Thank you so much!! I did what you suggested and adjusted the tension knob from 0, to 4, then 9 and lightly tugged my thread each time and there was no tension. My machine is newer so I can't see the tension components, but I did run a pipe cleaner down the slim opening and that seemed to help. Hopefully it will stay this way long enough to finish up my Christmas gifts and then I'm going to take it in for a cleaning.

Thank you so much for explaining how/why the tension works the way it does. I am one of those sewers like you mentioned, that pulled the bobbin casing apart, gave it a good clean on the underside of machine, only to still have the problem. I was worried about how far to turn the upper tension when quilting, only going as far as 6.5, but you have given me the confidence to go higher now. Thank you, you would make a great teacher, the way you explain things so easily for me to understand

Omg thank you so much! I had thread that was loose on the top for ages and tried EVERYTHING the internet said but no where did it say clean out the tension mechanism. Found a giant tangled red thread (haven't used red since February) in there. Cleaned it out with a tool that came with it and all my stitches are perfect now! I have messed up and cost myself a lot of money on customers shirts and this has saved me so much aggravation! Thank you so much!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Hello. I live near Morehead, Kentucky. Brenda sent me. I own a Bernina Patchwork Edition that I bought new from the Bernina dealer here. It's going to take me a while to get through all your available videos. I I need to learn how to deep clean and oil my Bernina. I don't use my Bernina very often. I save it for doing special projects. My Bernina hasn't been serviced for a while. I was told that I am never to open my machine to clean and oil it myself (by the repairman at the dealership). However, another woman told me that she does open, clean and oil hers. Because I have been told different stories by the people that I bought my machine from, I now do not trust them anymore. This last time I was in their shop (for a class) the repairman wanted me to trade in my machine. I like my little Bernina. I don't want one of those big machines they were selling at the time. I can't lift them. I'm 75 years old. The repairman did not know that I had overheard a woman telling her husband that she wanted a little Bernina like mine. I also overheard the husband ask the repairman about getting them a machine like mine. The repairman told him that they were not made anymore. Someone else told me that the computer inside my machine is now out of date and cannot be replaced. If any of the information that has been given to me is correct, I may never buy a modern sewing machine again. I do most of my sewing on antique Singers. The old machines are easy to open, clean, and oil. I would love to be able to do the same for my Bernina.
@berninajeff Жыл бұрын
I like old mechanical machines too, but the features a computerized one has are nice. Clean and open what you are comfortable with do not adjust things and use a good oil. Computer machines are good for as long as they work like a cell phone if they die get a new one. Jeff

Thanks for the video explaining tension. I've got a Bernina 330 and have a question about removing the thread. Should I cut the thread near the spool and pull the thread out going forward, or could I just take the spool and pull the thread backward through the machine? Thanks for your videos!

Absolutely wonderful information as usual, thank you Jeff. Can you help with my very recent problem, I have a Bernina 590 that has just started to shred the upper thread, I use 50wt Aurifil for piecing with 1.5 stitch length. I sew fairly slowly but still shreds, have tried using Bernina thread stand, have undone everything & checked what I can, also lowered thread tension from 70 to 40, new needle, no luck. Seems to shred & break down lower end opposite presser foot left button etc. Any ideas would be such a great help 😀🤞

Hi there. Thank you kindly for your reply. I've done exactly what you said to do and it still sews straight stitch to the left, but I have found it to work straight stitch when the lever for ornamental and zigzag stitch is positioned in the middle. This is the only way it will sew a central straight stitch. I've managed to get the whole machine up and running I've cleaned, oiled, and done a test of all stitches. It's a beautiful runner. Tested on 6 layers of denim Jean material, 6 layers of thick calaco, 12 layers cotton, polyester 2oz wadding in between cotton and even a bit of freemotion. It goes through it all. If I'm using the machine in the incorrect way ie set up different from the normal will this cause damage in anyway? The only other thing I can think is that it is out of alignment? Thank you once again. Kind regards Debbie

Hi there. Thank you for the great videos you provide. I would be grateful if you could please help me out with a query regarding a 730 bernina record. I can't seem to get the straight stitch to centre itself. I was thinking if it was an off set stitch to the left. If I move the knob to centre it for straight stitch it will do zigzag. I've checked manual set it up as directed but zigzag will always occur. Any advice would be much appreciated. Kind regards Debbie

Hi Jeff, so glad I found your channel. I am going back to sewing on my Bernina 950 and I have always had an issue since I got this machine where the backstitch always gobbles up the tread. I think it is the speed of the machine. I just cleaned my upper tension like you showed and am still getting the breaking of the tread once I do a couple of backstitches and then go forward again. Do I have to unscrew that area under the plate to release something or clean it? I did take a dust blaster to it to try to clean the lint out. Appreciate your advice.🙏🏻

which Brother do you have? some have a button on the side of machine that you can push in to drop feed dogs. Then push it again to put the feed dogs back up.
@silverpromidi2 жыл бұрын
hey Dawn, mine is the Star 110 it has the control switch to the right and below the bobbin cover but on the body of the machine. Does that make sense? I'm going to give a call to a machine service guy and find out what the costs will be. I saw an amazing plate that goes over the top of the existing plate to cover the feed dogs and you can then free motion sew 😮 I thought that was a pretty cool idea and a possible option 😀

I have a Bernina B350 patchwork addition. Have had it for many years. I am not sure what the problem is, but when I sew, the bobbin thread looks great and upper thread I could pull it right out of the seam I sewed. I have tried everything I can think of, cleaned it, re-threaded it, changed the needle, changed the bobbin, changed the thread and changed the upper tension dial from o to 10, and nothing works. just hate the thoughts of having to take it in. The nearest sewing machine repair is 30 minute drive and over 2 weeks or more to wait for it and with the price of gas right now. I am stuck.
