Video Series on technique for learning how to quickly master throwing pottery and how to be a successful production, small batch potter.
In a short series of videos I will teach you how to quickly get the clay up off the wheel head. This program teaches you how to quickly get uniform and consistent clay cylinders; the first step in throwing any piece of pottery.
In future videos we will use this technique to clarify all the different steps of making a successful design including applying handles, designing to package and shipping. and what makes an enjoyable and usable piece of production pottery. So if you are wanting to finally improve your throwing or you are wondering what it takes to become a small batch or production potter this series of videos is for you.
If you are struggling lets meet up on Instagram. Follow and send me a DM and we can schedule a video chat on Instagram. I can watch what you are doing on the video link and give some helpful pointers.

This might just be the ticket for you. The trick starts with having a consistent ball weight. And then being able to throw that clay to the same spot each time. Good luck! If you decide to try this you can follow me on instagram. The if you want DM me; we could do a video chat. I can watch what you are doing if you point the phone at the wheel head and offer timely and thoughtful suggestions. I rarely yell or curse.

Just started with my new wheel. Arrived and unpacked on Sunday. Have thrown 4 or 5 pots daily, so a few to do before I get to 100! 😂

What wheel did you buy? Do you have any interest in trying to throw while standing up?

I have a Shimpo RK5T it's a table top wheel with a foot pedal. Standing to throw as I don't have much room in the kitchen! Lol trying to set up as you suggest, water with sponges and rib in etc. Slowly getting to grips with it. 😀

Very good instruction, easy to follow. In my 40 years of clay work I’ve never used a pointer and I no loner do studio production it this is a cool tool! I will share this with my students.

Im with you. I only do enough production these days to keep the skill. But the pointer is a bang up device for beginners. Check out the build in this vid. Easy peasy with a glue gun.

The steps are nicely broken down. I don’t think often about adding a thrown foot but will be now!
@itsclearasmud7718
@itsclearasmud7718 2 жыл бұрын
Throwing a foot can be a many splendor thing. As an example that bowl could have had a 4 inch high thrown foot turning it into a chalice. Or I could have thrown the foot separately and applied it to the bottom of the bowl and re thrown it a bit; turning it into a goblet. If you visit my Instagram ( same name," Its Clear As Mud") I have a picture of a green and bronze pine vase, where the fluted top and the foot were both applied this way, making for a very large vase from three parts. Its a fun thing to play with. Good luck.

@@itsclearasmud7718 Thank you for the inspiration. The clay I’m using right now (StarWorks New Seagrove) requires little water to throw, so it is a good candidate for throwing a foot without compromising the underlying bowl. At least I think so. I’ll try it and see.

And that pine vase is exquisite. Is the pine section from stamps and sprigs?
@itsclearasmud7718
@itsclearasmud7718 2 жыл бұрын
@@suebaldwin-way5327 Yes. I am a sprigging fool. Those sprig stamps were made by sticking pine cones into wet clay, forming a handle and firing the whole thing in a bisque. Then sanding the rough edge flat on a table top. I've also cast them in Hydro stone which is harder and more durable than plaster. I hope in the future to do a bunch of videos on press molds and sprigging. I got stuck in pine for about 5 years and never fully recovered. My next vid is on making a chop stamp to sign your work.
