The phenomenon you described is called "spalling," basically where the bearings scrape against the race and slowly destroy themselves. The side to side swaying is not generally related to struts, i would advise looking at your trailing arm bushings

Next time I mess with it I'll check it out I ended up having the motor seize up on me so I'm debating if I want to rebuild it and drop it in or pull one from running wrecked one and drop it in
