The first thing to teach after getting comfortable in the water is how to get out through the stairs. Put treats or a toy near the stairs at first. After a few practice runs they know how to get out themselves without panic.

I really enjoy watching these video's. Zak you explain everything so clearly and shows us that it's not just a thing to teach your dog to love swimming, but that it takes time and love. My dog (3 years old) doesn't really like water in another way than drinking it. We adopted it from an animal shelter so I guess his former bosses did anything with swimming. 2 weeks after adoption I trained my dog to stand in his dogpool with 4 paws. All it took was 15 minutes and lots of joy and encouragement. I even showed him with my own hand in the water that it was safe. It felt really good to see him so happy about it. Now, he still doesn't swim, but I'm alowed to splash some water to him. I somehow used the same method as Zak did (without knowing) and it works, as long as the dog has fun. Thanks Zak! You're my favorite dog trainer!!

That’s awesome. My four year old rescue dog loves wading but doesn’t want to swim. True confession: he fell in the water while jumping into a boat. I reacted. Not good. I’ll definitely use these tips to try again. He’s a high energy boy who will love swimming once he gets past any fear.

We had a lab mix, named Sadie, who loved to swim in our pond! My kids were smaller then and they would all play in the pond for hours every day. She passed away about 4 months ago at the age of 13. We decided to get another dog and choose a German Shorthaired Pointer. We choose her because they are high energy and love the water. She's a scaredy cat though and is hesitant. She was 12 weeks old when we got her and I would say had never been exposed to the water. Your video has given me some pointers and hope! Thank you so much! One thing that Zak didn't mention, but once your dog is comfortable with/enjoys water and you have a pool, always, always teach your dog how to get out without your help so if they jump in when you're not watching they don't exhaust themselves by swimming around and trying to get out, and then drown.

My GSD pup Kona (about 7-8 months) just took to the water like it was nothing. No coaxing. No treats. Totally surprised us. Within an hour, she was much more comfortable in the water than our lab/pit mix. BTW, this is a beautiful dog. Aussie mix? Had one as a kid, great personality.

I've had 4 or 5 Shelties and they have all been afraid of thunder and fireworks. Now I have a Golden Retriever and he is the first dog I've ever owned that isn't afraid of either thunder or fireworks. In fact, I sat out on the back porch with him this July 4th and we watched the fireworks together and it didn't even phase him.

Slowly. Sit at waters edge on a warm day at the creek with a gradual drop off. Let her walk around you. Never force. Slip in a little deeper. Let her walk around you some more. Comfort her. Be her safe place. Little by little at her pace. Not all at once. It may take many days. But always be in the water with her and she will learn to love the water like you. Let her always be comfortable. I think that drop off scared the dog in this video a bit. Not good. It may turn off some dogs to the water. Slowly but surely is the way. Be patient.

When Zak said, “dogs naturally know how to swim”, it reminded me of this time that my dog was at a trainer’s home for a couple of weeks. And she has a pool in her backyard. No one believes me when I tell them my sister got her purebred cavalier at 10 weeks from a shelter, and I got my Pomeranian/chihuahua at 8 weeks as a rescue from Puerto Rico. So I tried to get my Jack Russell to swim in the bath today. He seems to have a love/hate relationship with water but we gave it a little try today. He has swam in the sea before. I filled the bath with about 2 inches of water and sat in it with his treats and toys. We played a little but he was licking his lips. I have a chocolate Labrador called milo and he loves water. He is not a qualified service dog but he helps me a lot with my adhd so I take him with him wherever I can. When I go cliff jumping on weekends with friends he comes a long and he jumps off the low cliffs 😂 (I don’t let him jump off high ones don’t worry) he also comes out on the boat and he loves swimming in the ocean. My male, at age 6 months, was terrified of the water so we desensitized him gradually. First thing we taught our Yorkies was how to get to the steps to get out and swim without a vest. Now they have vests so they are properly balanced in the water and can swim/play fetch in the pool for up to an hour. If they fall in they instinctively know to swim to the steps to get out. This took them 3 times to learn “swim to the steps.” We have a hard time convincing them it’s time to get out because they love the pool so much. My female has a torn ACL and between rehab with a vet and swimming at home, she is recovering without surgical intervention. For big dogs it’s the best exercise to prevent or slow down hip dysplasia. I think every dog should have a pool, but I’m biased. :-)

I have 2 dogs that I got from Puppy Lifeline in Brighton, CO. We got one 5 years ago and a new puppy a couple months ago.

Mine reacted the same way as this pup when we took him to a pool for a dock diving class today, to work on getting him used to swimming, first. 😅 I’m going to get him a life vest. Actually, for the first time, my instructor was holding him and I walked to the end of it. He ended up just walking right in and came to me and I think after that first time he realized it was a bad idea.. hoping to rent the pool soon and have some of their friendly dogs go swimming to try and get him thinking it’s fun to do. A problem we are having is he loves the wubba toys I got for him to use for dock diving, but only when we’re at home.. he will fetch them at home.. I don’t want to use treats as a reward for this process because we’re getting into dock diving so I need to somehow build his toy drive outside our home. We use treats for agility, but that’s different.

My Siberian husky hates water but thanks to Zak and his amazing tips I swim with my pet no problem !!! Thanks zak Your the best .

every dog I have ever owned has loved swimming. from sasha, German Shepherd, to mowii, collie cross, to nanuq alaskan malamute

I took my half-grown pup to a dog park, and because the other dogs were playing in the water, she followed them. However, there was a sudden drop off, and she started to drown. I am glad to say I was watching this, although from the far side of a fairly large pond. I had to quickly jump in and swim out to get her. Moral is, if you are more than a few feet from your dog, she needs a life vest until you are sure she can swim--dogs do not automatically know how to swim and dogs can drown!
