Thank you! I feel like so much advice is just "handle them!!!" Like what?! My boys are six weeks old and very skittish, they hate being held right now. This is a much more gradual approach.

@@RatdublyCan I substitute baby formula for peanut butter? Or is there something about the fat and oil content that makes it no good for training/acclimation like this?

@@giantidiot31 If you water down peanut butter, you can give it to your rats safely. Pure non-watered down peanut butter could choke them, and yes, is unfortunately a bit unhealthy.

Alot of people may not realize how smart animals are. Depends on the individual if they are patient enough to take on a furr baby. I've always believed that normal conversation with your animal is a natural bonding mechanism. Animals understand you and learn fast, if you converse with them as if they were a person, they will fall into that comfort zone with you and you'll have an incredible bond with your animal, no matter what species!

I've always used baby food on a spoon and recommended it to my customers at work too with their rodents. The pair of girls I just adopted are so skittish they don't want to eat when I'm near. It's definitely going to take a while. I guess the first owner "rescued" them as feeders, and then surrendered them to a shelter. Then the second owner adopted them, but that didn't work out and now they're with me. So they don't have good experience with people thus far.

Something I found was helpful for young rats mostly, I've done this to tame wild roof rats as well! Not to the point i can pick them up yet but to the point I can stroke them with my hands and cup my hand overtop of them where they feel safe and snuggly underneath it. Fluffy eyeshadow makeup brushes!!! they feel like soft fur to them, and if they get spooked and bite the brush you don't get hurt. I put some food around the egde of the brush first, not jn rhe bristles but right above them, and the brush rubs their cheeks while they lick the food off. Mine now are comfier with my hands than with the brush, I use it now for spot cleaning their fur if need be. A slightly bigger one to fluff the larger rats fur back up after a bath works nice too, my biggest girl loved it for the moment I had her without any cage mates. Also getting them used to a hat or a pouch like one of those bonding pouches you can buy, or a little box inside the cage they like, you can offer them the entrace to those thinfs if you need to pick them up without spooking thrm, many will run right inside because they feel safe in there. I keep socks with mine so I can always scoop em up in a sock if I need to. 2/3 love it, the oldest rat I havedoesnt but she's super sweet and the farthest thing from skittish

Little bit of anecdotal evidence; when I got my first two cuties, they were very nervous and liked to stay at the back of the critter nation. I was super eager as a first time owner, and I really wanted them to trust me. After the first couple of days of letting them figure out their surroundings, here's what I did. I ended up leaving the front doors of their cage open, and I just kind of 'laid down' at the entrance, almost like I was sleeping on the ledge of the door. I would just stay there, and let them explore me and who I am. After a couple days of doing that, my girls got more comfortable climbing all over my hands and arms, and eventually started making all the way to my shoulders and head. It was an amazing bonding experience. I miss them everyday. ❤

I know they like to kinda chew on it to fluff it up it wa that sort of typical colorful fluffy bedding and I couldn't take it out of his mouth as we rushed him to the vet,but before we got there,it was too late.After 9 years,I've missed having a rat,but I don't want a repeat & does the wood type cause a danger of splinters?

Im no rat expert but I have the exact same problem. Nugget is very brave and will bite on ANYTHING and Loki is very timid and will only except food if your eyes are closed. What worked for me was I bought a ton of different treats and food and see which Loki likes most. I then would give it to him ALL the time and now he trusts me at lease a bit. If Nugget bites me or anything I would flip him over and gently hold his head witch he knows that means to stop! Hope this is helpful.

I just adopted some rescue rats, had them in a carrier bag for an hour on the ride home and was petting them and they seemed fine, ever since ive got home theyve been very skittish and shying away from my hand, i sadly think i might have messed up my bonding with them by not making them feel safe enough at first :( i have 2 blankets in their cage and a hammock, gonna get them some hideaways soon, would these steps work fot rescues? The lady before me had them for 5 months and the person prior had them for about 5-7 months, she was a breeder and said she had socialized them but they hadny had the best beginning to life it seems. Would these steps work for adult rats? Thank you so much! What do I do if I don’t have space to let my rats run around? I have a very small house and none of the rooms have doors so I cannot let them free roam anywhere, especially because I also have a cat. It breaks my heart, but I moved here with them and didn’t know space was going to be an issue here. Any ideas??

Our rats are to small for the cage we got is it okay to leave them in a smaller cage until they get bigger? Or would it stress them out to move them?

Really good video but my issue is that my room isn’t safe and secure so their free roam time has to be in a playpen. How do I get them to the cage from the playpen if they hate being picked up? I can’t let them make their own way as I don’t have the secure space/resources for this. I’m worried they’ll go missing/chew wires if they’re ever outside of the playpen and I also have cats who I put in a separate room whenever the rat cage is open but if one of my rats goes missing during roam time, then what do I do?

Hi, it’s best not to give rats hay, they just have rat food or rat nuggets and can have vegetables too 😊

Will this work backwards? I’ve done it all wrong :( I’ve done the baby food. But I’ve done lots of picking them up and a started with a play area to bond. One has escaped and they’ve panicked before. I’m 2 weeks in. Should I start over?
@Ratdubly
@Ratdubly 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t feel bad you did all the right things. The main thing is that the rats learn your hand is safe, it works better to start with food from your hands so they know you’re safe and also that approaching you leads to a food reward for them. If you started with picking them up first then it might have frightening them as they hadn’t managed to build a safe bond with you before being handled. If you feel that you need to restart then absolutely go for it! It’s never too late, once they trust you you’ll be able to have cuddles and play areas and they will be less likely to run away or be panicky around you 🙂 Hope that helped, Best of luck, I’m sure they will warm up to you in no time 😊

hey im not 100% sure but I think I saw a wire bottom to this cage? If so id 100% recommend to cover this with fleece or whatever cos its rly painful on their feet and not safe for them! Sorry If I saw wrong

Thank You for pointing that out, yes you saw right! Since then I realised and have covered it over now but it’s great that you point these things out just in case anyone who does it doesn’t realise 🙂

I’m a volunteer at the rat shelter and tomorrow I’m picking up 2 nests with 2 momma’s each nest has 9 really scared baby’s and 1 scared momma and the reason they are coming to me is so I can tame them but the last momma with 9 baby’s I had bit me when I stuck my hand in I did get her tame but she sadly passed away of an unknown reason. But do you have tips on how to tame 18 scared baby’s and 2 scared momma’s ?

I have had rats for many years but I have never had a pair that is so scared like my new two are. I have had them for almost a week and all they do is hide in their sputnik all day and night. I have done the intro to my hand but they don't come to it. I did take them out of their sputnik to clean it and put them on my shoulder to try and get them used to me, but they just peed all over me. Not sure what to do with them or what to do to get them over their fear. Any advice would be helpful.

I got 2 rats from this auction place a couple days ago. They were in a tiny box, and it was not in good condition. I made sure to bid and save them from being snake food. Anyways, I already had some coming soon (tomorrow now) so I had a cage set up. They’re doing really well, one got as far as letting me stroke it a bit and climbing on my hand. I just don’t know how I’m going to introduce the rats. I’m getting 2 more, but neither pairs are familiar with me.

That's great advice! However, at step 2, the issue is my rats really do bite me. I've been bitten on multiple occasions and sometimes it already was a really bloody mess, is there anything I can do against this?

get welder's gloves to handle them. They are probably cross bread with feeder rats so they don't have the bite inhibition gene.

hello! i found your video very helpful! tho I'm afriad I've scared them, i was forced to take them out for the cage and in a play area yo clean the cage, it was wayy to filthy after only two days, before one of my rats (who's very social) went up to my could stay on my hand and wasn't afriad of me, i could pet him, and the other one was still shy, but now they won't even come to my hand anymore, have i completely failed or can I start over? I'm so scared I've misused their trust
