I'm an amiable type and although it can seem like amiables have some disadvantages in the working world, I can already see the natural advantages we have because it's very easy (at least for me) to sense what people need, what drives them, and how to match their communication style. I used to do it naturally, but I did it so much that I felt like a chameleon. Now I understand why I had 'different personalities' with different people.

So interesting! I am primarily an amiable with analytical tendencies. People are drawn to me and I am usually able to brighten their day, whether it's listening to their problems and reflecting their feelings, or making them laugh, etc....People often accuse me of being "too happy." But I am also incredibly curious about....everything! I want to know how everything works, cause and effect, why things work or don't work...I LOVE brainstorming! My Hubby is more a driver/analytical. He seems to have the best of each type, meaning, he doesn't care about trophies, and he isn't extremely wordy in his expression. Of course, he's a supervisor of a large number of people and he's really REALLY good at directing them efficiently.

Thank you for your affirming comment, Persephoney. The Platinum Rule is one of my favorites. It takes the Golden Rule a step farther. We have to remember that we are all different, with unique wants and needs. Sometimes what we want or the way we would do things is vastly different from what our partner, child, parent, customer or boss might want or the way they might do things. So if we're aware of how people want to be treated--how they want to be shown love and respect--why not treat them as THEY WANT and NEED to be treated. Pretty simple, huh? But much harder in practice. Dan

Is it possible to be an introverted Amiable? I prefer spending time alone but when I'm in social situations, I find myself adopting a cheery personality that sometimes surprises me. And being an empath I'm able to connect with people pretty well. But I still prefer to spend my time alone. Whenever I get a business call though I instantly become a Driver in a way that, after I get off the call, sometimes leaves me feeling like I could have adopted a softer approach. That Driver switch can be problematic when I'm working with someone who I also have a personal relationship with.
@TheWizardOfWords6 жыл бұрын
Hi Persia: You are describing my mother. She is an introvert, but you'd never know it. She'd prefer to be in the company of a select few, but when called upon to be in the company of many, she "appears" to be quite social. Introversion is largely about choice rather than circumstance. She is also a driver when it comes to business, but would prefer to delegate so that others do more interacting than she does. But when she does interact in a business situation, she is forceful. And yes, this "force" causes problems in her personal relationships. Having said all that, she is an introvert based on her inclinations and choices--just as you are. This is not being an introverted amiable. It is being an introvert who can rise to the occasion when called upon to do so. :) Dan

Funny, I work with a guy who is a blind driver...lol Because he likes 'accolades', he thinks they work with everyone. I see his 'tactics' as manipulative and cheap. It also doesn't work with me. I wish he would find your videos :) I was tested for style a couple of years ago. They determined I was amiable with a dash of driver...whatever that means. Years ago I would have called myself a driver but now, as a trainer, I've definitely become amiable, I think styles can change with age/experience. What do you think?
@TheWizardOfWords7 жыл бұрын
Hey Donna--in re your blind driver :) You're living proof that we should adjust our conversations and actions to fit the style of the person to whom we're speaking if at all possible--rather than foisting our style on them. It's easy to think everyone wants to be treated the way WE want to be treated. But of course the Platinum Rule is to treat everyone the way he/she wishes to be treated. That's a little tougher than the Golden Rule . . . . I agree with you about styles changing with age/experience. Not everyone would agree with you and me on this one--but I think that sometimes life can cause essential change in people--and that would be reflected in personality tests. I don't think it's common, but I certainly have seen people change over the years, and the change appears to be essential. Having said that, I DON'T think we can change other people, (and I'm sure you'd agree) yet the desire to do so seems to be one of the greatest relationship mistakes of all time. Just throwing a little parenthetical your way-- Dan

Great channel. When I was younger I worked my way through college by working at a customer service hotline of the debt department of a water company thats cutting people off of their water....I was the one you scream at for half an hour and I wasn't allowed to "not be customer friendly"...so you can't hang up the phone, can't scream back or be rude cause your bos listens in on your conversations....you just gotta take it...the job SUCKED but paid well. But you learn about these 4 types as well....and how to manipulate the hell out of them and best serve them. That job was soooo informative in life. I'm a pro in handling assholes now....without turning into a raging bitch myself.🖒😁 Threats and screaming slide right off. Learned some lovely assertive frazes as well. And number 1 lesson I learned is: if you start a debate emotional you have already lost it before you open your mouth. Its hard to get them to calm down to have a rational conversation and help them...most of the time their emotional level tends to spiral out of controle even more when you don't tell them what they want you to tell them.. untill they go completely nuts. Its a job where the worst people in life call and because they are on the phone they don't think you are human and they say stuff no sane person would ever say in life. If you can handle that you can handle anything. Hated the job but wouldn't have changed a thing. And you learn about yourself. Its funny, I myself am mostly an analytical type....accept the clothing....sure it needs to be functional but fashion has the function of making me happy which is important to. 😉😁But I'm the co-worker in every job...well my co-worker once said when someone didn't know something "ask her, either she knows it or knows where to find the info". 😂🤣 Embarrassing but yep true.. even worse I tend to have a dossier on it in my desk. I've researched that shit loooong ago. 😂🤣 Pick a topic any topic..got ya covered. Same goes for office supplies. So structure, efficiency, knowledge and being in controle of a situation is my jam. I like to learn. But weirdly enough I'm creative, social and want to help people in chaotic situations...so I deliberately put myself in a situation thats not orderly....so I can help them bring order with my knowledge. 😂🤣 Life is so much easier if you know who you are. You know what works for you and what REALLY doesn't. You know whats toxic as hell and who/what to stay away from. Its simple I don't have time/energy for toxic people or chaotic jobs that stay a mess. I'm more of a "lets help people in need. Lets get shit done people!" kinda woman. Why fight it...you are who you are...work it.

Effective Communication Skills With Dan O'Connor Thank you thats very nice. I have a feeling you'd be a better boss than my current one. Communication and social skills is so important. Unfortunately not everyone has those skills. And I've learned that humour (and if need be sarcasm or black humour) gets you far in dealing with those people as well. Learned the sarcasm thing during customer service...that job turned me into a snarky bitch😂....its still customer friendly so my boss had no complaints but I got to voice my frustration if need be and most customers didn't pick up on it (if you are doing it well). 😉😁 But the best thing by far are goofy nutty co-workers you can be wacky with during times of stress. Hilarious. I had singing co-workers that gave me flattering nicknames and made wacky noises all day long. Flirty hot co-workers work as well. Our team was like a trip to the nuthouse. 🤡🤣 But our productivity was the highest and hardly anyone got sick. Best job ever! 🖒😁 But unfortunately no matter how much you learn in life...life gives you new moments of growth. You'll be happy about them later but in the moment..not so much. Because of my customer service job I've been good with stress all my life...I'm freakin zen no matter what happens cause I've seen worse. But I got a new job and now I'm having burn out symptoms and I'm home sick....yeah that's the last thing I'd ever thought I'd say in life. Let me tell ya its an eye opener on so many levels. Shit is sooo gonna change from now on. Unfortunately I got a new job last year. Looking back on it the job itself, the organisation and my co-workers....well I hit the toxic trifecta...lucky me. I got stuck in an unorganized organisation, the job wanted me to screw over little old ladies going against the law and didn't teach me how to do my job to begin with (not even info on the client or this is how our computer system works...nothing)...no knowledge what so ever..no idea what to do or if I did it correctly cause they didn't check my work either. I wasn't even allowed to ask questions about what the hell I'm supposed to do cause my co-worker told me that that makes her think i'm annoying and an idiot (literally her response to a question about something even Einstein wouldn't know), my co-worker was a negative female version of Donald Trump that could suck the positivity out of a freakin rainbow if she wanted to. If you wished her a good weekend she would get mad at you and scream her to-do-list at ya. 😨😩 Or when you were talking she didn't have the social skills to communicate like a human instead she would scream untill you stopped talking so she could start to talk...mostly about how fantastic she is and how dumb others are. But I'm a "I can work with this" kinda woman so I stuck it out. So the organisation is crap...I can help fix it. So my co-worker is a mess, she is stressed and has personal issues maybe I can help her. I'll just be the office sun shine and I'll be patient with her...I did customer service I can deal with this. Yeah...no... Big mistake. Looking back from a personality types perspective that job was toxic for me on every damn level. And I felt it. I spoke my mind, made clear he can't expect the world of me without giving me the tools to actually do it...he kept pacifying and gaslighting me. When I noticed I was getting stressed I realised "he has broken all our agreements, this is not the job he said it would be, I'm getting stressed and its unhealthy, I don't deserve this and I'm damn well not tolerating it either". So I did something 9/10 employees don't do....I asked to speak to my new boss in private to tell him I was feeling stressed and to politely confront him in order to improve the situation and prevent future disasters. Yeah his response to my stress was to go raise the stress with threats, he felt put down so he tried to berate me. It wasn't a mistake either he was doing it on purpose and knowing I realised it he made clear he expected me to take it. It became clear it wasn't gonna change so I wanted to discuss it with my family and quite my job on Monday....fuck it, I deserve better, I'm out. Yeah that Friday I was at my doctor...congratulations burn out symptoms and I had to call in sick. My boss got mad and they started sending me threats by email hoping I'd quite my job so he wouldn't have to pay me...cause thats what you do when someone is stressed stress them out even more going against every law and common decency. So now I'm analysing it like a good little analytical personality type....😂🤣 the situation hit all the criteria of what NOT to do to someone who is analytical. Toxic AF! Funny thing is. Looking back there was nothing I could/should have done differently. I realised someone was trying to use me, I stood my ground, voiced and held my boundaries, confronted it head on when need be and was ready to remove myself from a toxic place when needed.....just 1 day too late...bad luck. So from a communication and social point of view it wasn't a learning experience. But when I just heard you sum up what the analytical person likes/needs....it hit me how toxic it was for me to begin with. When I'm ready to work again I'll be more preventative.... I need an organised company that wants to teach me things and social co-workers and a boss who you can trust to keep his word. I will not tolerate anything less cause its toxic for me. I can handle it sure...like you can handle screaming debt customers...just cause you CAN handle it doesn't mean you SHOULD. So now the woman that likes to be in controle has to let everything in life go for a couple of months...and I'm not even in control of my emotions half of the time. Thank God I have a sense of humour and see the irony in this cause otherwise its not funny. But definately a new experience. Only when you are it you can see it in others. I'm looking back on old anti-social and bitchy co-workers and realise she wasn't a bitch but she was having a burn out....too much noise for her to handle and she felt threatened that was all. Thats a skill that will come in handy in the future. That and don't be pushy or demanding or surprise someone thats stressed cause it will feel threatening to them and they go into a fight or flight responce...they will be bitchy or try to leave.... they can't help it its an automatic response that bypasses the rational part of the brain....they are stressed and are functioning on autopilot. This experience made me change my own approach to how I will deal with my "bitchy" clients in the future. So everything happens for a reason I guess. Or I try to find the light in every darkness. I was already skilled in handeling stressed out people or assholes...but now I might actually be able to handle them better in a more pleasant way for my customer....I might actually help them not just do my job and help a company .... but first sick leave. 🤕 😁

Wow. You must have never actually listened to a Trump speech. The only time I’ve ever seen him go on the offense is when somebody else initiated it. Any other time when treated with the proper respect, he seems quite friendly and willing to explain himself. Big difference in DJT being an ahole and media claiming he is an ahole. Next time try to listen to him and pay attention to if the other person is starting with antagonism. Guarantee if you’re honest you’ll see it.

I'm sure she will tell our boss all the mistakes I made. The bosses are on vacation for two weeks. We teach the customers how to put jewelry together. I like to explain to the customer the reader's digest version. She likes to explain in so many details about the process. Along with telling them about her achievements in life. I totally frustrate her because of my simplistic style. This makes me feel very tense and tired by the end of the day. She can be very rude to me and I have to take it. I say I have to take it because she is liked by our bosses more. I went to them for help before and he made it about her being persecuted cause she is gay, like his daughter. Explaining that's the way she is that way. Confused me totally my religious views and her lifestyle do not come up in any of our conversations. I'm not sure why he made it out to be that. One day I had enough of her picking at me so I said so and walked out. I had already clocked out. We ended up having to meet with the bosses. They counseled us like two married people. The bosses are married and the store owners. I enjoyed your explanation of types of personality. I really want to get along with her. At the same time I want to find a new job to save my sanity. Do you think learning about her personality type will still help?

Please could you help out by these real preoccupations about your video? What does an analytic person do to take care of the relationship as you are suggesting?

Should he start to babble with the expressive? This could be suicidal. Would the expressive respect his quiet time when he needs any ?

Hmmmm....I identify with the analytical type. I also have Aspergers. Analyticals and autists seem to share many traits. Also, your jingles are annoying. Sorry, just being honest

I enjoy your channel. But I think it's very limiting, and a big mistake to catagorize people into 4 boxes. I see how you could use it as a shortcut, but this is not representative of the unique complexity of each person. We are multidimensional beings, not catagories, or numerology numbers, or astrology signs. These constructs can be just as misleading and invalidating as they are helpful. Part of the fragmented paradigm our society exists in.

I hear you. Knowing the 4 personality types can be helpful, but they are not absolute. What do you think of the Enneagram? Whereas I take your point in re the 4 personality types--I don't think the critique applies to the Enneagram.
