Slack adjusters need to be replace when there’s more than 2” of play. You can get em checked by doing a brake adjustment

It's pretty obvious when they need replacement, they will ether have a ton of slop (more than shims can account for) idk what the other guy means by 2 inches of play, nothing on a slack adjuster moves that damn much.

Word of the wise if u have a crack on brake shoes make sure u go ahead and replace the drums as well. Don’t cheap out bc I’ve seen a brake drum explode into pieces

True, I wish I had a dollar for every brake shoe I’ve replaced in 35 years of diesel work.

Had a fuel train come in, with a week old set of brakes from the Toronto shop. Came into our little Corunna shop, for a safety, come to find the shoes are glazed and drums heat scored and fucked. Cam was so sloppy it was like pulling a lever up and down to activate a machine. Tube bushings were shot. This is why you check those while the shoes are off. A waste of brand new brakes.

I follow Drivers down steep grades all the time most drivers don’t know how to use there jakes most grades never hit my breaks and I watch these rookies ride there breaks on and off of them down the grade and just laugh when I see smoke puffs coming off of them people need to learn to use all the tools on a truck and stay off the breaks lmao Rookies
