fun tidbit, birds can't step downwards, so they end up having to jump/fly (and depending what's on/behind the surface, they may be unwilling/unable to do it at all). step up was probably easier for your bird because it's a more natural motion. you can try doing "step down" with the surface right about chest level for the bird, and they should pick it up just as naturally as "step up"!

Makes me wonder if step on and off might be easier. Keep my arm level and associate it with being on me or not on me instead of the height. It might make come easier to learn too!

What seeds do you give them like sunflower seeds?
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can use sunflower seeds. Mine won’t eat them, so I use safflower seeds as treats. For food, they can eat such a large variety of seeds, nuts, and peas. Any bird seed mix with a good variety of small and large seeds will be fine for them. There are even specialized mixes for pigeons and doves that can be used.

@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! No, safflower seeds are medium sized white seeds while sunflower seeds are larger and pointier black seeds. If you see dehulled sunflower seeds, then they may look similar, but safflower seeds look that way with their shell casing still on.

@@BubblyPetz1 can we give pigeon sunflower seeds too? Or does it has to be safflower seeds? And can u tell me more about what we can feeds pigeons, like just have rescued a baby pigeon whom I was hand feeding for a 2 weeks or a month now so gathering info about pigeons right now , so I would love to hear what ever u know about pigeons, this is my first time with pigeon , I have had other pets, chickens, cats etc but never a pigeon thats why ...thanks a lot for answering me tho , I really appreciate it 😍
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
@@AbdulJabbar-vh6fh Yes, they can still be fed sunflower seeds. If your pigeon is fully grown and an adult, it should not have any issues eating them, although, if it’s still a little young, I’d hold off on the sunflower seeds since they are hard for babies to digest. Pigeons are granivores and can eat a wide variety of seeds, peas, lentils, rice, nuts, corn, and mung beans. Mostly, they should be fed more of the medium to larger sized seeds/grains than smaller seeds that you’d find in a finch/canary/parakeet mix. The easiest thing to do would be to buy a seed mix specially made for pigeons. The more variety, the better. You can take different bird seed mixes and even buy the separate grains to mix in to create your own feed too. Make sure you provide grit too for the bird. Things like limestone, oyster shells, red stone, etc. can be used. They make mixes with added minerals that are good. Pigeons need the grit to digest their food since they don’t remove the shells off their seeds.

I stumbled on this video looking for pigeon flying for my pigeon that i am giving a 2nd chance at life. My 1st priority was to raise it and let it fly free to find a group or a family. But i am getting somewhat attached, i bring him inside and walk around with it on my shoulders and show it the things i do. Lol... so i am leaning on keeping it and have it as a pet. Its a been about 2 weeks since i stoped hand feeding and introduced him some dove food cause my local pet shop said it be fine. But he doesnt seem to be eating much. So what kind of food do u feed cloud? 😊thx
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I feed my pigeon wild bird seeds mixed with a seed blend for doves. When you feed your pigeon, you should watch to see which seeds are its favorite and which ones it won’t touch. CloudFeather won’t eat corn, sunflower seeds, or peas. He won’t eat larger seeds and seems to have problems due to his beak whenever he even attempts it. He likes medium sized seeds and especially loves safflower. My other pigeon, InkWing, hates white millet and refuses to eat it, along with sunflower seeds and corn. He will, however, eat peas and seems to enjoy them.

I've taken care of pigeons since I was 12 and I'm 20. I've been able to train them as homing pigeons easily and breed them. I also take care of baby birds. Ever since I rescued my orange cat Jack when he was a kitten; for 3 years now I've not had birds bc he chased all of them off. Had an albino I rescued that almost got ran over by a city bus. Named her charcoal then she was a mother. She's one of the ones that flew off bc of my cat. Which is fair. Anyway I have two pigeons that a friend gave me just as they were becoming fledglings. I've decided to keep them and work with them in my screened porch. They're so stubborn. I've never clicked trained before just for the fact I've never had birds that liked to be on me. These guys don't like to be on me but they eat out of my hand which is a starter. The last pigeon I raised from 3 days old loved being on my shoulder but because of my cat I let him go. But I love working with pigeons and want to give it a shot again. I just don't know how to necessarily get these guys used to being on me more without wanting to fly off. Also they like peas but they don't always necessarily eat it out of my hand outside of their cage on the porch. But when they're inside they'll eat out of my hand like crazy. But I also live in Arizona and it's hot being out there too long. Though when it's in the low 100 that's nice. But it's been up there. I haven't even name my birds cuz I'm indecisive. Names have to be perfect for them. I'm super ranting here but that's fine lol I bought a clicker the other day I'm hoping with consistency I can work with these guys better. I have the advantage that they eat out of my hand and like peas. I just need to get them more used to being on me I just hate it when they poop on me lol. Any thoughts to my randomness?
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Wow, you’ve had a long history with birds! My pigeon never hung out on my shoulder or arm until I started clicker training him different commands that’d make him have to be on me like “step up”, “come”, and “shoulder”. After he got ahold of them, he’d always willingly try to be on my shoulder or stay on my arm because he had a good association from those actions.

I'm honestly thinking about getting a pigeon x3 but would you happen to know how well they can get along with a chicken?
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Honestly, I think it should be fine since you are getting three pigeons. They should mainly stick to themselves. If your chicken is a male, then I’d just make sure to supervise and see how they get along at first. If your chicken is female, then it’s not as likely to be aggressive. I’d also take your chicken’s personality into consideration.

Hey so I just rescued two domestic ring neck doves and I can’t get a handle on training them. They don’t understand that I can hold their food nor do they fully understand how to forage when out of their cages. I’m trying to do some basic target training or even just step up without forcing them to climb onto my finger with a nudge but I can’t do it without positive reinforcement like a treat 😭 one of them is too scared for me to even approach her so I let her just wander around my room but the other is fairly comfortable with me now and enjoys sitting on me. I want to start teaching tricks but, again, he just doesn’t understand that food can exist out of his food bowl (or when I’m holding his food bowl up to him). I’ve offered him a few varieties of food as well that Ik he likes from having devoured it in the food bowl. Any tips on how to just familiarize him with hand feeding???
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Oh, my… I don’t have experience with ringneck doves, but I’ve got diamond doves. I don’t think they have as large of a capacity to learn tricks like a pigeon would unfortunately. Ringnecks would be more similar to a pigeon than my diamonds and should be able to at least do some target training, step up, and recall. I would start by offering at least one of their meals only through hand feeding. You can measure the amount they’d eat for their first meal and put that in their food dish. When the time comes for them to eat again, and they ate everything in their bowl, offer the food only in your hand. Keep your hand still and make sure they can see the food inside your hand. If they are hungry, then they should eventually come over to your hand. It may take a few days before they are comfortable enough to eat from your hand. If they aren’t too scared of movement, you can try first placing the food in their bowl and shaking it so they can hear the sound and see the food. Then, when they come over you can have them watch you pour it into your hands to offer to them. It may take several tries like with the training. Just stay consistent, and they should eventually catch on, even if it takes several weeks.
@matts9371
@matts9371 Жыл бұрын
One thing about ringneck dove I learned is that they have poor spatial awareness. Years ago I caught a few to see what would happen if I set them loose in my apartment but they would just fly into everything while the pigeons I caught would immediately fly to a perch location without running into anything. I set them free after an hour of observation. No birds were harmed

My pigeon InkWing is like that. If I spend time with him everyday feeding him and giving treats, then he becomes tamer and more trusting. I haven’t been able to be consistent, though, so I end up gaining progress and then later losing it with him. I think ultimately it is dependent on the individual bird for how skittish they are, but if you consistently work with them, they are tameable.

How would someone train a pigeon to bring back money from the "wild"
@BubblyPetz1
@BubblyPetz1 Жыл бұрын
Haha, a question many would probably want to know the answer for! You could try training one you’ve built a bond with using your own cash and treats. Get them to learn to pick the bills up and then bring it to you for a reward. They’d have to learn to home too, so they don’t get lost, but even then, they probably won’t be very successful at money hunting. Predators, cars, people, and other pigeons will likely be too much of a distraction and a hinderance in their money seeking!

I spend time with him everyday and part of that time is when I do training, since I believe it’s very important for him to be able to recall and at least step up just in case of emergencies and for when I may need to handle him. Lately, I have been taking him outside and plan to do a video soon on that; however, I don’t take him far from our home due to birds of prey.
