How to Tell If the Rock You Found Is a Meteorite
In this video, we discuss the characteristics of meteorites and how to distinguish them from common Earth rocks. Meteorites have a unique fusion crust, density, and regmaglypts and are magnetic and non-streaking. However, many Earthly rocks can mimic these traits, and meteorites are almost never round and do not have bubbles or holes. If you believe you've found a meteorite, it may be difficult to get a professional opinion. Consider sending a sample for testing to a reputable lab or just enjoy the fun of claiming you've found a meteorite.

Correction with the bubbles or holes: Meteorites CAN have holes or vesicles, but this is not of the same size of lava rocks. They are micro holes, visible to the eye, but no wider than a few hairs. It is usually found on the trailing side or backside of a meteorite. This isn’t too common on non-oriented meteorites, but it can happen. It’s usually a sign of stable flight.

Can I ask you a few questions ? I'm trying to figure out if a magnetic rock I found is a meteorite or something else. The rock in question at first glance looks like river rock. The type used in landscaping. It's about the size of my palm with the approximate volume of a racquetball. But it stuck out to me because of all the small voids. It holds a neodymium magnetic pretty strongly. The magnet jumps to it. The rock is dull gray though and doesn't appear to have any type of fusion crust left on it ( if it ever had any). I washed it, and while it's wet, there are a few visible "fracture" lines . I don't know what else to look for. Strongly magnetic, but lacks any noticeable fusion crust, and also being rounded makes me doubt that it's a meteorite. But hell, maybe it ended up in a river 1,000 years ago and now it looks like that. 🤷‍♂️ Any advice?

I recently sent a sample to New England meteor lab. But i am not satisfied with their findings. Though i sent a rock with a glassy surface and blue and yellow colors flashing inside they said it is not a meteorite but at the same time failing to answer why my rock surface is glassy and shining. They also failed to answer why different colors emitting inside the rock. They subjected my rock to magnet susceptibility test only and concluded it is not a meteorite. My rock attracts magnet but small chunk sent to that lab did not have iron content it seems. My rock when it fell it was a magmatic one and later it solidified into a bigger rock. Glass objects were also found alongside. No foundry no industrial process near my place. Then what it is? Many many objects picked and all are emitting colors like the parent rock which leads to the conclusion that all belong to the same family. So mysteries of nature should have to unlocked till the existence of universe.

Can i ask because all of those has pass. But one thing just really want to know. The streak test. When i scratch hard this stone it leaves faint gray. But in a little force its not leaves streak.
@trendingmailbox
@trendingmailbox 16 күн бұрын
Sure, the streak test is a useful method for identifying minerals. If a stone leaves a faint gray streak when scratched hard but doesn't leave a streak with little force, it might indicate a few possibilities: Hardness: The stone may be harder than the streak plate (usually porcelain). Harder minerals don't always leave a streak because they can scratch the plate instead. Composition: The faint gray streak could suggest the presence of certain minerals, like hematite or magnetite, which are iron oxides and often leave gray to black streaks. Surface Coating: The stone might have a surface coating or weathering layer that affects the streak test. Applying more force can penetrate this layer, revealing the true streak color. For accurate identification, consider combining the streak test with other methods like hardness, luster, and specific gravity tests.

Yeah, so did I. But it failed the toilet tank scratch test. Pull the lid off your toilet tank and scratch the rocks against the rough underside. If you can draw lines with it, then it's (most likely) not a meteorite .
