I've been unapologetically binging on your videos this week (huz'b works evenings). And I'm lusting after your talent. I was a commercial artist in several fields of art all my life...practically. And I always considered pottery my "hobby". But now I have inherited a kiln, and a slab-roller, and a wheel. So, on with this next chapter, huh? There is something about the perfect belly of a coffee mug in your paws that is so comforting, right? Yours looks amazing! I am gathering up the motivation to delve into mugs. Might try slab first, but the wheel is def in my future. Thank you so much for all of the inspiration and instruction you give to us. Big hugs, cat

Sarah, I just wanted to drop a few words of gratitude for your very informative videos. I am a PMC Artist that has recently decided to try out my skills on what l like to call the 'bigger clay'.😜 I am slowly getting to know this new form of clay, and having fun getting to know this new medium. A lot of the tools I already have in my studio are transferable to this bigger clay but there are a number of other tools you have mentioned and so kindly provided links for that I appreciate. Your links have made it so much easier for me to do my research. Glazing is a total grey area for me so all your videos on this topic, the demonstrations on applications, examples of combinations, including the fails have been a huge bank of information. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am a fellow Canadian so your recommended sources is very helpful for me as well. (I live in the beautiful Fraser Valley of British Columbia -- Langley, BC - a suburb of Vancouver). PS. Your work and color combinations are absolutely lovely. My favorites are the Lusterous Jade under Dark Green with the Blue Rutile (Previous video) and the Red Wine with Autumn Purple; Purple Glaze etc. In your words, "Gorggggg!" For me they were "Awesome Sauce"!

I never order glazes or clay during the winter! The trucks and planes are not heated and the areas the companies keep things while they are being shipped aren’t likely heated as well. Thanks for an informative video Sarah. I am going to have to get my hand held extruder out of storage - I think it is the same one as yours. I remember having a lot of trouble with bubble blow outs and lines across the extruded pieces that would crack right across. Practice I guess.
@SarahWaltonPottery10 ай бұрын
Hi Jane! I make sooo many things with my extruder, and yes the blow outs are a pain, try plugging them like i did..it works and I don't have defects... make sure that the clay doesn't lay on the table while you are extruding as that seems to give the lines, having it hang (tho a workout) really helps prevent that issue..the blowouts not so much, that's why i do it over the table so that if it falls i won't fall on the floor...et me know if you have any success 🥰

Sarah with the gun you roll your clay to fit the gun cylinder and roll the clay cylinder in the food film cling Wrap leave about a finger or 2 finger on the front of the clay cylinder with no cling wrap , on the back of the lay cylinder you just have twist the film to close, slide the cylinder on the barrel gun and and finish assembly your gun extruder and extrude you handles. When you finish just open the front of the gun and take the clay out , basic you don’t have to clean the gun and also you don’t have to take apart the gun, just the front os the gun, you don’t have to clean anything, works for wall extruder. I hope I make sense, English is not my first language. If you don’t get it let me know I can always get my daughter to write😜🤗

Your clay is so soft looking !!! I think my clay is too old now :( I will have to deal with that😅
@SarahWaltonPottery10 ай бұрын
Oh yes its so nice to throw with! You can soften up your clay tho...I do it all the time with some older boxes. Get a large bucket that is deeper then a bag of your clay. add a half cup of water into the bag, make sure it runs down all sides, and seal it up. then fill the bucket with water to cover the top of the clay in the bag, this will act like a vacuum and push the water tight to the bag, leave it overnight and it should be nice to throw with again.

Wow best beginner vid I’ve seen! Thankyou for the shout out too hunni xx could u pls explain yr mug drying process to avoid handle cracking? Do u slow dry? Thanks!
@SarahWaltonPottery10 ай бұрын
Hi Nat! THANK YOU!! it means so much to me that you enjoyed it!! I dry all my pots SLLLLLOOOOWWWLY. When I first attach my handles I will cover them with a plastic sheet or shower caps (I get them at the dollar store and they are great for covering up your pots) for a couple of days so that they are in there own little atmosphere and the components really marry. This works for me. If the pot is on the dryer side I will mist my pot the first day so that the whole pot is moist but not wet. I carefully lean my mugs on their handles with corks to prop them and that keeps them really snug while they dry. Hope that makes sense🤪 Cheers!!🥰

Hi sarah!! When you go to glaze those mugs, how do you keep the glaze from covering up the underglaze?
@SarahWaltonPottery3 ай бұрын
Hi Allie! Thanks for your question!! I will use a clear glaze over the little appliqué and then brush on the colour glaze on the body. If I were using a dipping glaze I would apply the clear then add wax resist over the appliqué. Then dip the pot. I would then be able to wipe away any glaze that stuck to the wax without messing up the lettering. I hope this makes sense🤭🥰

I usually don't have an issue as I'm home so the box isn't left outside on my porch...stores usually send it by a carrier that keeps things from freezing..however this time I suspect something went wrong with the one supplier because my glazes felt like they may have froze... I plan on marking the caps so I can track to see if i have issues.

Where did you get the unique sponge that sits between your throwing water & splash pan? I have a Shimpo RK Whisper pottery wheel. Do you know if there is a round splash guard? Better still, do you know of a DIY way of making a splash guard that is completely round? I’d really like to find a table (or cut the legs down short enough) that would allow me to keep a ‘water throwing bucket’ AND a separate bucket that would allow me to scrap all the slip and/or other clay that is on my hands as I’m centering, wet trimming, and/or when a piece collapse. Having two buckets at or similarly close would keep my clean-water bucket significantly cleaner,, not to mention it’d be a bit easier to re-wedge clay scraps that can be thrown during the same session, for lack of a better word, or at the very least have it prepared for a future time. At present, I am unable to stretch my legs while throwing because there simply isn’t room. I wish I was able to send a picture as it would make better sense. I’m sharing a metal shed that is sold to keep a riding lawnmower, weed eater, edger, yard sweeper, & other implements of destruction. I don’t have a kiln. I don’t even have access to one. There isn’t room for me to put on3 in here.
@SarahWaltonPottery2 ай бұрын
Hi Sammi! The sponge that I have between my water and splash pan is a large wall paper sponge...if you mean the one that is double ended on the stick...I made it myself, folding a sponge and using string and waterproof glue...I've had it for YEARS and it's still going strong. With regards to the splash guard, I use two plastic placemats clamped to my splash pan when I use my giffingrip to keep the trimming bits from flying all ver the floor. there is a trimming guard that you can by from most pottery supplies that may also be helpful. google potter supply near me and you will find a few stores. I use the big plastic bucket beside my wheel for all the excess slip, I probably wouldn't cut a hole in my table, but if your handy maybe build a table that sits in front of your wheel over the bench, and design all the details that work for you...just an idea. If I didn't answer your questions right, let me know...cheers! xo

Honestly Tonie, I don't know the grams..it's a strange thing in Canada, a lot of us use a combination of metric and imperial systems. I understand heights, weights etc in pounds, feet and inches. Yet speed and distance I use kilometres...I will try and remember to look it up when I speak to weights etc, but I can't promise that will always remember 😬 I did a quick google search and 1½ pounds = 680.39g.
