@@whalewatchalaska What about a 6’ piece of rebar, sharpened at the bottom? For testing. For ice fishing: 3 hits in a spot should be sufficient. Need to check both sides of your path. Springs can always be present. Especially when some fishermen tell you “ there are no springs in the lake “. Ice fishing is a whole different ballgame than sitting in a boat in the summer. Tie a rope around you and to a tree on shore for first ice. Bowline knot around your chest. Or better yet, go out with an experienced ice fisherman. Btw: Perch, in the broiler pan, with some pepper and butter, are just about the best fish in the world, ice fishing, of course.
