got more comfortable climbing all over my hands and arms, and eventually started making all the way to my shoulders and head. It was an amazing bonding experience. I miss them everyday. ❤

@Ratdubly3 жыл бұрын
Don’t feel bad you did all the right things. The main thing is that the rats learn your hand is safe, it works better to start with food from your hands so they know you’re safe and also that approaching you leads to a food reward for them. If you started with picking them up first then it might have frightening them as they hadn’t managed to build a safe bond with you before being handled. If you feel that you need to restart then absolutely go for it! It’s never too late, once they trust you you’ll be able to have cuddles and play areas and they will be less likely to run away or be panicky around you 🙂 Hope that helped, Best of luck, I’m sure they will warm up to you in no time 😊

I have had rats for many years but I have never had a pair that is so scared like my new two are. I have had them for almost a week and all they do is hide in their sputnik all day and night. I have done the intro to my hand but they don't come to it. I did take them out of their sputnik to clean it and put them on my shoulder to try and get them used to me, but they just peed all over me. Not sure what to do with them or what to do to get them over their fear. Any advice would be helpful.

I got 2 rats from this auction place a couple days ago. They were in a tiny box, and it was not in good condition. I made sure to bid and save them from being snake food. Anyways, I already had some coming soon (tomorrow now) so I had a cage set up. They’re doing really well, one got as far as letting me stroke it a bit and climbing on my hand. I just don’t know how I’m going to introduce the rats. I’m getting 2 more, but neither pairs are familiar with me.

That's great advice! However, at step 2, the issue is my rats really do bite me. I've been bitten on multiple occasions and sometimes it already was a really bloody mess, is there anything I can do against this?

get welder's gloves to handle them. They are probably cross bread with feeder rats so they don't have the bite inhibition gene.

hello! i found your video very helpful! tho I'm afriad I've scared them, i was forced to take them out for the cage and in a play area yo clean the cage, it was wayy to filthy after only two days, before one of my rats (who's very social) went up to my could stay on my hand and wasn't afriad of me, i could pet him, and the other one was still shy, but now they won't even come to my hand anymore, have i completely failed or can I start over? I'm so scared I've misused their trust

Just adopted 2 rats from the animal shelter both are nervous but one will let you pet him the other is really skittish. I'll try your methods and see how it goes thanks. Edit PS your black rat is very beautiful!

What if my rat nips hard at me? Like maybe she thinks I have food? For instance if I open the cage to clean or something on of my girls gets curious and bites me pretty hard

In those two weeks, how much time each day did you spend with them?
