So if my seal has gone can I change just that to stop it leaking without splitting the engine can I do that from the left side?

Yes it is possible. It's not an easy way to do it but it can be done with a drift tool or some kind of tool to hold the seal straight. The water pump cavity must be clean and grease the outside of the seal to help it slip in

No. Can all be done from the left/ Transmission side
