What a gorgeous car. No modern car will ever touch the simple elegance of old school dashboards from the '40s and '50s.

My first car was a bare bones 1957 Plymouth with standard steering and 3 on a tree. It was an old car and the gears would jam, and I learned how to crawl under the engine and untangle the linkage. Memories! But maybe the jamming up is why standards are made differently now.

In 1961, Ford offered an optional four-on-the-tree manual shifting arrangement. Gear shifter was on the steering column, same as three-on-the-tree. For reverse, the driver would have to pull a handle under the dashboard then move the shifter in to a special position(I'm not sure what that was). Ford dropped that option shortly after it was introduced.
@johndrake2729 Жыл бұрын
Ah, never knew that. Probably to lock out reverse so you wouldn't shift into it by accident.

I got to drive a 3 on the tree a couple times. It’s interesting the 1st time, the 2nd time, I was proud that I could get right in and go, by the 3rd time, it was already becoming a chore. Floor shifters for manual transmissions is much better, but I liked the shifter on the column for automatics. The last automatic with a column shifter I owned was a 2004 impala.

The first one I drove was on a pickup truck. I got a fun summer job at a garage doing oil changes, picking up and delivering parts etc. My boss said if I wanted the job I had to learn how to drive a standard ( that’s what they called manual transmission back then) or he’d find someone else. My lesson was, here’s first, second, third, reverse, and don’t ride the clutch.

When I first learned how to drive I learned on my dad's automatic so I got kind of used to using it then when I got my first car it was a 3 on the tree like this and I didn't know it was until my dad bought the car for me and it was confusing since I was so used to using automatic then after I used it for a while I learned to actually love it but recently I bought another used car since my first car had too many problems and it's an automatic and I hate it. It feels like going from using training wheels to riding a bike and going back to using training wheels again because of how overly easy it feels to what I grew used to.

Basically it's the same except the linkage likes to jam and R is where 1st would normally be. Oh, and no synchro in first so if you want to shift down to it you have to double clutch. Generally only used when starting from a complete stop.

My dad had a car with column shift for a short time. He bought it on payday when he was drunk. I don't remember what kind it was, I only remember it was a big fugly green car and my mom hated that thing. When she drove that car it was the only time I ever heard her curse. Especially when she was trying to get it into a parking spot at Monkey Ward. I drove it on the farm, I hated that thing with a passion. We didn't have it very long.

My great great aunt had a 1953 Ford that shifted three on the tree. It had no power steering and manual everything. When she turned 90, he grandson bought her a new car without asking her. They went for a drive and she hated it. The next time he visited her he found the car with a for sale sign on it in her yard and she continued to drive her '53 for the rest of her driving years. Sadly, he got the '53 and doesn't respect it.

Yea general rule of thumb for anyone driving a classic for the first time: in my experience if it’s pre 1975-ish, NEVER downshift from 2nd to 1st unless you’re stopped or at most like 5 mph cause it’ll grind 🥴😫😂
@fordtruxdad51553 жыл бұрын
It's no problem to downshift from 2 to 1. You just have to double-clutch.

i'm not a car guy, didn't learn to drive until i was 25 and still think cars and driving are way over rated. but i love the stories of teens who fail to steal a car because they can't drive stick. 3/21/20 is the first time i heard of a column shifter so i looked it up. to be clear, what he's shifting near (on?) the wheel does what other shifters do, where drivers use their right hand? do you still have to use your left foot on another pedal next to the brake when you switch gears? this is weird. were cars like this until a certain time and then the shifter was relocated?
