Forget ignoring food..I realized how much I had learned from you recently.. I have brought up my 10 rescue street dogs based on your techniques and they are a pretty good bunch.. Which I take for granted sometimes.. Last weekend we took one of our dogs to the beach for the weekend and he was off leash and a couple of local residents warned us that there were two packs of aggressive stray dogs on the beach and we shouldn't go further with our dog... Suddenly about 10 dogs ran towards us and I was so proud and happy when our dog was totally calm, ignored them and continued sniffing around , we walked right past them and they soon lost interest as they weren't getting a bad vibe from him... Mind you, my dog hasn't seen a dog outside of our bunch in one year, so quite an achievement.. Oh and later he even played with a couple of them... So thank u..

Cesar, thank you for sharing your God-given talents with the world. Your instincts in understanding dogs is incredible. You have blessed countless lives -- humans and dogs -- through your teaching. Your infinite patience in training humans and rehabilitating dogs is awe inspiring. You have brought so much joy to humans and dogs in helping them to co-habitate and understand each other. Years ago I watched the Dog Whisperer, now I have found you on KZbin and have been watching your Cesar 911 clips. You have taught me so much about psychology -- and I hold a minor in psychology. We love you, Cesar! I have a carsick dog. Everytime. We are only taking her in the car for walks in the woods now so maybe she would like the car. (A good idea for a video). She is the only dog in the 19 dogs i have owned in my life. I am clueless. It might be a health problem but Vets don't know what to do. We like to take our dogs everywhere we go.🥺
@markfuller3 жыл бұрын
When you say carsick, do you mean merely vomit and not feel well (like a person)? Or, more than that (anxious? salivating? diarreah?). I can think of a couple episodes of Dog Whisperer that involved the latter. That's fear of riding in the car, not motion sickness. I can tell you the episodes if that's what it is.
@marsack73 жыл бұрын
@@markfuller That is what it is. Fear of riding in the car. It is really bad. We have just taken her for a ride to the trails which she LOVES. I would LOVE to see what Cesar has to say. We like to take our dogs everywhere we go and hate leaving her at home in the pen. Never had this problem before and I have had 19 dogs.
@markfuller3 жыл бұрын
@@marsack7 The episodes I was thinking of is Dog Whisperer 3-15 (Promise, aired as 3-13). The dog fears being in the car, salivates, defecates. Also 4-8 (Olive, aired as 4-9) same thing. Both dogs are extreme examples that sound like yours. Another episode is 4-29 (Beau, aired as 4-31). This one's a little different because the owner is in a wheelchair, and needs her dog to go with her on the transport van. But, the dog has fear/symptoms like the above two dogs. So, almost the same, but not the same. 8-8 (Jagger) is a dog who gets anxious/disturbed when the car deviates from the normal route. Cesar 911, season 1, ep. 2 (Beau) might also be useful. This is a dog who won't get in the car (but, I don't think it was overwhelmed while in the car). It shows how to work on the entry into the car. (If I were you, I'd work on entering the car but not going anywhere. Make it a game, enter one side, exit the other side, praise (like you see in this episode). Work up to shut the doors, then open and invite out. Then start the engine, but don't go anywhere (turn off, invite out). Baby steps?

First video I’ve seen that’s like a class, thank you. I foster a dog that I want to adopt but, I’ve been told “ he’ll never get along with another dog inside a house. He will protect his food, toys, you, whatever forever.” Because of that I can’t take him on the road with me to visit people. I will try this with his food and hopefully I’ll get it right. Then I’ll be able to actually adopt this wonderful old guy.
@markfuller3 жыл бұрын
I've worked with a lot of dog aggressive dogs and it's false that they can't be rehabilitated & be more social. That notion (and the more diminutive "dog selective" terminology) comes from "modern training." I was into it for over a decade. It doesn't work for a lot of problems, it's not balanced training. When it doesn't work, enthusiasts of that style of training just dismiss it as the dog can't be trained (it would be cruel to use "outdated methods" and actually help the dog). From what I've seen it comes down to leadership, and the dog knowing *you* sort things out, not the dogs. (That's the shortcoming with "modern" training. It's very formulaic and laboratory-oriented. It does't get into leadership, your energy, the dog's energy, psychology. It's more "do this." Not "be this."). The best thing you can do is start watching Dog Whisperer (9 seasons, but if you watch the first 3-4, twice, you'll see this problem addressed many, many times. Keep notes because you'll see things that stand out to you, and you'll forget where you saw it after another couple episodes. Watching twice can be useful because things will make sense due to things you see later. You'll see things different the 2nd time around.). Cesar has a 6-volume "Mastering Leadership" series. That's useful to watch (vol 1 is "people training for dogs." vol 2 is "becoming your dog's pack leader."). Those give you a more direct introduction to how Cesar views things compared to absorbing it through episodes. The episodes will be more understandable from the start.
@markfuller3 жыл бұрын
BTW: I don't want to mislead you or anyone that it's easy or safe. I've been bitten a few times. Dogs can be bitten. It would be best to hire a trainer. Watching the episodes would help you know what kind of trainer to hire (someone balanced, not political-correct "modern" training). Then you'd also know how to continue what they do. (I know a "modern" advocate who sends her dogs off to trainers to do the dirty work she won't do herself, while running others down for using "outdated methods." As soon as she gets them back, they go right back to not getting along. She has to keep them gated in separate rooms. "They were fine when they came back, but after awhile..." It's her. But, being anti-Cesar is better than results.). Also, there could be dogs who absolutely won't get along with another. I haven't found one yet. It's easy to dimiss any dog who doesn't get along as "this one won't." You see owners do that in the epsiodes. They were convinced it could never happen, "not with this one." I've experienced that with owners too. Sometimes they're super easy cases. Once the dog had leadership, it was over. The people were living something in their minds, and enabling the dog. Being aware of your own energy, living in the moment (without self-talk about what has happened, or will happen) makes a big difference. You see Cesar refer to that a lot in the episodes. That "energy" topic is hard for people to understand because it sounds like nutty hippy stuff. Most people think "yeah, yeah, I know what that is" and are imagining common lingo everyone's heard. But, it's very real if you can get into it. Guided mindfulness videos are a good place to start (where you develop the ability to be aware of your self-talk, inner-narration and how the present moment is without that.).

Thank you. I have watched Ceasar for a long time. He helped me enormously with my late pitty. But then I knew her from a puppy. This guy is already 5 and been in the shelter for 4 of those years. He was adopted and returned twice and fostered once, before me, and returned. So naturally he has other issues as well. We were working on those with good outcomes til I had to travel again. That meant returning him again. When I get back I’m hoping to pick him up and refresh those works and start on the ignore. Thanks so much for responding.

I'm ordinarily a "cat person," though I certainly don't dislike dogs. I recently moved in with a new roommate who owns a German Shepherd mix. My roommate warned me that her dog always jumped on people when they came in, but that her dog "wouldn't bite." I've watched quite a few of your shows over the years, and I had a idea that if I followed what you said about not looking at and not touching this dog at the first meeting, as well as making it clear if necessary that I wouldn't take kindly to being jumped on by correcting this dog calmly, that we'd get along just fine. I'm happy to tell you that after meeting the dog for the first time, my roommate told me, "You're the first person she's never tried to jump on!" My thanks for equipping me to have a successful first meeting and continuing respectful relationship with my new "dog-mate." It works beautifully!

Same for me. I'm not a huge Dog person but I learned how to handle Dogs from Cesar Millan. Dogs I meet jump me at first but I simply don't give them attention and only give it to them when they don't jump at me. Without fail after a while they stop jumping at me.

People talk smack about Cesar's theories but he gets results, he's easy to follow and he does it all with respect for the dog
@markfuller3 жыл бұрын
I was into so-called "modern (4-quadrant) training" for over a decade, before it was politically correct. I talked smack too. After a few years I realized, it's like a religion. People know it doesn't work, and make excuses for their dogs kept in seperate gated rooms while criticizing "outdated methods" (that work.). "Modern" training seemed to attract that kind of personality that needs "us vs them." It's cliquish that way, a smug satisfaction at being "pure" and lording over others, pushing others down to feel better about one's self. I always get the mental image of Aesop's fable about "the dog in the manger." Everyone I knew knew it didn't work as well as they said the "studies and research" prove it does. It was more about being correct that way, the latest "findings." It didn't matter if those findings didn't apply to all problems, all dogs, all people. It turns into a religion where the studies are like scripture. "It should work." ("Well, it doesn't." "Well, it should."). It's the proverbial "cart before the horse." As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." It turns into that kind of emphasis on purity/consistency, not asking if it works. I knew people who would say "well, if we banned the difficult breeds, and had committee oversight of breeding choices, the resulting dogs would be more lab-grade, and the training would work fantastically." It was circular that way. Modern training theory is good in its own right. It's informative and a good way to look at things. I encourage people to learn about it. But, it's not balanced by itself. It lacks an emphasis on leadership, the dog's energy, the human's energy.
@snoowwe3 жыл бұрын
@@markfuller my experience with training my dogs is that every dog is itself, there isn't a tried and true method. But there are methods that help you find what works best for your dog and that's where I think Cesar is brilliant at. He doesn't really treat every dog the same, but he always starts with the basics. My dogs prefer different brands of dog food for example. They aren't one dimensional beings just because they aren't as smart as humans

@markfuller3 жыл бұрын
FWIW: I always think of discipline as sharing the same root word as "disciple." People think "discipline" means being mean. But, if you "disciple" (verb) someone, you're just showing them your way. Guiding them to be your follower. Discipleship. It's a way of being. Disciplining a dog is an action coming from that way of being. A master teaching a follower (in trust and love, as you said. Dogs really do convey a lot of feelings to us. You may think that you can easily identify each of their tails, voices, and gestures, but there are many points to watch such as the movement of their ears, the opening of their eyes, and the upturning of their hair. In order to understand a dog's feelings, it is important to know its personality well, and to observe its behavior and the way it moves its body.🐕🐕🐕😻😻😻😻😻😻😻

The season 2 dvd of Dog Whisperer has a bonus disk. One feature is "behind the scenes." One of the producers says that they often had to change the way they planned to tell the story because as soon as Cesar arrived, the problem was gone. They didn't have the "before" footage they needed. As a result, every crew member had been bitten at least once because they had to put themselves in risky positions to get the footage.

He doesn’t have super powers. He just paid attention to how dogs are vs people. Most people treat them like people. Some dogs luckily come out ok but most haven’t the first clue. It’s embarrassing how little people know vs how many people have dogs.
