This is a very easy trick, most mice can learn it within a few minutes (my record holder only needed less than a minute!). Always raise your criteria as soon as ever possible, try not to get stuck on a step.

Taught my dog to spin for treats- now he spins for everything. If he wants your attention he'll spin. He'll go to the back door and spin when he needs to go outside. We only taught him with food or when we would say 'spin'. But he just does it whenever for whatever now.
@dancepiglover4 ай бұрын
To stop that behavior, reward only when you give him a cue to do so. It can be a hand gesture, a verbal command, or both. If he spins to get your attention, give him no attention at all (or any other type of reward). Teaching him to do a number of things can help, too, because then he won’t be hyper-focused on doing one thing. Have some sort of cue for each thing, be consistent in your cues, and make sure that everyone does it the same way as you. I don’t know if it’s too late for you to take this advice, but maybe it could be helpful for someone else.

When Spiny mice are distressed, they bite off each other's tails and ears. And Kiki and her sisters were very distressed, they were found in a small cage with 45 others and were in the animal shelter for two years then. Kiki has the longest tail of all her sisters, some had not tail at all.

Yes, they remember the tricks for months an even for years! Especially Spiny mice (the ones in this video) have an excellent memory.

As long as you still practice it with them, they should have no problem at all with remembering the trick.

Nikki V, these are pet mice :) They don't carry any diseases, probably even less likely to carry disease than a dog or cat because they live indoors only.
@MouseAgility11 жыл бұрын
No, four is the absolute minimum (I have seven and wouldn't keep less). A pair is just not a group and unnatural for them. But remember that Spiny mice are probably not the best species for beginners. When they are stressed, e.g. by a too small enclosure (and even 2 square meters can be too small for them), they bite off each others tails and ears. And they are relatively hard to introduce to each other, you need some experience to do it. And their nutrition is quite a difficult subject, too.

The treats I use here consist of pure millet, no added salt or sugar. So they can have as much as they want. But if your treats are unhealthy or/and too rich in calories, you can of course over-feed them.

Hi! I got mine from the animal sanctuary. Sounds like "spin" is not yet under stimulus control. You should always ignore it if he offers is without a cue, and you have to be very consequent. Btw, "roll over" is a very hard trick for fancy mice, concrats!

Hi! First thing you should do is to get your mouse some friends, mice are highly social and cannot live alone. And they are nocturnal, so it's normal that you don't see much of her during daytime. You just have to accept that. If she is scared of your hand, try to offer her treats from a long spoon. And wait till she comes to you by her own, never hold her or put her out of her cage against her will. With other mice around her, she will probably feel safer.

@MouseAgility11 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can't just keep one mouse, they are highly social and need to live in groups of at least four. There is a difference between species. Fancy mice do have some smell (but females and neutered males are not bad if you have a well-aired cage), Spiny mice (the ones in this video) are almost odorless, as well as female Multimammate mice (aka ASF rats). Male Multimammate mice smell something like dusty peanuts, not really animal-like and some people don't even notice it.
@covidinfectedmonkeypox67752 жыл бұрын
I see you have spiny mice, me too and If there all females you can keep them together but good luck keeping multiple male mice together they will murder each other unless you can find a vet that will neuter them which is hard in a lot of places and around 200$ dollars each mouse I don't think many people are able to pay 800$-1000$ to keep 4-5 mice together I only have females now because of this before I would just let them play together supervised but not when I wasn't there to watch them cause they would always eventually fight anyway just my opinion or experience I really love your videos it's amazing what you taught them people who see your videos will hopefully be nicer to mice sadly some people need to see an animal has intelligence to respect them

There was a lady in L.A. who had working rats. People would hire her to help run computer cables through office space ceilings. A rat wearing a harness, dragging a very long string, would be inserted into the ceiling over the company's server. She would go to the new computer location. She would summon them, they would come, dragging the string. She would take them down, unhook them, and give them some peanuts. The string was then tied to a cable from the server, and pulled through. :-)

Hi, I think you're confusing something, there's no classical conditioning in this video (or in any of my others).
@GretgorPooper10 жыл бұрын
MouseAgility Maybe I don't know the exact definition of the therm, then.
@MouseAgility10 жыл бұрын
I just always wonder why people call the training of a small animal "conditioning", and if a dog would do the very same, they would call it smart. Honestly, if the mice in this video would have been dogs or horses, would you have called it "classical conditioning" then? Mice and other rodents learn the very same way as any other animal and are just as smart, mice learn even much faster than dogs and are capable of higher forms of learning like social learning. That's why I'm always a little disappointed when people think mouse training is something technical that doesn't require intelligence.
@GretgorPooper10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well, even learning by conditioning requires intelligence, especially when it comes to associating concepts with actions. I mean, conditioning and smartness can, and must, coexist. I never meant to imply that mice were less capable than other animals, sorry.
@pepperskyberry723110 жыл бұрын
MouseAgility Actually, stimulant conditioning by association requires a high degree of intelligence! Very much of all learning in any animal is conditioned or mimicked, but the mental processes required to associate a complex behavior (like a twist involving dozens of coordinated muscle movements in a specific sequence) with any sort of response from the environment need to be extremely highly developed. And they are! Nature has been conditioning animals for millions of years; the learning itself hasn't lost any significance just because scientists gave it a name. (And clicker training is conditioning by definition. :) Nothing wrong with that.)
