This video will show case the three main signs that I know off, that indicate a bad or dying injection pump. This works for any diesel engine that has an injection pump, essentially. Perhaps unless it is ultra modern.
Show cased in this video is a 1990 Ford F-Superduty (F-450 before they called it that) with a naturally aspirated 7.3 idi International Harvester diesel engine.

You could also have a truck that starts and runs fine at first, but when hot will not restart. I have that on mine and have to pour water to shrink the hydraulic head and then it starts immediately.

I added deisel kleen to my tank and now my truck runs like this (when it runs). Before adding deisel kleen my truck ran amazing

Mine did the opposite ran like this before the diesel kleen put some in and let it sit and she doesn't even smoke at idle

I'm currently having some inj pump issues on my m35a2 but only seem to have the hard start issue. im hoping the leak is before the pump as there's pressure to it [i can hear the fuel sizzling out slowly after shutting it down,] but i would assume after the pump the leak would be much worse with the 40-80psi they say it runs. Won't know til it warms up again!

I do know that those lines have a tendency to leak. before and after the Injection pump. So defiantly check that first. Because it is all mechanical, if it has to re-pressure the lines every time that could cause hard starting. If there is no white smoke I don't think it is the injection pump. Also depends too if your cutting oil with fuel, or if your just running engine oil through it. Definitely check your fuel filters too. But also check the fuel density compensator its like a fuel looping , look up tactical repair on YT he does Deuce repairs.

That won't do anything for a worn pump as shown in the video. Waste of time and $ for the problems depicted here.

Mine has white smoke but it only does it on start up but does linger had a mechanic that familiar with these listen to the injectors all are working fine.he even checked the pump mines just very tired odo says 169k but i think it has more on it.

@@RIPFPSDOUG I mean there are some similar signs of a poorly running engine. But the rough running, and constant white smoke even when warm, is quintessential low combustion temp. Which is a fuel related issue. Weather it's injectors or the injection pump.

I have recently acquired a 1994 7.3 IDI that sat for a number of years. I recently got it running fixing some air intrusion issues. Now it starts up without too much fuss however it misfires and billows large clouds of white smoke. I drained all the old fuel and changed out filters prior to starting it. Once running it takes about 10 minutes for all the big white smoke to subside and the misfire to balance itself out. The truck then idles quite good and the throttle seems to be very responsive but it still has a light blue smoke even at operating temps. Where should i start with replacing parts. I've done return lines, treated the new fuel and additive and put some ATF in the fuel filter to help the pump originally when i got it running. My concern is the it only seems to billow the cloud of smoke at start up and then for 10 minutes after but not the whole time its running ! Should i be concerned about worn out rings or a bad cylinder ? The truck has 91,000 miles with original engine. Its a retired e350 ambulance that was fleet maintained. Any and all response messages and advice would be greatly appreciated !!!! TIA

That really does sound like an injection pump. Although because of difficulty to replace (if you haven't done it before) and price of parts, I wouldn't start with that. So perhaps check the fuel pump, weather its the old mechanical one or an electronic one. Improper fuel pressure could cause that. BUT it would cut out at higher RPM's, lets say about 2,500 and above, due to the lack of fuel. White smoke will never be cause by rings, that would only be blue. If you can, when it's warm really study the color of the smoke. "Oil burning" smoke is a slightly darker shade of smoke compared to "cold burning fuel" smoke. Which is more of a lighter blue at temp. It is the "white smoke" but because everything is nice and hot it will appear a very light blue. (diesel burns like oil does, it's just engine oil takes an immense amount of compression and heat to properly ignite so it never fully burns, hence the blue smoke, with improper injection pressure the diesel won't fully ignite causing a similar smoke effect.) One other way to test is to get a friend or a camera to look at the exhaust. When it is fully warmed up, and idling fine. Give it the beans up to about 3,000 RPM. Don't hold it there, just a quite acceleration. Possibly a couple times to really see what's happening. If it has descent throttle response, but there tons of white smoke. Then it is your injection pump.

All good points. Does the FIP have a thimble type filter on the feed to it?. A mate had similar symptoms of white smoke, rough running etc on his Nissan D21 with a VE pump. Once we cleared that filter it ran well. Either way....Put a Cummins🙌🏻 in it👍🏻😁

Ah yes I could see that if there was very limited flow to the Injection Pump then it could cause similar issues. Obviously I would rule out possible fuel issues first. but good input thank you!

That's why I avoid those boat anchor IDIs and only buy the 351w and 460 trucks.

Every engine has issues with age haha. An injection pump going out is akin to a carburetor going out. And some carburetors are harder to tune than injection pumps. It really is just a case of pick your poison.
