My team has been banging our heads against a wall when it comes to RL 1.3. Your video tonight really helped clear up some misconceptions that we had about the standard. Teaching this from a "whole book" perspective for littles, is just too much. I love the idea of the pictures, the scenarios, and then using a few sentences or a paragraph. Sometimes as educators, we just need to see and hear someone say the obvious. I feel like primary teachers (such as myself) often overthink! Thank you for your insight and ideas!

I couldn't agree with you more!! I find myself overthinking and complicating things too, then I remember us primary teachers are setting up the building blocks for our students! We aren't "dumbing it down" or anything either! We are slowly scaffolding so they understand the concept. I am glad this video helped :)

Hi, love your videos, however, have a question because this confused me for a long time. Topic and main idea are not the same thing, correct? I ask because you use the terms interchangeably. Topic is like the subject and main idea is what the author wants you to learn from the story. So for your circle map the topic is basketball but the main idea could possible be the equipment needed to play basketball. Or am I still confused?

I think it's ridiculous to teach these concepts before 2nd grade bc I see that a lot of children can't even read nor process this Concept. Let alone try to use unplanned pictures as a substitute teacher with individual students. It's just not practical.
