I had these issues with my 940 93' Volvo, it stopped going a few times, fuel pumps changed... it worked well for a couple of days, then the same thing. Next move = Changed pump relay for a new one ... No problems. Did some research about the relays of Volvo 700/ 900 series, it's a common issue. Yes, a new little relay ( 27 eur in Finland ) makes surprisingly lot good when you have an issues as you presented on this video. Greetz and all best !

A simplier way to test the main fuel pump is remove fuelpump relay, carefully pry off the casing of the relay, reinstall relay on its place on the board, manually aktivate the switches and hear if the pump does work. It saves a lot of time :) You can also with the relay removed, connect between the connections on the board with a small cable that is stripped of its insulation a bit. check the wiring diagram for the right connections. An other way to check if the Main fuel pump it`s in proper working order, start the car, run it 10 to 20 minutes, let i idle, get out or the car (don`t forget the handbrake) if you clearly can hear the pump working in about 2 to 4 meters distance from the car on the driver side, you need to replace it. Especially if you can hear a "ratling" noise/sound from the pump. Or connect a volt meter to the leads on the Main fuel pump, and start the engine, if the voltage is 11 volt, or below, the pump shoud be replaced.

I have an 88 760. I have not been able to locate the led code tool yet. I have fuel, and I hear the pump under the driver seat. New rotor and cap. Today I am going to go ahead and get new wires and plugs. I swapped the coil with a known working one.

How is the pump working if the fuse is blown? I would disconnect the pump and see if the fuse still blows. If it does, there is probably a damaged wire somewhere.

Rene Jacques If the in tank, primer pump is out, the car can still run and drive fine when there is more than 1/4 tank of gas in the car.

If the main pump is out, the car will NOT run. You can listen for the tank pump, both actually. Is the relay good?

I replaced the fuel pump relay and main fuel pump. I sprayed the throttle body, and after much revving the engine up it does crank up but runs no more than 2 mph and responds very poorly when pressing the gas pedal. Any advice? Should I rev up the engine some more? ( I had to stop coz a neighbor was complaining).

I have a 1991 Volvo 740 and I can’t figure out the problem with it. It accelerates a lot slower than it should and doesn’t go more than 80mph it’s a non turbo model so it should top off at 140 and it takes me more than a quarter mile to get up to 60. Was told it could be my shift solenoid possible my fuel pump but I don’t wanna keep spending money replacing the wrong parts tryna figure it out any tips?

Also it has a late shift and will over ride each gear unless I let go of the gas n go back on it to shift it myself at around 3500rpm

Hey! Cant hear my fuel pump in my tank or anyt sound from it. Tokk off the fuel pipe before the rail, and when i turn on the igniton nothing comes but when i try starting the car, the fuel comes out of the pipe! So why wont it start when im trying and it has fuel and ignition? but still i just think its the high pressure pump pumping. Any tips? Btw great and usefull video!

I am a motor mechanic on marine motors so i know how to diagnose and so :) i just wanna know if you have been in same situation with some of your cars. So the fuel only come through the pipes when i crank... but shoulndt it start with tht fuel? I have all the other requierments for the engine need. But with only turning the ignition key on, not a singel drop of fuel comes! Most likely broken feedpump?

Hey Robert, I just bought a 98' 940 b230Fk, and when I turn the key to position 1 I can hear a pump working on the drivers side rear wheel. i know this is normal for about 2-3 seconds but the thing is that the pump keeps doing that noise constantly whether or not the engine is running, should I be worried about the main pump or about the in-tank pre-pump are about to die on me? Car runs fine, it seems to have a bit more oil leaks that I would like, so gotta check the pcv. Also trying to troubleshoot the issue with idle being a little bit inconsistent around 700 rpm even when cold. Keep up the good work and thank's

Bingo. The relay is there, don't know if working, but the fuse number 11 for the fuel pump is jumped through another fuse to the 12 volt cigarette lighter terminal. I will try to find a relay and fix it asap. In the mean time, I guess it can only hurt if the pump is running and the engine is not running right?

The relay shuts the pump off in the event that the car crashes, ruptures a fuel line, and stalls. It will shut off the pump so fuel doesn't keep spraying around.

+Joe Serrano sure you could turn the car on and listen inside the tank to hear if the pump is running. You could also disconnect the fuel line in front of the main pump turn the car on and see if there's a little fuel pressure coming out of the line.
